Research andinnovation

EeB.NMP.2010-1 New nanotechnology based high performance insulation systems for energy efficiency

• Buildings in Europe• 40% Energy Demand• 36% CO2 Emissions

• “Energy Performance” of an average European building is poor. The majority of energy in a building is spent to satisfy heating and cooling demands

Rationale

• Insulating materials keep the temperature constant in an enclosed space such as a house, either warmer or colder than the surroundings.

• According to ECOFYS the addition of thermal insulation to existing buildings in Europe could decrease current building energy costs and carbon dioxide emissions by some 42% or 350 million tonnes of CO2 emissions

• Nanotechnology offers high potential for enhanced insulation

Nanotechnology & Insulation Materials

Research andinnovation

Scientific & Technical goals of the TopicDevelopment of nanotechnology based insulation systems for enhanced thermal and improved mechanical properties while reducing overall costs.

Economic feasibility important• New construction• Renovation of existing installations

Other important considerations• The safety for the full product life cycle (production, use, disposal/recycling)• Economic performance of the proposed solutions should be demonstrated

by service-life costing analysis• Active participation of industrial partners encouraged• Demonstration activities, including pilot implementations in industrial

settings expected

EeB.NMP.2010-1 New nanotechnology based high performance insulation systems for energy efficiency

Nano-E2B-Cluster What technical cross-cutting issues among your projects should be taken into account to increase the overall impact?Related with the scientific and technical knowledge and products developed it could be foreseen possible different technologies and product combinations• Enhanced NIR-REFLEXION (Coolcoverings) • Enhanced thermal storage capacity (NanoPCM)• Enhanced insulation (Nanoinsulate, Hipin and Aerocoins)

Related with technical methodologies developed in each project it could be foreseen to address jointly those related with:• Nanosafety issues (Health and Construction processes)• Life cycle analysis (LCA) and cradle to cradle (C2C)• Technical common measurements, calculations and standardization processesE.g. Development of new standards for COOL materials as multifunctional insulation construction systems. Development of a common design procedure to assess whether cool covering is indicated as a replacement (or integration) of alternative insulation systems in terms of return of investment for the user and CO2 footprint

PPP Impact Workshop 1-2 April 2014 - Brussels

Research andinnovation

What non-technical cross-cutting issues among your projects should be taken into account to increase the overall impact?• Common dissemination activities can be crucially important, although each activity

will have to be launched after having defined the IPR policy for each project. Promote and participate as a cluster in workshops, conferences, industrial fairs .

• Joint Common Demonstration activities

• Market search and market activities

• Addressing politicians, legislation and end users

• To Increase social awareness of European environmental research policies

• To Increasing the technological level of European construction products, acting as research / technological barriers for third countries competitors

Nano-E2B-Cluster

PPP Impact Workshop 1-2 April 2014 - Brussels

Research andinnovation

How can cluster activities add value to your project?• Common framework of analysis and research approach to initiatives in the

same field.

• Multidisciplinary research capacities heading a common research framework/objectives backs the effort of significant European researchers and companies to approach E2B ROADMAP challenges.

• Common demonstration activities through the Nano-E2B-DEMO Park set up a common framework for testing, enriching the different validation approaches

• Cluster activities add value through networking amongst SMEs and research-type organisation which would not happen naturally. Through sharing information, SMEs may find additional solutions to enhanced their company’s product offerings.

• Disemination activities: collaborating to disseminate the other projects in events (1+1=3), workshop focused in insulation materials proposed by the Cluster, video, brochures…

EeB.NMP.2010-1 New nanotechnology based high performance insulation systems for energy efficiency

Nano-E2B-Cluster: Possible Synergies and benefits of clustering

PPP Impact Workshop 1-2 April 2014 - Brussels

Research andinnovation

How can cluster activities help exploitation of results after the projects end?• Gives a platform for sharing costs, for standardization work and as

dissemination via of the project results, widening its real market implementation opportunities.

• Cross-project commercial partnerships are highly probable since working together increase our link and reinforce our common objectives

• The results from project’s end could be used by other companies as a springboard to further development which leads to new and better products to be brought to the marketplace.

• Networking, dissemination of results by other partners involved in the Cluster

11 projects in the area of reduced embodied energy (area 2), smart windows (area 4) and indoor air quality (area 6) have started clustering activities by topic and they are very keen to participate to a bigger cluster, which will enhance the impact of their developments.

Common activities between the 25 projects Workshop: “Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology for Energy Efficiency in Buildings” in Athens-Greece, on the 8th of April 2014

Objectives: Establish communication channels and synergies among the participating projects, such as

in the form of common dissemination and proliferation activities. Increase the visibility of participating projects and related research achievements to

interested stakeholders and the general public. Identify common practices that could to be followed by participating projects. Work together on relevant limiting issues, such as standardization. Identify gaps in research and formulate the framework for promoting their solution.
