1. ESADE Entrepreneurship Institute: Background, Mission and Outlook

The ESADE Entrepreneurship Institute (EEI) aims to be a benchmark for entrepreneurship in Europe that is acclaimed worldwide. Our mission is based on: relevant research, hands-on training, direct involvement in social debate and support for enterprising projects - all with a view to fostering the development of society.

The history of the EEI dates back to 1967 when ESADE establishing a team of entrepreneurs and

professionals from the world of management with the role of tutoring promotion projects of final year

students of the Bachelor of Science. In 1984, Professor Montse Ollé offered for the first time the subject of

Creation and New Business Management at 5th course of licensure. And in 1997, ESADE founded the Center

for Entrepreneurship (CEI), led by Professor Eugenia Bieto, current Director General of ESADE. The CEI was

evolving, with a strong educational and social impact. Was implemented in all government programs the

subject of “Creating Business “, with the support of Professor Montse Ollé, competitions began Business

Plans, and launched the Springboard Technology supported by the Generalitat de Catalunya.

From 2000 onwards, the BAC focussed increasingly on research: a contribution to the programs and

support for entrepreneurs. In 2005 the GRIE (Research group in entrepreneurship) was set up with a dozen

researchers with working on different fields in the common area of retailing. Prof. Marcel Planellas, the

group’s head researcher spearheaded efforts and managed to have the research group acknowledged as

a “new” group by the government of Catalonia.

As time went by it became obvious that this officially “new” group already had considerable experience,

and just 3 years later, in 2008, it was upgraded to a “consolidated” research group.

That same year the decision was taken to merge the BAC and the GRIE, the more research-oriented activity,

to form the ESADE Entrepreneurship Institute (EEI).

Our basic outlook is based on those three cornerstones:

Knowledge creation We conduct research into the different realms of entrepreneurship and the family

firm, touching upon functional areas, entrepreneurs, globalisation, training in entrepreneurship, creativity

Page 7: EEI Annual report 2011-12

and innovation. Our lines of research are dynamic and change, to keep abreast of the major issues on the

frontier of entrepreneurship.

Hands-on training based on and fed by knowledge creation. Designed to pinpoint new opportunities and to

develop the skills necessary to create and develop new lines of business in new organisations and family

firms; to identify entrepreneurship; to foster creativity in companies; and to fund entrepreneurial projects.

Involvement in social debate We transfer this knowledge to society and companies by organising public

events for audiences involved in the business world, by taking part in conferences and disseminating

knowledge in the media and publications.

Our ambitious projects are intended to position ESADE as Europe’s foremost university in the field of

entrepreneurship, so we seek to optimise our resources and to ensure the interaction and involvement of

all those concerned.

2. An overview of 2011-12

The 2011-12 year was a very enterprising year very in keeping with our mission. The description of the

projects we have carried out would fill several pages, but they are mentioned in the rest of the report. In

the meantime we will highlight the three major ventures implemented in 2011-12:

• Master in Science in Innovation and Entrepreneurship

• EGarage

• Start-Up Spain

The Master in Innovation and Entrepreneurship (MIE) was taught successfully for the first time

in 2011-12: a state-recognised, one-year master focussed entirely on innovation and entrepreneurship.

A dream that finally came true for EEI staff under the leadership of Prof. Jordi Vinaixa. The group of

graduates is already working on the projects to be carried out in future years. Full details of this program

are given on page 20.

Since the 2010-11 year, the EEI team has been working on a meeting place where entrepreneurs,

teachers and students can create new start-ups. A multi-purpose space to help generate ideas and

facilitate creativity, debate and encounters. A “garage” à la Palo Alto for ESADE entrepreneurs. The

project was approved at the beginning of the 2011-12 year under the leadership of Prof. Luisa Alemany,

with technical assistance from Prof. Lotta Hassi, and the enthusiastic participation of MIE students,

following which the space was designed and its requirements specified right down to the last detail. Each

team of students prepared “prototype garages” and on March 1st 2012, the EGarage was inaugurated

at ESADECreapolis. See page 30 for everything that has happened since its “unofficial opening” in March

2012.

Finally, a series of conferences entitled “Start-up Spain” was begun in Madrid in conjunction with the

Rafael del Pino Foundation and chaired by Javier Santiso. The success of the three held last year has

encouraged us to carry on promoting this event which has, in just one year, been acknowledged as a

benchmark in the sector.

Page 11: EEI Annual report 2011-12

In short, 2011-12 was an enterprising year. The EEI year is already working hard on many more

activities for the year that has just got under way. We hope you find our report interesting reading.

3. 2011-2012 activities

Research is one of the EEI cornerstones. We work towards increasing the number of researchers, the quality

of publications and strengthening international networks through the most relevant academic conferences,

research seminars and visiting professors from the most acclaimed universities in entrepreneurship.

In January 2012, the researcher Magdalena Markowska joined the post-doc

research team. Magdalena obtained her PhD at Jönköping International Business

School, Sweden in 2011 and her research focuses on the role of identity and agency

in entrepreneurship. During her two years with EEI, Magdalena will work mainly in

research.

Lourdes Urriolagoitia PhD also joined our team in July 2012. Lourdes is an experienced

researcher in entrepreneurship, particularly in the area of social retailing, and will

be researching material for case studies. One aim our institute has set itself for

2012-13 is to create a collection of case studies covering the entire spectrum of

entrepreneurship in a variety of key industries such as internet, biotechnology, clean

energies and technology in general, many with the involvement of entrepreneurs or investors who are

former ESADE students. The case studies will be published and distributed by the European Case Clearing

House (ECCH).

