    CHAPTER 1: INTORDUCTION

    Introduction

The issues of European citi5enship have become a ma6or source of debate in both legal

and scientific studies& This debate originated from the controversy of 7hether citi5enship beyond

the boundary of the nation8states is possible or not& Scholars have focused on the limitations

associated 7ith European citi5enship to that of national citi5enship bemoaning the

underdeveloped character of European citi5enship9 7hereas on the other hand many scholars

have highlighted the constructive potential of the European citi5enship in the coming future&

Collective identity is vie7ed as an essential component of the democratic decision maing and

creation of a stable political system& This stance tends to utili5e the model of collective identity

and its characteristics 7ith the nation8states associated 7ith the E%#& The concept assumes that

the polities dra7 their collective identity from a common historical bacground as 7ell as

communication 7ith each other in an integrated environment&

    Background of the Study

The e;isting collective identities of the European citi5ens have gone through some ma6or

changes due to the process of globali5ation and European integration& n essential element of

these changes emerge from the changing nature of the nation state9 7hich in past fe7 years have

become a ma6or source of reference for the European citi5ens2& n essential component for

    Collective Identity 2

understanding the fluctuations inside the state includes the supranational integration9

globali5ation9 and multiculturalism& Thus9 political identity and individual loyalty of the

politicians have emerged as the 7ider collective identification9 and are no longer channelled in a

predominant manner by the nation state& Since the nature of the modern imagined communities

has changed9 due to the domination of the national9 and the +estphalian triad of territory9 there

has been a dynamic in the formation of identification of the European citi5ens& In various

approaches to7ards the European integration a consensus is found among the point of vie7 that

the nation state is losing its salience as the political organisation of human activities& The pro8

founding thing to notify here is that these processes are even more profound in the Eastern and

    Central Europe&

    Aims of the Study

The aim of this study is to understand the effect of collective identity of the European

integration& The research study 7ill deal 7ith the changing nature of the collective identity

formation in the enlarging Europe& In this study the research 7ill investigate the changes that

have occurred in established identities in the E% member states9 and 7ill provide theoretical

reflections on the ne7 processes associated 7ith the reconstruction of identity&

    Research Questions

The research uestions that 7ill be addressed in this study are:

    CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW

    Introduction

+e understand the concept of identity as neither a process nor a fi;ed structure& The

concept of identity is perceived as the dynamic construction of images in relation to the others&

The ongoing process concerned 7ith the renegotiations of the boundaries bet7een the old and

ne7 Europe has resulted in the emergence of the partners in negotiations and dialogues 7ith the

    ne7 significant others'&

Collective identity is a prereuisite for the future collective social practices along 7ith

the outcomes of various social practices9 accumulated 7ith the mars of the past e;periences(&

This is crucial to understand the relationship democratic order and collective identification&

Collective identities serve as the basis of the political and the social institutions and at the same

time they serve as the basis for the preservance of the established identities for democratic order&

Thus9 today E% is facing one of the most stimulating parado;es of identity and democracy of a

group9 7hich as the same time serves as the foundation and the goal itself,&

In this section of the study 7e 7ill address the follo7ing areas:

    CHAPTER 3: METHODLOG

    Research Design

    >or this study the researcher 7ill use ualitative research methodology& Fualitative research is

selected for this study in order to get in8depth understanding of the impact that collective

identities have had on the European integration& The ualitative research method 7ill allo7 the

author to investigate the 7hy and ho7 the political decision maing has affected the process of

    European integration&

    Data Collection

    >or this study the author 7ill use secondary data9 secondary data for the study 7ill be

collected from various libraries such as E3SC$9 and !roFuest& The ey7ords that 7ill be used

by the author for searching relevant information includes: European identity9 Europeani5ation9

    collective identities

scholars that have been previously been conducted on this topic& This 7ill enable the author to

measure the impact of collective identities on the European integration& It 7ill be assumed that

collective identities are formed prior to the attitudes to7ards the E%9 and the subseuently affect

    CHAPTER #: CONCLU"ION

ccording to the assumptions our research study 7ill demonstrate the fact that European

Sociali5ation and the subseuent change in identity is not a process& cuiring ne7 roles and

identifies inside the E% does not come at the e;pense of tradition and national identities&

    >urthermore9 the study is e;pected to demonstrate the concept that 7hen one unpacs the

concept of identity9 the choice of the individual does not play any role in this& This reali5ation

7ill allo7s understanding the emerging debate in a much broader theoretical literature bet7een
