My expert focus area:
Getting college students to make smarter late-night snack choices.
Monday, December 10, 12
more specifically,
who: college guys (in fraternities)
where: in frat houses with open, stocked fridges and pantries
when: while working late at night
Monday, December 10, 12
why(through observations+insights): because when asked, these guysactually want foods that are:1) healthy - they’re already pretty motivated to eat better (for appearance) and2) energizing - to help them stay up late
Monday, December 10, 12
However, motivation to eat healthy dips greatly late at night when we get tired.

why(through observations+insights):
We often choose convenience - quick and easy snacks (see: junk food)
“I just need something (anything) to keep me awake right now”
Monday, December 10, 12
why(through observations+insights): the problem isn’t that there aren’t healthy options, but that options are disorganized. It’s hard to immediately tell what’s a good choice when healthy foods are mixed in with fatty ones

another insight:
Many subscribe to this old saying that goes:
“Eating after eight turns to
weight.”Monday, December 10, 12
But the bottom line is:
Monday, December 10, 12
As long as you... eat healthy foods mind your portions stay active

three(ridiculously simple)solutions that we can implement right away
“crummy trials”

Dude throws away all high carb snacks
in the house
Dude watches video about obesity
Dude becomes Dining Associate
to shop for healthy house food
Dude prepares smoothies during
the day (anticipating night work)
Dude goes for a gym break instead of a snack break
Student becomes chef for the house to prepare snacks
Dude schedules only two snack breaks of
5 minutes for the night
Dude turns off power to the
coffeemaker’s outlet
Dude videotapes eating habits for self-evaluation
Dudes prepare snack packs
Freezer of high-sodium meals locks
after midnight
Dude puts sticky note reminders of
healthy alternatives above desk
Dude clears pantry each weekend
Replace all potato chips with sweet
potato/veggie chips
Dude moves out of dorm to one without open
kitchen
Dude requests prepared low-carb snacks from house
chef
Dude puts bowl of fruit and oatmeal
near desk
Dude keeps a daily log of
caloric intake
Dude grabs a bowl of fruit and goes to the
library to work instead

discussion among the guys
this organization allows guys to “think about my eating habits spatially, something I’ve never
done before”

2nd crummy trial:
-allows for easier decision-making by removing browsing/frustration
-placement of containers are organized by healthier snacks at most accessible middle shelf
“you could organize everything with nutrition facts facing outwards, but...people already know what’s good for them or not.”
“this doesn’t do that so it isn’t overtly such a guilt trip”

3rd crummy trial:
( ...it’s hidden inthis jar of trail mix)

nesting the unhealthy pantry snacks inside jars of healthier options
3rd crummy trial:
Monday, December 10, 12
Sounds ridiculous, but it worked...
Monday, December 10, 12
on one hand:
Those that found the candies were reaching for the trail mix to begin with. Even though it was a pleasant surprise, they felt compelled to finish that first before considering the candy. It was a small reward for making good choices.
Some people simply never found the hidden unhealthy candies.
on the other hand,

the psychology:
On BJ Fogg’s Behavior Model, we are decreasing ability just enough to stop an undesirable behavior (reaching for easily accessible candies).

the psychology:

more importanly:
This trial was pretty shocking/funny for the unassuming late-night snacker, which led to more conversation on health choices, as well as mutual observations on snacking (watching to see if others could spot the hidden snack).
Both outcomes are OK, seeing as awareness and conversation were important main goals.

CONCLUDING THOUGHTSON LATE-NIGHT SNACKING:Organization of your pantry and/or fridge is important for improving health.
Monday, December 10, 12
What few people realize is that they don’t have to cut out all food intake after a certain time at night.I know about this because it’s easier to encourage simple healthy replacements rather than discouraging eating altogether.
CONCLUDING THOUGHTSON LATE-NIGHT SNACKING:Organization of your pantry and/or fridge is important for improving health.
Monday, December 10, 12
Another thing few people realize is that bad snacking habits often result from disorganized access to snacks and food.I know about this because organizing the fridge and the pantry helped make people conscious of their choices and choose healthier options.

Monday, December 10, 12
Another thing few people realize is that setting up your own barriers to unhealthy snacks greatly decreases your likelihood of consuming them.I know about this because adding one more level of access (another container) to these snacks, and placing them on shelves away from eye level, decreased their consumption.

Don’t be afraid to make your trails fun/wacky!
I know about this because having semi-ridiculous user tests only helped to engage conversation/get people thinking about their good choice.
