2017 Excellence in Construction Awards 1

LETTER FROM THE 2017 CFC ABC CHAIRMAN

Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. was founded in 1950 by a group of seven contractors in Baltimore on the basis that together they were fundamentally stronger, together they believed that free enterprise and open competition was the best delivery method for construction owners, and together, union and merit employers must be able to work side-by-side to build post-war America. In contrast with a then-predominant union-only delivery method, ABC’s model was called “Merit Shop” by ABC’s first staff officer, John Trimmer. The intervening years have clearly demonstrated how right they were, and today, all of the projects constructed in Florida are built merit shop, which includes union and nonunion employees working on the same project to deliver value to the owner. ABC has many things to celebrate this year. ABC is engaged in the political process, interviewing candidates and reviewing issues relevant to the commercial construction industry. In the 2016 elections, ABC PAC endorsed 26 candidates and 2 constitutional or county issues, winning in 23 races and one issue. 2018 will be another big election year in Florida with races for a new governor and all of the cabinet officers, as well as many legislative and county races. ABC will again be engaged. ABC of Florida was able to claim two victories in Tallahassee this year, with the passage of the Statute of Repose clarification and a limitation on local government mandates on state funded projects. Workers compensation reform will again be on the list for 2018. Central Florida Chapter ABC events are where contacts are made, and thousands of attendees have been at ABC events this year, including the Chili Cook-off, BBQ Competition, three Golf Tournaments and the Construction Expo. Recognition of outstanding safety records is the result of the STEP Safety

Awards program. Again this year we are pleased to provide a continuing commitment to enhance and grow pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship training. CFC ABC also offers continuing education courses for state licensed contractors, and for administrative and professional staff. The Leadership ABC program exposes emerging leaders in the industry to new ideas and best practices. Publications like Building Central Florida magazine, the annual Membership Directory, and this magazine help to connect the community of common interest in which we all live and work. As a means to demonstrate the quality of workmanship and vital services CFC ABC members provide to the entire community, CFC ABC developed the first Excellence in Construction Awards program in 1988. In the intervening years, these awards have recognized thousands of big and little construction projects which are exemplary in all aspects: quality construction, innovative techniques and materials, degree of difficulty, and worker safety. The difficult job of judging the EIC submissions has been accomplished through the much appreciated efforts of the Excellence in Construction Awards Committee and independent judges who dedicate hundreds of hours walking the projects and reviewing entries. The program would not be possible without those contributions, the generous sponsors and advertisers, volunteer drivers, and the CFC ABC staff. Together these projects reflect the millions of man-hours delivering these projects safely, ethically and profitably for the betterment of the greater Central Florida community. Thanks to all who made the 2017 Excellence in Construction program a reality and hearty congratulations to all of the winners listed in this magazine.

2017 Excellence in Construction Awards8

Each year, the Central Florida Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (CFC ABC) recognizes and celebrates outstanding projects built by CFC ABC members. The awards competition serves to raise the level of construction standards throughout the industry by recognizing the workmanship of those who contribute and by showcasing the results of their commitment.

The Excellence in Construction Awards program accepts project entries from general contractors and specialty contractors. Typically, general contractors will enter the entire construction project, which may consist of a single building, or multiple buildings, such as a resort, an interior build-out, or a renovation of an existing building. Specialty contractors enter in their specific trade, from site work to finishes, electrical, mechanical and specialty construction areas.

Each project entry is evaluated by selected judges represented by a cross-section of the industry, including local design professionals who either visit and tour each project or determine the score based on a presentation and awards entry book. The names of participating judges are listed on page six in this publication.

The project entries are judged on execution of design, quality of craftsmanship, attention to detail, proper installation, outstanding planning and coordination efforts, challenges successfully overcome, project complexity, custom materials, safety program, and owner satisfaction.

This premier Central Florida construction industry competition, established in 1988, and now in its 30th year, honors the most prestigious construction projects in Central Florida. A total of 114 projects were selected to receive the Eagle Award, the Chapter’s highest recognition. Central Florida ABC honored the Eagle winners at its Annual Awards Presentation Banquet held at the Hyatt Regency Orlando on October 7, 2017.

Altis at Sand Lake, OrlandoCherrylakeLuis PerezEagle AwardLandscape, Multifamily, $500,000-$1 M

At the Altis at Sand Lake apartment complex, Cherrylake created an im-mersive retreat in the heart of the city noise, tourist traffic and concrete sprawl. The benefits of being close to the downtown Orlando area pose a challenge of managing sightlines to minimize the impact of eyesores like the interstate and nearby retention pond. In both cases, Cherrylake proposed a screen of climbing bamboo to create an eco-friendly, inexpensive living wall that is low maintenance. Cherrylake helped design and build a community garden for residents, using raised wooden container gardens that will give residents an opportunity to work the soil on their own, reaping the restorative benefits of gardening as well as their own fresh produce. Approximately 80% of the trees and 50% of the communities’ shrubs were grown on Cherrylake’s 1,800 acres of farmland in Groveland.

