Causes of Poor Acoustics•Hard Surfaces•Ceiling Height/Depth•Multiple Noise Sources

Page 3: Effects of Acoustics

Hard Surfaces• Hard surfaces on some of your furniture,

equipment and office area reflects acoustics back into your surroundings.

• The acoustics that reflect off the hard surfaces have a prolonged reverberation time, meaning the sound will be heard much longer.

• Acoustics won’t bounce off soft surfaces, as soft surfaces tend to have more chance of absorbing sound due to having smaller particles that create more openings for sound to pass.

Ceiling Height Depth• Depending if you have a high ceiling, poor acoustics exist when they have to travel further in the air due to the ceiling being quite high. • Sound gets trapped in the ‘dead space’ above your head, causing the sound to have reverberation times and makes it longer for the sound to become unheard.

Multiple Noise Sources • Noise sources can appear from anywhere in the

office. Whether it be another person’s conversation or the sound of the printer/photocopier in the background can always be a distracting factor. • Kjellberg believes ‘it is easier to habituate to

constant noise than variable noise’. Meaning that external factors noise effect our levels of productivity. • It is also human nature to be alert whenever we

hear something. Zhao believes that if noise is an overriding factor in the office environment this can lead to lead to poor employee satisfaction and lower morale.
