Executive Message

It has been a year of exciting transition at the Education Foundation of

Niagara. In May, our new Executive Director, Cindy Paskey joined with

Dara Goulet to continue our work supporting DSBN students in areas

where government funding is not available.

Soon after, the Board of Directors undertook a strategic planning initiative.

This led to the development of new vision, mission and value statements

and to establishing four strategic directions to guide our work.

Strategic Directions

The board also created a five-year action plan to achieve our strategic directions. In 2014/15, board

committees are focusing on governance and philanthropic development. A planned giving program is

being launched in partnership with the Niagara Community Foundation. Operational changes focus on

increasing the effective and efficient allocation of our resources.

With these structures in place, we are moving into the 2014/15 fiscal year with a focus on long term

financial sustainability that is designed to increase support available to DSBN students.

All of this is made possible through our many active volunteers, community partners and financial

supporters. To each of you, we express our gratitude!

Vision

A community where every student has access to all of the enriching opportunities school life offers.

Mission

We support DSBN students by engaging the community to provide needed funds and resources where

government funding is not available.

Through our donors we:

• provide support to students in financial need for basic necessities and extra-curricular activities

• provide annual student awards and bursaries

• support progressive programs and services in our schools that enrich students’ educational

experiences

• provide innovative community initiatives

• manage designated gifts in accordance with donor specifications

Values

Caring – A passion for equal opportunity is at the heart of our work

Purposeful – We are committed to making a difference in our community

Relationships – We act with honesty, respect and transparency

Your Donor Gift

Helps students like Caleb who lives on his own. The EFN provided funds for the purchase of safety shoes

he wears to his co-op placement.

Provides funds so students like Aiden and Kira are included in the hands-on learning experience that

field trips offer.

Provides annual student awards and bursaries to students like Sarah, who is attending Brock University

for the skills she needs to follow her dream of becoming a police officer.

Supports progressive programs and services in our schools like funding the ICAN Primary Self-Esteem

program at College Street Public School, promoting self-esteem and helping students believe in

themselves.

Funds innovative community initiatives like Prom Project Niagara where annually, students are outfitted

with free dresses, suits and accessories for their prom and graduation ceremonies.

Our donor directed gifts support students through bursaries, and programs that benefit entire schools.

Volunteer Spotlight

Beth Labrie has volunteered for 5 years with EFN’s Prom

Project Niagara.

For students, prom and grad are memorable milestone

events.

Beth explains why she gives her time and energy..

“We must be the examples in our own community,

to inspire our youth to become the

leaders, people taking up a cause, having a sense of

purpose and giving value to everyone. It only takes a day

and a helping hand to make a difference

to create a special moment of pride, a future with purpose

and a reason to say "Someone helped me once. What

can I do to help you?"

Swim to Survive

A grant from the Lifesaving Society provides funds for all DSBN grade 3 students to learn vital swimming

skills. We partner with local aquatic centres and transportation providers, giving our students the best

learning experience possible. Through all of our partners, this program is free for our students.

Scholarships, Bursaries and Endowment Funds

The Foundation ensures donor designated funds are administered in accordance with donor

specifications. DSBN schools and students benefit from:

• Carol Leppert Fund for Winger Street Public School

• Carrol Leppert Fund for Steele Street Public School

• Ed Mirynech Fund for Connaught School and a bursary awarded to a Connaught School

Graduate

Endowment funds held at the Niagara Community Foundation help with future student needs:

• Poverty and Emergency Relief Fund to fund student essential needs

• Education Foundation of Niagara Fund to fund program requirements

The Foundation grants a $200 scholarship to an eligible graduate from each of the DSBN secondary

schools.

We are so thankful for you! We are a high needs school and it is so great that we have organizations like yours to lean on when we have kids in need. This time of year is super stressful for so many of our kids and knowing that they have warm clothes relieves a part of that stress. We can't thank you enough!

For well over 50 years, Thorold Music has had a

commitment to support and encourage music

education in our community and in Niagara’s schools.

Being involved with EFN’s Make Change for

Children Campaign was a good fit.

Thorold Music provided $1500 in equipment and

services to Applewood Public School to congratulate

students for raising funds to help other students.

When asked to participate in Beat the Brainiacs

Trivia Night, Tanya Ace readily organized a team

and Thorold Music bought a table. It was another

way “to give back to our community.”

Those at Thorold Music “are passionate about the EFN

causes. We hope to encourage other Niagara based

businesses to continue supporting the youth of our community.”