American Airlines Admiral’s Club, OrlandoMader SoutheastPaul Layton, Richard DanaAward of MeritInterior Finishes - Acoustical, Drywall, or Plaster, Commercial, Under $500,000

At one of the country’s busiest airports during normal operating hours, Mader Southeast was contracted to construct an extraordinary assembly of soffits, light coves, columns and partitions at the American Airlines’ Admiral Club’s Orlando lo-cation. Beginning with the management of the existing lounge’s demolition Mader led the charge in the club’s construction. In addition to demolition, the scope of work included extensive radius framing at soffits and columns, and constructing the iconic ceiling and light coves above the clubs circular staircase. To access the lounge, which is located on the airside of the terminal, badging was required for all personnel, while extra security measures were in place for the coordination of material and equipment deliveries and removal of demolished debris across the active tarmac.

The Aspire Health Partners’ 3rd Floor Psychiatric Units project is a behav-ioral health facility that serves our community by ensuring that our citizens are provided the mental health assistance they need to function in society. R. C. Stevens’ 90 years as a design builder in the healthcare market and experience in behavioral health contributed to the project’s success. Their knowledge of Florida’s Agency for Healthcare Administration’s specialized building codes as-sisted the Aspire Health Partners in their decision making process. In addition, R. C. Stevens’ “Right Track™” construction management process provided the Aspire Health Partners with the tools to contain cost and ensure that the project was completed within budget.

Avion Laser Spine Institute, TampaN-RG Cladding, LLCYuri Melnichencko, James Ryan, Mark WeaverAward of MeritExterior Finishes - Other, Commercial, $1-$5 M

N-RG Cladding was tasked to provide the cladding façade for the new Laser Spine Institute building in the Avion office park in Tampa, FL. The exterior of the building, excluding the glass and concrete, consists of N-RG-installed ACM and single skin cladding. The 176,000 square-foot facility has a unique design that presented challenges for the cladding operations. To handle this task, the N-RG team made full use of 3D scanning methods using FARO Technologies equipment. The planning, the use of 3D scanning on-site and the effort put forth resulted in a beautiful new addition to the Tampa skyscape.

Coca Cola® requested DPR’s services to assist with management and construction of a new three-story retail building in newly developed Disney Springs™. The building was designed by Baker Barrios to replicate a 1920’s Coca-Cola® bottling plant. The 18,642-square-foot building sells Coca-Cola® merchandise, beverages and offers a Polar Bear meet-and-greet experience. The building features a one-of-a-kind illuminated entry and bar features, and a unique ramp system with three different substrates. The exterior skin is composed of brick and glass. The glass is 5’ x 10’ laminated glass tinted to replicate the green shade of a Coca-Cola® bottle. Bright Future Electric used cutting edge LED lighting products. The red glass lighting consisted of 1,800 twelve-inch by twelve-inch LED sheets mounted on an interior structure. The main feature is a round custom-designed glass structure with LED spots that represent the bubbles in a glass of Coca Cola®. The lighting system allows dimming of the lights to set a mood in certain areas, especially for Disney Springs™ special functions. The ETFE canopy system installed on the third level is the first ever of its kind in the world, which illuminates from below for maximum impact.

The retro-themed Cabana Bay Beach Resort at Universal Orlando Resort evokes the classic style of Florida beach resorts of the 1950s and 60s. With stunning architecture and vibrant colors, the nostalgic oasis transports guests to a time of relaxation and endless family fun. Cabana Bay Beach Resort guest room expansion consists of two new 11-story hotel towers overlooking Volcano Bay™. The towers add 400 rooms to the existing 1,800, for a total of 2,200 guest rooms and family suites. KHS&S Contractors was contracted to complete the interiors and exteriors of the two towers. Specifically, KHS&S completed the interior finishes, including metal framing, drywall and finishing, acoustical ceiling tiles along with the exterior finishes, of framing, sheathing, EIFS and direct applied finish system. KHS&S took the lead in implementing Lean Construction practices to increase coordination and communication on the project. KHS&S used Pull Planning -- a Lean scheduling technique -- to develop a high-level, coordinated plan for the project. By working from target completion milestones backward, Pull Planning allowed the KHS&S project team to identify and sequence tasks that must be completed to allow work to progress. UCC Group installed 25,000-square-feet of themed concrete flatwork and 1,000 lineal feet of colored retaining/seatwalls. An integration of quality materials, and dedicated craftsmen, while adhering to the schedule has resulted in a spectacular resort that is sure to provide the grandest accommodations to many visitors for years to come.

