The office is now referred to as the Environmental Health and Safety Office. The name change was made to better reflect all of the ser- vices currently being provided. The EH&S office hopes to post quarterly updates of things happening in the office and around campus. Be sure to check out the updates by visiting the EH&S webpage, found on the Otterbein Ozone under the Environmental Health and Safety Index. Otterbein’s Environmental Health and Safety Office Recent News September 2013 Fire Extinguisher Awareness The Environmental Health and Safety Office in conjunction with the Wester- ville Fire Department is proud to offer fire extinguisher training whenever possible on Otterbein’s Campus. Uni- versity policy does not require em- ployees to use fire extinguishers; how- ever, this training is beneficial for all employees who conduct specific haz- ardous operations, such as working in Equine facilities or laboratories. In August the EH&S Office was able to coordinate training for both the Otter- bein Austin E. Knowlton Equine Cen- ter employees as well as for the Chem- istry Faculty and Student Laboratory Teaching Assistants. The training was led by Brian Miller, the Chief Fire Marshal in Westerville. This training is recommended for all employees or students that work in high risk areas or who would just simply like to enhance their emergency preparedness skills. Anyone can benefit from this type of training and The Westerville Fire De- partment enjoys reaching out to the community through Fire Education.

Fire Extinguisher Awareness The Environmental Health and Safety

Equine Center Participants on Aug. 21, 2013: Emma Heald, Evan McCul-len, Phillip McCullen, Savannah Bryne, Molly O’Halloran, Kris Adams, Kari Briggs and Paul King.

Brian Miller leads Otterbein Faculty, Staff and Students in Fire Extinguisher Training at both the Austin E. Knowlton Equine Center on Spring Road as well as the Science Center on Main Street. The training covers the basics of fire safety, the different types of extinguishers and the concepts of RACE and PASS. All participants get to actually handle an extinguisher, pull the pin and put out a live fire.

Here’s an interesting Extinguisher Fact: Otterbein currently has

the only “D Fire Extinguisher” in the Westerville Response Area.

Class D extinguishers are designed for fires involving metals

such as magnesium, sodium, and potassium.
