COMMON BEHAVIORAL CORRELATIONS OF OFFENDERS

RECIDIVISMOne key goal of the prison system in the United States is to rehabilitate its prisoners in the hopes that they will not continue to live a life of crime. Unfortunately, there are some individuals who will return to their former criminal life.

This is known as recidivism, which is the recurrence of criminal activity after an individual serves prison time for a prior crime. It can be a measurement of a person's return to crime, or of repeated arrest or conviction.

COMMON CAUSES OF RECIDIVISM

• Lack of job training

• Inability to obtain employment

• Inability to reintegrate into society after returning from prison

• Antisocial attitudes

• Association with other criminals

• Impulsiveness/Restlessness

• Lack of education

• Lack of support

• Substance abuse

HIGHER EDUCATION ACT

SECTION 1. Title. — This Act shall be known as the "Higher Education Act of 1994." chan robles virtual law library

OPEN ACCESS TO COMMUNITY COLLEGE

• Approximately 40% in state in federal prisons do not have high school credentials compared to 18% of the general population. • Few inmates have completed college course work. Not

surprisingly, many of these inmates were unemployed or underemployed before being incarcerated. • Lacking the skills necessary to function successfully in

society and on the job, many ex-offenders return to their past criminal behaviors. • Central New Mexico Community College is an open

admissions college.

THEIR FIRST IMPRESSIONS• My Academic Advisor kindly greeted me from the beginning OR my Academic

Advisor looked at me like I was less then making feel inferior from the beginning.

• My Academic Advisor listened to me attentively OR my Academic Advisor quickly went through a process only staring at his/her computer screen hardly making eye contact.

• My Academic Advisor took his/her time with me and answered questions I didn’t even know I had, OR I felt rushed by my Academic Advisor. I felt that he/she wasn’t interested in helping me.

• My Academic Advisor treated me with respect and recognized that we all make mistakes. He/she helped put me back on the right track, OR my Academic Advisor seemed judgmental of me based on his/her facial expression.