UCC Group was contracted by Wharton-Smith, Inc. to replace all the sidewalks, roadways, plaza space concrete, pavers and toppings for the Crane Roost Park renovation. UCC also installed new curbing, bridge abatement walls, CIP stairs and well as overlook walls and a boat ramp. There were over 90,000 square-feet of pavers utilized in the roads, pathways, and sidewalks which consisted of eight colors, shapes, and thicknesses. UCC formed, reinforced, placed, and finished almost 100,000 square-feet of picture framed concrete sidewalks throughout the park and entry. To accomplish this in a six month time frame, UCC developed a system to form, place and finish the decorative concrete broom picture-frame finish at the same time that they poured the sub-slabs for the paver banding.

Disney® Area into the retail, dining, and entertainment destination known as Disney Springs™ has transformed this property into a world-class destination with the heritage and heart of a small town. PCL’s scope of work at Disney Springs™ involved the addition of 500,000 square-foot of retail and restaurant space. Some existing Downtown Disney® Area structures were modified with new store fronts, while others received complete interior renovations. PCL worked along with the subcontractors and WDI to bring to life Disney’s vision of an iconic central water feature, creating a large artificial spring that stands as the focal point of the project. In addition, PCL added new hardscape throughout much of Disney Springs™. Acousti Engineering Company of Florida installed the acoustical ceilings, fiber reinforced panels and metal ceiling panels for the 66,000 square-foot Town Center. Altamonte Glass & Mirror, Inc. supplied and installed glass and glazing in 12 new buildings at Disney Springs™. Aluminum framing was fabricated in-house then installed at various locations with six different finishes, both painted and anodized. The framing included many custom bent aluminum arches with patterned glass. Between insulated glass, storefront doors, wood windows, and skylights, a total of 286 openings of various sizes and shapes were framed and glazed. Throughout the project, design choices revolved around creating the appearance of a town that had developed years ago around a collection of natural springs. To create this effect, Cherrylake transplanted six mature trees, one with a 60’ canopy, to various locations within Disney Springs™. Storefronts are punctuated by crape myrtles and birds of paradise plants for bright color while large Magnolia trees provide a screen between the parking garages and the shopping areas. GMF Steel Group was the structural and miscellaneous steel fabricator and erector on over 40 work areas including several new steel structures, highline steel structures, bus loop canopies, and the Disney’s Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa pedestrian bridge. GMF also installed custom railings and other miscellaneous metals throughout the site. Grunau Company’s team divided responsibilities between design-assist and design-build. The fire protection design for shell buildings along with some tenant improvements were required to accommodate high-end finishes, as well as meeting the applicable code/jurisdiction and Factory Mutual standards and requirements. Grunau installed approximately 12,000 total sprinkler heads for all of the venues of the project. JK2 Scenic completed the interior millwork build-out of three projects at Disney Springs™ which included the World of Disney® Store, D-Luxe Burger Restaurant, and the Welcome Center. JK2 was responsible for the fabrication, painting, and installation of the millwork package and decorative themed elements inside the venues, including custom retail casework, cash register stations, decorative furniture pieces, banquette seating, doors and railings, and intricate coffer ceiling and truss surrounds. Starting with preconstruction collaboration with WDI, contractors and architects, KHS&S artisans and craftsmen provided highly themed architectural features, durable and energy-saving exteriors and a dazzling re-creation of a Florida spring highlighted by sculpted and paint-washed rockwork. KHS&S completed interior

build-outs for offices, executive office suites and restrooms in two main buildings to be used by Disney personnel near the entrance to Town Center. On the exterior, KHS&S performed the stucco work on all Town Center buildings, for approximately 260,000 square-feet of stucco applied in several different finishes, using a variety of techniques. Artisans followed drawings that were developed through research of different plastering techniques used in Florida over the last 100 years to create the ambience of an old Florida town given new life. The desired old/new effect was enhanced with decorative, exterior wood work and architectural features, assembled or constructed by KHS&S. “Vintage” facades were created with imported cedar shingles and wood lap siding. Perhaps the most striking contribution was the spring itself, a man-made waterway designed to look like a real spring with handcrafted ledges, canyons and other faux natural features. KHS&S created metal structures and used various color techniques to achieve the illusion of depths and shadows. Faux roots, logs, stumps and moss enhance the man-made landscape and create a transitional zone between the water and the natural landscaping. The spring also features a weathered look to emulate erosion by weather and the sands of time. P & A Roofing and Sheet Metal, Inc. provided roofing services, which included multiple roofing systems for many different areas. This project includes shakes, standing seam, presidential shingles, architectural shingles, single ply roofing, modified bitumen, specialty sheet clay, concrete tile, concrete pavers, and metal work manufactured in P & A’s in-house sheet metal manufacturing warehouse. Randall Mechanical, Inc. completed plumbing and mechanical systems key to making Disney Springs™ a memorable and enjoyable experience. The plumbing scope included sanitary lines, storm lines, gas lines, domestic hot and cold water lines, installing front and back of house fixtures, installing kitchen equipment, and installation of grease traps. Two separate teams were scheduled, one doing preparation work during the day and the other installing the systems at night. Materials and equipment were scheduled for night shift delivery; heavy equipment and materials were transported across the waterways via boats, rafts, and temporary bridges. S&S Roofing Systems installed approximately 100,000 square-feet the roofing systems including standing seam metal panels, flat seam metal shingles, clay tile, synthetic shingle and synthetic shake. Roofs were installed on 14 separate structures over the course of an aggressive nine-month schedule. One building has a complex roof system that is a tile turret roof, with a distinctive feature that required custom cutting of each individual tile to conform to the decreasing radius roof. Sigma Marble & Granite installed tile at seven different buildings throughout Disney Springs™. Each building had a unique style and different material finishes, which resulted in installing over 40 different

