DAY 9Wednesday

10/27/21

AmmanAmmanWhile there are many theories to where the city name Amman came

from, the most widely accepted is from the 13th century BC. It isbelieved that the name is derived from the Ammonites who named it“Rabbath Ammon” meaning “King’s Quarters.” Since then, the“Rabbath” has been dropped and “Ammon” westernized to “Amman,”leaving the modern city name we know today. There was a shortperiod of time when the city was renamed by the occupyingMacedonian ruler to “Philadelphia!”

City Tour Take a city tour of Amman that includes the Citadel, the Archaeological Museum, the Roman Theater, theFolklore Museum, and then a walk downtownthrough the bazaars and the Gold Market. Highabove the city, at the ancient Citadel, study thetraces of Amman’s many lives: the regal columns ofa Roman temple in silhouette against the sky; theelegant capitals of a Byzantine church; endlesslyinventive carvings in the Umayyad Palace;fascinating displays in the Archaeological Museum;and digs and ruins everywhere you step. At the footof the Citadel is the Roman Theater, a deep-sidedbowl carved into the hill and still used for culturalevents.

Jerash Drive to Jerash, where you will have lunch in a localrestaurant. After lunch, take some time to exploreJerash. Second only to Petra in tourist appeal, theancient Roman city of Jerash is an archaeologicalmasterpiece, and remarkable for its long chain ofhuman occupation. Here at a well-watered siteframed by the hills of Gilead, remains from Neolithictimes have been found, as well as ruins from othercivilizations: Greek, Roman, Byzantine, andUmayyad. a prime example of how untrue this generalization is. The variations innatural settings in such a small country are truly spellbinding. In the south are the vast deserts of the Badia Region.Between the two lie the mountain highlands of Jordan where you findthe most abundant vegetation amongst mountains and plateaus.

When theweather is clear, you should even be able to seeJerusalem, which is about 35 miles away.

Adventure Travel TodayAt AdventureWomen, we wanteveryone to understand that ourexcursions are adventure travelvacations and not “tours.” Wedefine “adventure travel” as travel in which one activelyparticipates, as opposed to a“tour,” in which one is more or less a passive observer. AdventureWomen designs andorganizes vacations all over theworld for women who want toexperience an active, out of theordinary vacation, and meet new friends. Most of all, we want our trips to be fun! In this spirit, the successful adventure traveler should be a

good-natured realist and have asense of humor! Adventurevacations, by nature, require thatparticipants be self- sufficient, flexible, and able to acceptsituations as they exist, and notjust as they would have preferredor expected them to exist. Theconstraints of scheduled grouptraveling also necessitate thateach of us be understanding ofand sensitive to others. Being ontime is important, andcontributes to the congeniality, success and well-being of bothindividuals and the group!