The end products of EEI research, reflected in their publications and participation in academic

conferences and congresses, are listed in the Appendix: an indication of the work and knowledge

developed in recent years.

STEP PROJECT FOR FAMILY ENTERPRISING, directed by Prof. Alberto Gimeno. A project instigated in 2005

by Babson College (USA) and developed by six business schools around the globe: ESADE (Spain), HEC

(France), Jönköping International Business School (Sweden), Universita Bocconi (Italy), Universität St.

Gallen (Switzerland), Universität Witten/Herdecke (Germany), and Babson College (USA).

The aim of this long-term study is to investigate entrepreneurship in different generations in family firms:

their ability to grow and generate social and economic value and perpetuate their entrepreneurial legacy

for many generations.

At the first STEP South Africa Family Business Workshop, held in November 2011 at the University of the

Western Cape (UWC), Prof. Alberto Gimeno read the paper:

Gimeno, A. (2011) Culture and values for entrepreneurial activities. South African Family Business Meeting

(STEP). Johannesburg.

During the 2011 STEP Global Summit it was announced

that the successful candidate for hosting the 2013

STEP Global Summit was the ESADE Entrepreneurship

Institute.

SUCCESS FACTORS OF NEW ENTREPRENEURS

For the seventh year running, Prof. Jan Brinckmann of

EEI and Prof. Dietmar Grichnik of Universität St Gallen,

Switzerland, furthered their research into the success

factors of new companies. Their findings were published

in the acclaimed Journal of Business Venturing

ENTREPRENEURIAL EDUCATION As a result of the findings of the White Paper on Entrepreneurship in

Spain conducted by ESADE under the auspices of the Fundación Príncipe de Girona, a research project

was undertaken to investigate entrepreneurial education amongst children and young people. The

3.1.3. RESEARCH PROJECTS:

Page 19: EEI Annual report 2011-12

19ESADE Entrepreneurship Institute

project is directed by the professor and philosopher José Antonio Marina (Universidad De Padres), José

Manuel Pérez Díaz-Pericles (founder of Valnalón, Asturias) and Luisa Alemany (ESADE Entrepreneurship

Institute). The aim of the study is to “draft a proposal for an educational model incorporating the study of

entrepreneurship in primary and secondary school and vocational training which can be implemented in

all of Spain’s autonomous regions”.

The first phase of the project included a series of conferences on enterprising education in January

2012 which provided a meeting point for all the people, professors and public and private institutions

already working on the subject of entrepreneurship in Spain. The conferences were highly productive

and acted as a springboard for gathering material and sharing the best practices.

In late June, a report was submitted with recommendations on how to design and evaluate the programs.

The study will be published in 2012-13, probably in the first term.

MOMENTUM PROJECT

June and July 2012

This program was designed by ESADE’s Social Innovation Institute in conjunction with EEI, under the

auspices of BBVA.

When held for the second time, in 2011-12, this course was more condensed than the first year and

consisted of two phases. Phase 1, in June 2012, covered the subjects the teams needed to build the

foundations for preparing the strategic growth plan for their companies. For four days, ESADE professors

gave classes on growth strategies, social enterprise, leadership and social impact assessment.

Page 26: EEI Annual report 2011-12

26 ESADE Entrepreneurship Institute

Phase 2, taught in July, focussed on creativity, innovation, commercialisation, marketing and

communication.

The focal point of these classes was to analyse the world in which enterprise takes place. Considerable

time was dedicated to studying and discussing the case studies and working in groups on the best

strategies to enhance the results of each one.

TRAINING COURSE FOR TECHNOLOGY RECOVERY MANAGERS for FECYT (Science & Technology

Foundation of Spain, Ministry of Science and Innovation)

April to June 2012

April 2012 saw the start of the second Technology

Recovery Managers course for the FECYT.

Participants are trained to promote R+D+i projects and help build bridges between the academic and

business worlds. Program run in conjunction with TeaCegos and ISIS Enterprise (Oxford University).

The aims of this program are two-fold: 1) to train executives in technology transfer, a new career option

in science and technology in Spain; and 2) to capacitate researchers to embrace a business philosophy

and facilitate cooperation between universities, research centres and industry. The program is designed

for PhD holders hired by INNCORPORA – Torres Quevedo 2011 and graduates with at least 3 years’ work

experience in scientific research, technology development, R&D management, etc.

On December 21st 2011 the ESADEFORUM hosted the presentation of the findings of the White paper on

entrepreneurship in Spain, a study conducted by the ESADE Entrepreneurship Institute.

The participants were:

Antoni Esteve, presidente de la Fundació Príncep de Girona; Mònica Margarit, directora de la Fundació

Príncep de Girona; Eugènia Bieto, directora general de ESADE y Luisa Alemany, directora del ESADE

Entrepreneurship Institute.

START-UP-SPAIN

Start-Up Spain, created in the last quarter of 2011, consists of a series of get-togethers with entrepreneurs

and investors from Spain and elsewhere designed to encourage discussions about ideas to generate

more local and international entrepreneurs in Spain, and an efficient investment network. The intention

of this venture is to fast-track the transformation of the Spanish economic model into an innovative

economy.

The aims of the Start-Up Spain sessions held in Madrid under the auspices of the Rafael del Pino

Foundation and the Campus Party, were two-fold: to encourage political debate by using ideas; and to

have an impact on the future development of policies to promote entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurs,

technology companies and venture capital must be given priority if Spain is to emerge from the crisis.

Start-Up Spain began in November 2011 with the first Start-Up Spain 2011 talk. Directed and promoted

by Prof. Javier Santiso, it was attended by over 500 participants and became a Twitter trending topic.