tile types from 12 different tile manufacturers. Exterior tile work included installation on the exterior face of building storefronts, as well as tile installation on exterior stair risers and on an overhead soffit that received a four tile pattern. The interior work mainly consisted of six sets of restrooms, which had as many as nine different tile types. These tiles ranged from 6” x 6” hexagon tile for the floors, to 4” x 8” wall tile with both 4” x 4” and 7” x 7” wall accent tiles as well. Tri-City Electrical Contractors, Inc.’s work was in two main phases, The Landing and the Town Center, with a total of over 100 buildings and structures receiving electrical, fire alarm and lightning protection systems. Work in The Landing was renovations in existing buildings and installation in new buildings, which included the Boathouse and the Hangar Bar, along with light posts on the elevated railways. The Town Center included the Welcome Center, new offices, kiosks, burger shop, European bakery, and World of Disney® store expansion. Existing underground utilities were relocated as needed. Tucker Paving completed new construction, re-routing all existing underground potable water, fire line and sanitary systems to Raglan Road Irish Pub, Portobello Italian Restaurant, The Hangar Bar, Paradiso 37, The Boathouse and Morimoto Asia. Tucker Paving completed the demolition and new installation of all of the drainage systems throughout the 200 acre complex. Disney Springs™ was a project that involved close, daily coordination with solutions to logistical challenges. Part renovation, part new construction, Disney Springs™ is centered around a spring water feature, surrounded by themed concrete resembling tile, stone, dirt pathways, exposed shell paths, wooden decks and even railway turntables. UCC delivered 795,000 square-feet of themed hardscape consisting of 80 different paving types, 6,400 linear-feet of walls, and 145,000 square feet of back-of-house paving along with eight fountain features. With such a large variety of finishes, from recycled pavers to stamped faux coral stone concrete, UCC was a significant contributor on Disney Springs™. Disney Springs™ is a unique gathering of venues where guests can enjoy the small-town charm of the area, and the appeal of a man-made spring that captures the feel of Florida’s natural beauty. Structures both existing and new have been blended to create four cohesive neighborhoods that together make for a premier retail, restaurant, and entertainment destination.

Disney Springs™ houses a unique and iconic restaurant aboard a reimagined, modern, and luxurious steamboat. Once known as Fulton’s Crab House, Entech Innovative was contacted to design, engineer, fabricate, and install the smokestacks and the paddle wheel on the boat at the newly named Paddlefish Restaurant to complete the look of a historic river boat. The paddlewheel itself is a static structure wherein the primary shaft is a reinforced hot-dipped galvanized 12-inch schedule 40 pipe with bolted 4 x 4 aluminum tube as spokes welded flange plates. The paddles themselves are fabricated of aluminum box tube with bonded and riveted aluminum skin panels to create a stressed-skin nature. Wood graining was created with the use of a press molded epoxy overlay, scenically painted and washed. Tri-City Electrical Contractors, Inc. provided electrical, lighting, data/communication, and fire alarm systems for the new remodeled Paddlefish restaurant on the water in Disney Springs. Formerly the iconic Fulton’s Crab House, this 31,680 square foot, three-level, steam boat replica underwent a complete remodel. One unique feature Tri-City Electrical installed was a lighted handrail on all the exterior stairwells. Paddlefish’s new modern design affords guests beautiful views and its delicious menu is certain to keep this restaurant a Disney Springs treasure.

