    Four different types of lint cleaning were appliedto smooth-leaf & hairy-leaf cottonThirty six different combination of gin/mill

    cleaning for each varietyStudy suggests that lint cleaner should be usedonly as a step in cleaning process & mostcleaning should be done in mill

    This significantly improve quality of cotton &reduce short fibres

    Two distinctly different cottons were taken toinvestigate whether leaf hairiness will also affectcleaning

    For both cottons thirty six combination of gin/millcleaning were appliedConventional cleaning were also used to show theimprovements possible using conventional gin &mill processing equipment in innovative way

    Two samples were taken & named according toits properties as follows:

    S - Smooth leaf cotton

    H- hairy leaf cottonThis sample were from Stoneville, M ississippibecause of inherent difference in cleanability dueto hairiness of their leaves

    In hairy leaf cotton, leaf hairs tend to attach tocotton fibres & are difficult to remove duringprocessing

    Each level of mill cleaning is more aggressivethan the last , starting with 1 ,the least cleaning& ending with 9, most aggressive .6 is considered

    as standard mill cleaningM ill cleaning opens the cotton to small tuft size &extracts as much as possible before the cottongoes to cardProper cleaning protects the staple length, & theprincipal agent in this is the beaterThe three most commonly used are Buckley , theblade & the Kirschner

    The Buckley beater is considered the mostsuitable for longer staple, cleaner cotton .

    Blade beater, an exceptionally good cleaner,

    opens the cotton & removes motes, sand, bits of leaf & trashThe Kirschner beater separates the fibres intosmall tufts & removes some fine leaf & trash .

    CON CLUSI ON S

    M inimum gin cleaning yielded the best fibrequality and highest trash content in the bale .

    The best overall cleaning sequence for both

    varieties used only one lint cleaner at the gin .Smooth leaf cotton needed gentle cleaning, whilehairy leaf cotton needed much more aggressivecleaning .
