LOUIS POULSEN

Founded in 1874, the Danish lighting manufacturer Louis Poulsen creates products that encompass the duality of design and light. Every detail in the

design has a purpose. Every design starts and ends with light. Louis Poulsen offers a range of lighting aimed at the commercial and

zdomestic lighting markets, with lights and solutions for both indoor andoutdoor applications. In close partnership with designers and architects like

Poul Henningsen, Arne Jacobsen, Verner Panton,Øivind Slaatto, Alfred Homann, Oki Sato and GamFratesi, Louis Poulsen has

established itself as one of the key suppliers of architectural anddecorative lighting and has a global presence with dedicated showrooms in Copenhagen, Stockholm, Miami, Oslo, Los Angeles, Tokyo and Dusseldorf.

Louis Poulsen has always sought, not only to design lamps, but also to shape light and create an atmosphere that makes people feel good, both

in- and outdoors. The shape of light creates space and our products should live harmoniously within the space they define - indirect, soft and inviting.

ARTICHOKE

The PH Artichoke was designed in 1958 by Poul Henningsen for the Langelinie Pavillonen, a modernist Copenhagen restaurant where it continues to enchant visitors today. With its world-famous unique sculptural design, the PH Artichoke is viewed as an international design icon. The fixture has 72 leaves, positioned so as to provide totally glare-free light

from any angle. To ensure a high level of quality, much of the production process is still carried out by hand. The renowned light fixture has kept its original copper finish, which to this date illuminates spaces with its warm and

ambient lighting.

Poul Henningsen developed the PH 5 in 1958 in response to constant changes to the shape and size of incandescent bulbs by bulb manufacturers. At the introduction of the PH 5, Poul Henningsen wrote the following: “After 33 years of basically Christian behaviour I have converted to Islam in my relationship to the manufacture of incandescent bulbs. For a generation I have believed that consideration for the consumer and common sense would prevail, but now I

have become a fatalist. I have accepted fate, and with Louis Poulsen´s permission I have designed a PH fixture which can be used with any kind of light source, Christmas lights and 100 W metal-filament bulbs. Although a fluorescent

tube would be too much to ask in the existing form!”

The pendant was named PH 5 because of the 50-centimetre diameter of its top shade. Louis Poulsen now launches a mini version of the iconic PH 5 with a top shade diameter of 30 centimetres. The Mini will be available in the Classic colour version of PH 5, a new contemporary white, and an additional six colour

combinations: Hues of Orange, Hues of Rose, Hues of Red, Hues of Green, Hues of Blue and Hues of Grey.

The fixture provides 100% glare-free light. Poul Henningsen developed the PH 5 in 1958 as a follow-up to his celebrated three-shade system. The fixture emits both downward and lateral light, thus illuminating itself. In the PH 5 Classic, a warmer tone of light is

created by the inside red cone and a small blue reflector.

Originally introduced in the 1950’s . Was designed in close cooperation between the Navy Buildings Department and Louis Poulsen. The pendant was used for many years in the builidngs of the Navy for many different applications such as canteens and offices. The Navy Pendant, which was the name at that time, was widely used because of the unique lighting properties and utility. Not until the early 1980’s the product was taken out

of the Louis Poulsen catalogues. The design appears timeless but has a strong connection to the New Look of the 1950s.

It was reintroduced as Doo-Wop in 2012 in new colours and a brass version.

The PH 3½-3 Glass Pendant is one of many advanced projects undertaken by Poul Henningsen in the development of his world-famous three-shade system from 1926. Poul Henningsen devoted most of his life to taming electric light. He based his three-shade design on a logarithmic spiral to make optimum use of the light source. He was constantly doing calculations and tests. The form of the shades was determined by the way they were required to shape and

reflect the light, and the lamp was designed to be glare-free.

Panthella Table and Panthella Floor were designed by Verner Panton in 1971 and remain one of his most popular light designs. The organic shapes are typical for a Verner Panton design, as were the many strong colours the light was originally available in. Verner Panton wanted to create a light where both the foot and the shade served as a light reflector. The lamp used to be

produced in several colours. Today it is available in white.

PH 2/1 Table is a member of the 3-shade family which numbers 30 lamps today, including three for outdoor use. Thus PH did not just design a light, but an entire sys-tem – around a thousand different models have been produced over the years. This wide selection consisted of table, floor and wall lamps, as well as a number of different chandeliers, which were very popular in the 1930s for lighting private homes from high ceilings. There were countless combination options. The lights were available in different colours, as well as a range of sizes. The first shades were made of metal with a painted undersurface, such as white, gold or silver – depending on whether diffuse,

warm or cold light was desired

The PH 3½-2½ Glass Table lamp was designed in 1928 and is one of many advanced projects undertaken by Poul Henningsen in the development of his world-famous three-shade system from 1926. Poul Henningsen devoted most of his life to taming electric light. He based his three-shade design on a logarithmic spiral to make op-timum use of the light source. He was constantly doing calculations and tests. The form of the shades was determined by the way they were required to shape and reflect the light, and the lamp was designed to be glare-free. The first PH Table lamp was completed in early 1927 and launched as an alternative to low-pitched hanging lamps. The white opal glass shades soften the overall look of the lamp and illuminate

its surroundings with a perfect, harmonious and glare-free light that only the classic three-shade system is capable of emitting. The shades are mouth-blown three-layer opal glass, which is glossy on-top and sandblasted matt underneath to provide soft and uniform light distribution.

The AJ lamps were designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1960 for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen (Radisson Blu), and contributed to the total design concept of the hotel. Several of the hotel items have achieved design icon status today, and among the lighting products the AJ lamps in particular have become world renowned. Five new colour variants were introduced in connection with the 50th anniversary of the launch of the AJ family. The new colours have been carefully chosen in line

with an updated Arne Jacobsen colour scheme.

Panthella Floor and Panthella Table were designed by Verner Panton in 1971 and remain one of his most popular light designs. The organic shapes are typical for a Verner Panton design, as were the many strong colours the light was originally available in. Verner Panton wanted to create a light where both the foot and the shade served as a light reflector. The lamp used to be produced in several colours.

Today it is available in white.

The 3½-2½ Floor light is a member of the three-shade family which numbers 30 lights today, including three for outdoor use. Thus PH did not just design a light, but an entire system – around a thousand different models have been produced over the years. This wide selection consisted of table, floor and wall lamps, as well as a number of different chandeliers, which were very pop-ular in the 30s for lighting private homes from high ceilings. There were countless combination

options. The lights were available in different colours, as well as a range of sizes. The first shades were made of metal with a painted undersurface, such as white, gold or silver –

depending on whether diffuse, warm or cold light was desired.

PH 3/2 Wall consists of an approximately 30 cm top shade, but uses lower shades from the 2/2 model. These ‘hybrid’ models were introduced due to the desire to hang pendants at lower heights. The system

was also used for wall, floor and table lamps.
