BELGRADE

EGATIN Study Days 2014 Belgrade

Belgrade is very excited to be the hosting city of EGATIN Study Days 2014

Belgrade lies upon two rivers. Danube river is the aquatic route connecting the countries of Western and Middle Europe to the countries of the South-eastern and Eastern Europe. Sava river is known in ex-Yugoslavia for connecting 4 of its 6 republics. The length of the river banks in Belgrade is 200 km, with 16 river islands.

Belgrade has been permanently settled since the mid Neolithic period, more then 4,000 years BC. It became the capital of modern Serbia in 19th century. At that time, Belgrade gradually grew from an oriental town to a modern mid-European city. The name Belgrade was first recorded in IX century. In Serbian, it means “the white city”. Belgrade had around 10 names in the past, as each conqueror claimed it.

Today, city has a population of over 1,7 million, which is more then a quarter of Serbia population!

Belgraders love to talk about the spirit of the city. Also, they will claim to be true hedonists – and many of them really are – knowing all about good food, wine and music.

They are very hospitable to foreigners, and all can speak some English.

The citizens of Belgrade like sitting in café bars, drinking long morning coffee. They also like being in motion and therefore the streets, cafes and restaurants are always filled with people.

“Belgrade is a fantastic European city, connected to the world.” Andzej Wajda, film director

“I am particularly impressed by the bright and warm atmosphere of Belgrade.” Samuel Beckett, drama writer

“I also came to Belgrade because I have never been in this region (1973). In a short time I have found two things: the food is excellent, and the approach to cinema is far more intellectual then in America.” Jack Nicholson, actor

Climate in Belgrade is not particularly harsh. January is the coldest month, with average temperatures around 0 C. Umbrellas are mostly in use during May and June, and sunlight is mostly plentiful in July and August.

Late April is the most beautiful time of the year to visit Belgrade, and experience beautiful springtime. This month is characterized by rising daily high temperatures from 16 to 20 degrees C.

“The sky above Belgrade is expansive and high, shifting yet always beautiful. Clear with its chill splendor during the winter; turning into a single downcast cloud during summer storms, driven by the crazy winds and bearing rain, mixed with the dust of the Pannonian plain; seeming to flower along with the ground during spring; and growing heavy with roils of autumnal stars during fall. Always beautiful and bountiful, it is a reward to this odd township for all that is missing and a comfort for everything that should not be.”

Ivo Andric, author and Nobel prize winner
