Podium Panic

For some people, the thought of giving a presentation is more frightening than falling off a cliff, financial difficulties, snakes and even death.

Page 5: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Dealing with Podium Panic

• Audiences are forgiving• Nervousness is usually invisible• Be yourself• Practice deep breathing/ visualization

techniques• Begin in your comfort zone

Mental block…..?

Page 18: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Take a break !• ? Every 7 minutes • Look at audience • The ‘ B’ key

Page 19: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Audience centric

Page 20: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Keep it interactive

MOVE …….

• Using remote presenter• Mix & mingle with them

Page 22: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Eye contact

Page 23: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Eye Contact

• Never let them out of your sight.• Looking them in the eye makes them feel

that they are influencing what you say.• Eye contact allows the presentation to

approximate conversation—the audience feels much more involved.

Page 24: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Rule of KISS !!!

•Mind the timeline.

Page 25: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Simple

Humor

Page 36: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

NEVER argue with a

member of the audience.

THE RULE

Page 37: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

“Better to keep your mouth shut and appear ignorant than open it and remove all doubt.”

-Mark Twain

Page 38: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

What do you think of the following slide?

Page 39: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Emk1 knockdown inhibits lumen formation in MDCK cells:

-RT-PCR: EMK1 is effectively knocked down in MDCK cells 24 hours after transfection with P-SUPER (control) or P-SUPER-siEMK1 plasmid; knockdown confirmed on the right with antibodies to EMK1.

- Collagen overlay assay: cells cultured 24 h on collagen I before being overlaid with additional collagen on the apical surface, analyzed 24 h later. Note the lack of lumen in EMK1-KO cultures.

- Ca switch: control or EMK1-KO cells were plated in low Ca medium 24 h upon transfection with pSUPER or pSUPER-KO. After 12 h, cultures were switched to normal medium for 24 h. Transmission EM of cells sectioned perpendicular to the substratum shows lack of microvilli in EMK1-KO cells.

Rule of six ….

• Six lines• Six words • Six bullets• Six minutes• Six columns / rows

Page 41: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Bullet points

Page 42: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Make It Big (How to Estimate)

• Look at it from 2 metres away

2 m

Page 43: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Readable …..

• Floor test

Page 44: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Visual Aids

should be on

the

speaker’s

left.

Power point add ins

• Thermometer • Yawn buster • Swiff point player

Page 46: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Powerpoint basics:3. Layout

If you try to cram too much into a slide, and place things too close to the sides, they can get cut off if you’re using a poor projector. In any case, the slide looks all cluttered and junky.

Page 47: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Powerpoint basics:4. Style

Try your best to include asimple image on every slide.

Page 48: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Fonts – good

• Use different size to show hierarchy

• the title font is 36-point

• the main point font is 28-point

• this font is 24-point

• Use a standard font like Arial• Use at least an 18-point font and Bold

Page 49: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Fonts - bad

• If you use a small font, your audience won’t be able to read what you have written

• CAPITALISE ONLY WHEN NECESSARY. IT IS DIFFICULT TO

READ AND LOOKS LIKE YOU ARE SHOUTING.

• Don’t use a complicated font

Page 50: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Wipe

•Right to left

Page 51: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Colour - good

• Use a font colour that contrasts sharply with the background

• Use colour to reinforce the logic of your structure• Use colour to emphasise a point

• But only use this occasionally

Page 52: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Colour - bad

• Don’t use non-contrasting font colours • Using colour for decoration is distracting and annoying• Using a different colour for each point is unnecessary

• Using a different colour for secondary points is also unnecessary

• Trying to be creative can also be bad

Page 53: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Background - good

• Use a simple background

• Use backgrounds that contrast with text/imagery

• Use the same background consistently throughout your presentation

Page 54: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Background – bad

• Avoid backgrounds that are distracting or

difficult to read from

• Always be consistent with the background

that you use

Page 55: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Graphs

• Use graphs rather than just charts and words• Data in graphs is easier to comprehend and

retain than raw data• Trends are easier to visualize in graph form

• Always title your graphs

• Use an effective and strong closing

• Use a conclusion slide

Page 61: Efffective presentation - Dr Sunil Kardekar

Conclusion
