Over 80% of marine accidents are due mainlyto human mistakes.
Marine engineer’s responsibility is to operate his/her ship safely
and economically. Safe operation largely depends on marine
engineer’s technical ability rather than physical perspective. It is
largely emphasized that marine engineer’s technical ability
should be improved to satisfy rapidly changing external environ-
ment that ships are becoming large, specialized, automated and
speedy.
But, regardless of this big effort, over 80% of marine accidents
are still caused by human mistakes. These marine accidents
incur serious human, physical and environmental damage and
even can be the cause of disputes between independent coun-
tries. Eventually, they will affect national and business economy.

[Picture 2] Effectiveness of simulator-based training
The necessity of simulation trainingfor marine engineers
Traditional lecture-based training in the marine engineering area
was not effective for the trainees to learn difficult technology and
relevant theories.
Therefore, it is required to develop an efficient leaning aid
system by attracting the trainee’s interest and motivation.
The first marine simulation was produced by the Marine
Research and Training Center in the Port Revel near Grenoble,
France in 1967. Two trainees went on board a model ship of 1/25
real one to directly operate it.
In 1975, U.S.A reproduced the perspective of object and clear
screen using large-sized screen and CGI(Computer Generated
Imagery) and the marine simulation has been developed into
current status.
A lecturer or trainee can directly operate a simulator in the train-
ing room to simulate various situations encountered during
actual operation. Through this simulation, the trainee can easily
learn difficult theory such as internal machine operation, power
transfer process, etc.
By providing various environments which cannot be obtained
from actual on-board training, the trainee can raise the ability to
respond emergent situation effectively.
Netherlands install a marine simulation in the Tershelling Mari-
time Academy to provide the trainees in all marine colleges with
free training. Japan is carrying out a comprehensive training
course that utilizes a simulation for the trainees of the trading
vessels college who completed two-month actual ship on-board
training.

The Necessity of Simulation Trainingfor Marine Engineers
As the above, the marine simulation is utilized to evaluate the
crew’s training and the safety of operation in over 100 organiza-
tions in about 40 countries. The world trend is that a marine
simulation is used to decide the marine engineer’s performance.

[Simulation Training Result of Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology]
It is very effective for unskilled trainees.
The marine engineering capability obtained by marine simulation was almost the same as the one by actual boarding.
A combined training of actual boarding and marine simulation provided great efficiency.
The training based on boarding experience helped to improve the ability related to ship operation and main-tenance.

What is Master Series?
The Master Series of Think Marine is an economic product that
reduces the price of hardware and improves the effectiveness of
training by combining Simulator (Machine) and Controller
(Software).
The hardware part of previous simulator is presented in the com-
puter with GUI environment, conceptually the same with actual
machine. Actual photograph, drawing and descript are appropri-
ately provided in the screen. The controller enabling various
types of physical operations includes software which makes the
user be able to learn without expensive simulator.
If a user have personal computer, the Master Series can be oper-
ated anywhere and anytime to learn by himself/herself and
obtain relevant knowledge.
The user can configure physical parameters in the simulation
and using these values, the Master Series produces the same
operation with that in actual machine visually under the GUI
environment by internally embedded engineering calculation
process. Therefore the system provides the means to identify
simulation status intuitively to maximize the effect of training.

Master Series - Pneumatic Master
The Pneumatic Master is a computer based training program
that simulates starting, stopping, and operating the main engine
of ship with SULZER DENIS-1DMF, MBNW70MC-C type and
operating the pneumatic control system accordingly.
A. Simulation Implementation- Based on pneumatic drawing of ship, it visualizes the same operation of main engine and pneumatic system with those in actual one and presents them dynamically. o The user can dynamically start, stop, move forward and backward the main engine in the screen. o The operation status of pneumatic system according to main engine control can be checked in the dynamic graphic screen in real time.
B. Implementation of operation at each control mode in the main engine- REMOTE control : Implemented operation of main engine and pneumatic system at remote mode- BACK UP control : Implemented operation of main engine and pneumatic system at back-up mode- LOCAL contro o Implemented operation of main engine and pneumatic system at speed set mode o Implemented operation of main engine and pneumatic system at emergency mode
C. Various simulations by program setting- Auto mode : Automatic progress by device control- Manual step mode : Progress by clicking each element by operation stage- Time delay mode : Progress to the next stage after speci fied time is passed.- The guide tip is provided during each simulation process.
D. Actual photo and technical information of main parts are provided.
