Astheinformationenvironmentrapidlychanges,librariesareputtingtheir

effortsinto collecting and preserving digitalcontents,aswellasproviding

variousservicesrelatedtotheircontentsbesidesthetraditionalmonographic

forms.Forinstance,college and university librarieshave started to build

institutionalrepositories,whereresearchinformationcanbecollecteddirectly

from researcherswithoutbeingintervenedbyproprietarypublishers,asshown

intheexampleoftheopenaccessmovement.Oneoftheconcernswithinsuch

an environmentisthatlittleauthority orcontrolexistsoverthemetadata

input,becausethedataareenteredbyresearchers-namely,enduserswho

havelittleknowledgeoflibrarysystemsortheformatofsuchmetadata.This

may causeinconsistency among themetadata,and asaresult,recalland

precision in information retrievalcould deteriorate due to the lack of

authoritativedata.

This research suggests an approach to controlling authors'names by

developingnameaccesspointcontrolsystem forDSpace,whichisopen-source

and widely-used institutionalrepositorysoftware.Withtheproposedsystem,

consistentmetadata can be maintained,and the quality ofdata can be

improved.Indevelopingnameaccesspointcontroldataforthesystem,the

followingaspectshavebeenimplemented:

1)Theprimarydatahavebeencreatedfrom theexistingauthorityrecords

ofthelibraries.MetadataAuthority Description Schema (MADS),which is

basedonXML,hasbeenutilizedastheformatoftheprimarydata.

2)Unliketheexistingauthoritydata,theprimarydatadonotuseany

Alltheaforementioned datawereimported to anew DSpacesystem,

NA_DSpace,forinstitutionalrepositories,andnameaccesspointcontroldata

wereusedformetadatainputandinformationretrievalwithintherepositories.

Whenthedepositor(e.g.,aresearcher)inputsanameintothesystem,the

system presentsalistofaccesspointstothecontroldataforbrowsingand

providesanautocompletionoftheinputsoastoensureaccuratedata.Along

withtheaccesspoints,thesystem alsopresentsinformationaboutfieldsof

activityandtitlesifnecessary,inordertodifferentiatepersonswiththesame

name.Furthermore,allthesefeaturesareutilizedinsearchingforinformation

from therepositories,sothatthepeformanceofinformationretrievalcanbe

improved.

Theresearchresultindicatesthatthesystem improvesinformationretrieval

performance.Itisalsoexpected thatthesystem canbeutilized overother

metadataprovidedbylibraries,inadditiontotheinstitutionalrepositories,in

ordertoprovidebetterqualityinformation.