MLC Theming, Inc. started the project with selective demolition to enable the new configuration of the ride and show. New walls and interior buildings were erected which established the path of travel for the future guests to and from the boat ride. Rock work cages were built throughout the many ride scenes which supports the themed character plaster and show set figures. Along with WDI Art Direction, MLC carved the themed plaster into various textures such as rock, tree trunks, heavy timber, stacked stones, and snow. The plaster formations were then theme painted to create a realistic feel for each item. MLC Theming self-performed all work to create and complete a beautiful and magical attraction. Tharp Plumbing started the renovation with the removal of some existing air piping to the original attraction animatronic devices. Tharp then completed the plumbing build-out package of the ride and ride building, which included the expansion of the ride path to accommodate the new ride entry, as well as a complete new air piping system with air compressor and multiple storage tanks to operate all of the air pneumatics and animatronics. In addition to the renovation of the existing restrooms, an addition of another large themed restroom was included in the scope of work. KHS&S’ theming expertise helped bring high levels of detail to the Royal Sommerhus, a new “meet and greet” area for Anna and Elsa, the beloved characters of Disney’s animated movie, Frozen®. Part of the Epcot®Frozen Ever After Attraction is the intricately themed replica of the princesses’ summer home allowing guests to immerse themselves in heirlooms, artwork, relics and décor from both the movie and the country of Norway. KHS&S completed interior and exterior specialty construction. To achieve the desired theme, the project required expertise in a variety of themed construction methods, including carved plaster, themed painting, decorative woodwork, rockwork and natural stonework. The engaging home is modeled after an actual building at the Sverresborg Trondelag Folk Museum in Trondheim, Norway. Every element of the décor is consistent with Scandinavian architecture and crafts.

WELBRO provided construction management services for the new 40,000 square-foot Banyan Park Villas at the Give Kids the World Village in Kissimmee. The first of three planned identical buildings, this $6,300,000 project began in October 2015 and was completed in November 2016. The resort is for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families to stay while visiting the local theme parks. The three-story resort includes 24 luxurious villas that will allow 1,300 more families to visit the village each year for a cost free week long vacation. Each unit is equipped with wireless internet, flat screen televisions, two full baths, a full kitchen, living room, washer and dryer. The building is composed of block with hollow core precast floors. Bright Future Electric performed the entire electrical installation for the project, consisting of switchgear, interior and exterior fixtures, structured cabling, CCTV, fire alarm, access control and lightning protection systems. The electrical system for the building consisted of a 2,500 amp 208 volt 3 phase service including two 800 amp distribution panels and a 125 amp panel in each unit. To plan for the demanding project schedule, Bright Future installed a well-planned underground raceway system to minimize the time needed to install the interior building electrical.

This 1,000-room resort hotel (including 83 suites) is a mix of rustic and Caribbean-inspired decor giving the guests a feeling of a tropical oasis. The resort features a full-service restaurant with scenic water views and a Caribbean-style marketplace food court. Amenities include a zero-entry pool (the largest among the five on-site hotels), waterfalls, water-slide, fitness center, poolside bar & grill, lobby bar, and arcade. Operated by Loews Hotels, this is the fifth hotel on the Universal Orlando property and is Loews’ second largest convention hotel featuring 131,000 square feet of convention space and meeting rooms. Advanced Millwork’s scope included the reception desks, decorative louvers, custom rum barrel ceiling, the curved stair handrail, cabinetry, decorative metals and glass, concrete and stone countertops, ceiling beams in the restaurants, and the cladding of the lobby trusses. CCK Construction Services scope of work involved 1.08 million square-feet of cast in place slabs, consisting of 49,650 CY concrete, approximately 2,500 tons of reinforcing and 610,892 lbs. of Post Tension Cable. This project had several unique aspects to consider in order to logically plan scheduling and installation. The most significant aspect is the resorts entry, which is 30 feet above the predominant amenities. Amenities include a multi-function exhibit hall, three meal dining, Lagoon access to boat dock, outdoor event pavilion with the resort pool that sits 19 feet above ground and its accompanying amenities.

Mercon was the site work subcontractor, whose scope included earth work, grading lagoon construction, final grading, water mains, sanitary sewer lines, sewer lift station, storm drainage system and partial paving. Met-Con, Inc. supplied and installed all structural, miscellaneous and ornamental metals for this project. This included beams and columns, long span trusses, bar joists and decking, stairs, handrail and miscellaneous metals. All structural and miscellaneous metals were fabricated by Met-Con at their Cocoa facility. The long span trusses were 160’ in length and had to be assembled on site before erection. This was a fast track project with constantly changing priorities. Modern Plumbing Industries, Inc. (MPI) was awarded the contract for plumbing which included two public area bathrooms and 1,000 guest rooms which spread out among ten 6-8 story buildings. MPI installed sanitary and storm systems; condensate, domestic water, piping, and fixtures. With approximately 97% of the work self-performed by MPI, the Sapphire Falls Resort took approximately nineteen months to build and there were over 40 employees from Modern Plumbing working on the project. Sigma Marble and Granite installed over 120,000 square feet of floor and wall tile throughout the common areas, restaurants, pool bar, back of house kitchens, locker rooms, and restrooms, while also polishing a

combined 18,000 square feet of concrete in the main lobby and first floor arrival areas. Terry’s Electrical did the complete site package for the eight, nine-story buildings which included the pool building with bar & kitchen, site poles, landscape lights, show falls lighting, restaurant, bar & café, retail shop, meeting rooms and convention exhibit hall with multiple levels, kitchens and meeting rooms. UCC Group’s work consisted of over 137,000 square-feet of hardscape construction, using a multitude of finishes including stamped, rock salt, broom, colored and exposed aggregate which made up the majority of finishes across the pool deck, walkways and entry driveway. UCC also constructed retaining walls, stairs, fire pit as well as installed planters, cabanas and tree grates.

Located in the downtown area of Orlando is the new, $155 million state of the art venue, Orlando City Soccer Stadium. With its open-air design and below grade playing field, the construction of the 425,000 square-foot facility boasts a sprawling 25,500 capacity seating, 31 luxury suites, and a 3,800 person safe standing area referred to as The Wall, which allows spectators to occupy a space that harkens back to the traditional design of a European Soccer pitch. Architectural Glass Services installed Nana Wall on the concourse level main bar, while Solar Innovations folding wall systems and swing doors were used in the 31 suites facing the pitch to give patrons an unobstructed view. Interior accents in the suites and player locker rooms include back painted glass in various colors to accompany the interior décor or to provide a solid background for use as a marker board for strategic planning. The custom purple that represents the team’s colors is reproduced throughout the stadium, on walls, signs, and guest chairs and is reproduced on the curtainwall extended cover throughout the stadium exterior window walls. On the concourse level, glass panels on the door inserts and the sidelights match this color. Cornerstone installed the foundations for the soccer stadium; which included cast-in-place spread footings, continuous footings, and grade beams. Cornerstone also installed slab on grade for the concourse areas, boxes,

and locker room areas. After the structural steel was erected, and the Cornerstone team members were trained in site specific fall protection procedures and then installed the slab on metal deck for the club area, press level, concourses, and Orlando City Soccer Club offices; as well as pan filled stairs and camera stands. On October 16, 2015, ground was broken. Soon after, placement of the first of thousands of feet of underground electrical infrastructure was in the dirt. These would eventually lead to multiple electrical rooms, which fed 150 electrical panels to provide the source electricity to Light Up Orlando City. Multiple concession stands, lounge areas, as well as the Panasonic Scoreboard are just some of the amenities that grace the stadium because of the electrical systems constructed by Tri-City Electrical Contractors. The canopy lighting feature meets a unique set of specifications in order to be arranged to eliminate the appearance of clutter, and because of the extreme angle of the bowl seating. All of this is controlled by a specially designed lighting control system. Tri-City showcased its expertise in commercial electrical contracting with non-stop, multiple shifts, seven days a week. The stadium was completed in time to open early for its first televised game of the season.

2017 Excellence in Construction Awards 37

Pandora - The World of Avatar project is the design and construction of a new interactive attraction in an existing theme park. Balfour Beatty’s scope of work included highly themed development, support facilities, and ride and show elements necessary to deliver a one-of-a-kind guest experience. From the onset, this project has an integrated strategy with the construction and project team co-locating. The goal was to foster a true team environment through collaboratively developing the project through the combination of innovative ideas and technology. Pandora - The World of Avatar creates a mystical land that has come to life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom®Theme Park. Tropical gardens with exotic plants thrive throughout the land that is surrounded by floating mountains, waterfalls, and bioluminescent pathways. The project includes a six-story 3D ride building, a meandering canoe ride, a QSR restaurant, a merchandise building, restrooms, and a new exterior theater inside the park known as the Night Time Show. As a subcontractor to Balfour Beatty, CCK assisting in making this project a reality, actualized through well-organized schedule planning, productive site management, commitment to researching and implementing cutting edge cost management, and proven critical path scheduling. CCK was contracted to provide all material, labor, and equipment for the placing the structural concrete. This included special foundations for steel structures, retaining walls, buildings, and props and lights placed in the Area Development phase of the project. For their contribution to Pandora – The World of Avatar, MLC Theming, Inc. started with the themed character plaster efforts in area development and building exteriors under the guidance of WDI. As the project developed, their scope expanded into the building interiors where skilled craftsmen worked on themed character plaster, installation of ride cladding, and installation

of show sets in close coordination with all the other trades. WDI described this expansion of the Disney Animal Kingdom®Theme Park as “an experience that’s as realistic and immersive as possible.” Mader’s contracted scope included interior metal framed, insulated drywall assemblies (partitions and ceilings) and level five finishes (front and back-of-house) on multiple buildings across the Valley of Mo’ara – including attraction queues and theaters, Windtraders (retail) and the Satu’li Canteen (dining). P & A Roofing worked multiple shifts to meet the quality and schedule demands of the project. Many types of roofing systems were installed to create the realistic atmosphere of a rainforest. First was the applying of the modified roofing to most roof surfaces, then applying specialty finishes. Thatch roofing material helped bring the theme of the park to life. In addition to the design-assist support, Randall Mechanical completed the plumbing and mechanical systems which helped make the project successful and a memorable experience for the guests and cast members. Plumbing and mechanical work included water filtration, gas lines, installation of fixtures in the front and back-of-house areas, manufacturing and installation of sheet metal duct and insulation, and all equipment for a fully, functioning air conditioning system. A project highlight was the piping installed inside the floating mountain (at a high elevation) which supplied the water to the falls and streams. These same streams then flowed into the area

development sections giving the guests an inspiring real-life interaction with the plants.

Tucker Paving was the site work contractor performing the demolition of the existing hardscape, final grading, the fire line, potable waterline, gravity sanitary, gravity storm, and force main. They were contracted to assist with completed the scope of work another contractor had originally started. They completed necessary repairs to gravity feed systems, and these corrections required off-hour shifts to gain access to areas where finishes were already in place. This was a very fast paced project that involved careful coordination and logistical solutions. The Team and trade partners used close scheduling sessions to create a schedule to deliver the work as needed. With patience and teamwork, all were able to meet the challenge and produce this mystical land that you have to experience to appreciate. As the Na’vi would say oel ngati kameie (I see you). All were honored to have been a part of this beautiful creation.

The renovation of Planet Hollywood® has transformed the venue into anew, customized dining experience for guests at Disney Springs™. As one of the first structures seen by guests as they enter into Disney Springs™, the iconic Planet Hollywood® observatory restaurant renovation had to make a statement. A favorite of celebrities, Planet Hollywood® was transformed into a part of the Disney Springs™ storyline and features multiple themes that represent Hollywood through the ages. As general contractor for this project, PCL’s scope of work included a full interior renovation, new construction of a main entrance (“The Observatory”), retail space, office space, and shell space for a 1,700 square-foot future quick service restaurant. The full interior renovation included the replacement of new finishes and millwork. The exterior skin of the building was replaced with a proprietary roofing system. KHS&S also played a major role when it came time to re-imagine this Hollywood-themed restaurant as part of the Downtown Disney® Area’s transformation into Disney Springs™. KHS&S performed the detailed construction of interior and exterior walls in the conversion of the restaurant’s blue globe theme to a four-story, Victorian-era, stargazing observatory. KHS&S’s scope included the interior framing, drywall and finishing, as well as the exterior framing, waterproofing, sheathing and synthetic stucco finishing. A key element of the interiors was a 4,500-square-foot video screen that takes up half the upper level of the domed ceiling. Enabled with new technology, the screen allows restaurant guests to view videos that appear three-dimensional without wearing 3-D eyeglasses. Energy Air was contracted by PCL Construction Services for installation and improvement of the mechanical systems including air handling units, condensors, pumps, precipitators, piping, ductwork, fans, and louvers. Site constraints and additional design requirements added complexity to this renovation project, creating numerous challenges, each executed successfully through careful planning, communication, and coordination with PCL and other subcontractor trades. For Energy Air this building was as unique in its scope and itsprofile. PCL worked alongside Elkus Manfredi, the interior concept architect, Morris Architects, the architect of record, the Owner, and all subcontractors to deliver this new restaurant overlooking the spring at Disney Springs™.

To accommodate more guests and minimize wait times for riders, a third theater was added to one of the park’s most frequented attractions, Disney’s Soarin’® Attraction located within Epcot®. The new theater includes an 87-seat mechanical lift system that suspends guests in the air facing an 80-foot concave projection screen to view a 4K presentation transporting riders to landmarks and natural phenomena around the world. The project scope also included modifications to the existing Land building to allow for increased building capacity driven by the addition of a new theater, new guest entry and exit corridors, queue lines, a film strip room, new restrooms, and a two-stop elevator. HARPER was contracted to complete the mechanical and plumbing scope of work for the new theater. The work included an increased capacity of men’s and women’s gang bathrooms to handle the additional guest use. The restrooms utilized prefabricated toilet carrier racks to accelerate the installation schedule. The mechanical scope included smoke evacuation, general HVAC and cooling of an extensive server room that operates the show. The smoke control system included over 80,000 CFM of combined makeup and exhaust air. General HVAC included approximately 60,000 CFM of chilled water cooling with hot water reheat of Interior and Exterior units. Ductwork included up to 48” diameter double wall spiral duct installed at elevations of 85” above finished floor as well as general corridor and office space routing. S&S Roofing Systems was contracted for the installation of 23,600 square-feet of standing seam metal roof and modified bitumen low-slope roofing at the Soarin® Attraction. The 90-foot long metal roof panels were fabricated from 3,000 lb. coils in the field and hoisted over 100 feet to the roof deck where the panels were installed using mechanical seamers. To successfully deliver the project in the eight month time frame, deliveries were scheduled in precise time slots and materials were moved to staging areas within the building as needed. To achieve and maintain a safe work environment, all on-site personnel participated in daily pre-shift stretching, tool-box talks and job hazard analysis. The third theatre for the Soarin® Attraction connected to an existing building with existing foundations that were lower than the existing building. Tucker Paving’s project team excavated and removed all the excess material, working around operational utilities that service Epcot®. Tucker Paving completed demolition of the hardscape, final grading, fire line, potable waterline, gravity sanitary, gravity storm, and force main. Tucker Paving completed a waterline installation and associated re-routing, while maintaining water to the Living of the Land® Attraction. This required working on an accelerated schedule to maintain the proper sea life environment. The project produces the feeling of flight using a 180-degree, 80-foot IMAX projection dome and aerially captured footage that simulates the graceful motion of a hang glider. Mader’s contracted scope included interior and perimeter metal framed, insulated drywall assemblies (partitions and ceilings) and level five finishes (front and back-of-house) including attraction queues and a new eight-story theater. Work also included the successful interface and renovation of existing attraction queues.

The new, three-story, 27,000 square-foot structure in the middle of Stetson’s historic district is now welcoming prospective students and their parents to campus, assisting current students and welcoming alumni back to campus. The first floor includes a reception desk, waiting areas, presentation rooms, and interview rooms. The second floor includes the “One Stop” service area for student financial planning, offices of the Registrar and Bursar, along with career and professional services. The third floor is home to the Recruiting Operations Center. The supporting structure for this building is block. There are 3,800 twelve inch units up to the water table and 16,500 eight inch units above that to support the brick. There are 59,000 modular field brick with custom colored mortar finished with antique jointing on this project. Pyramid Masonry installed a “diapering” pattern band around the top of the building, accomplished in multiple steps. First, they used an alternate colored solid header brick and project stretcher brick at the bottom. Next, they used alternating colors in a stretcher and header pattern and precisely laid a rowlock finishes the top. The projections at the top and bottom frame out and give depth to the “diapering” pattern. This project also has a custom brick water table shape. The Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon attraction building’s façade was to be a mini replica of 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York, the building that houses Studio 6B where the Tonight Show is broadcast. Theming required KENPAT to first frame a substrate over the existing structure, then to install the GFRC, and then FRP panels over that, all in the middle of the night outside of park hours. Exterior work also included the creation and installation of architectural details to ensure the finished exterior was a precise match for the Rockefeller Center building. KENPAT also provided the interior and external metal framing, drywall, insulation, acoustical ceilings, acoustical wood wall panels, and interior FRP panels. The walls in the theaters were radius sound walls (double stud walls, six layers of gypsum board, resilient channel and insulation) on walls that were over 80’ tall from the slab to deck. Once the drywall was installed, black-faced insulation was added over that to further deaden the sound. JK2 Scenic completed the millwork build-out of this attraction. The project included custom wood and metal trim details to bring the replication of The Tonight Show’s Studio 6B to reality. JK2 was responsible for the fabrication, staining, and installation of the millwork package and decorative display areas within the ride queue line, pre-show area, VIP lounge, and retail store. The millwork scope included the installation of decorative wood wall paneling, column wraps, wood ceiling beams, and soffit lighting coves. Millwork cabinetry was installed in the retail store,

break room, serving room, VIP area, bathrooms, and back of house areas. Gulf Mechanical Contractors installed the plumbing and HVAC for the Universal Studio’s attraction. Working multiple shifts, Gulf Mechanical coordinated around other trades to install the ductwork with varying heights and elevations. Varying heights and elevations throughout the building especially in the theaters required the use of special equipment; install logistics at the same time making sure that equipment was kept out of the guests’ sight. From the complete wall-to-wall demolition of the Twister attraction to the intricate multi-level catwalk system design of the new Jimmy Fallon Tonight Show attraction, Service Complete Electric was proud to partner with Wharton Smith and Universal Orlando. Unique challenges were posed with the electrical systems and cable pathway installation, including providing power to the wide-ranging show lighting mounted throughout the catwalk systems, multiple projection booths and numerous hydraulic systems that operate the motion seating in the existing ride theatres. Two services consisting of 1600amp and 2000amp switchboards supported by an emergency generator provided power and emergency power for the complex. All this work was accomplished in tight quarters, with the limitation of the use of lifts, and restriction on work hours. The completed project is a clear success that work on the “Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon” attraction truly exhibits Excellence in Construction.
