emotional energy
Interdisziplinre Tanz-Performance
Medienknstlern Micha Thies, Tobias Grewenig, Ralf Baecker

emotional energy
An interdisciplinary dance-performance
Energy flows through us, loaded or unloaded, flowing or
blocked. Energy is never neutral.
In "emotional energy" Silke Z. researches together with the
media artists Micha Thies, Tobias Grewenig, Ralf Baecker the
emotional energy, which releases the combination of people.
For with every step, every encounter we produce energy, which
occur in an interaction with the environment and develop a
life of its own that is beyond our control!
In this interaction of charging and discharging, attraction
and repulsion unfolds the dynamic dancing duet, meshed with
live, interactive projections. Virtual energy fields are
excited, emotional, physical states visible.
Dance and video found in "emotional energy" to a new and
unusual combination. The audience itself is involved by the
dissolution of the classical stage area in thisinterdisciplinary game.
The idea of "emotional energy" was created in TEMPS D'IMAGES
2009, a festival dedicated to the many connections between
dance and new media.

1. Inhalt
entwickeln...
The more you can let go of your control and give it over to a
kind of transparency in the body, a feeling of disappearance,
the more you will be able to grasp differentiated form and
differentiated dynamics. You try to divest your body of
movement, as opposed to thinking that you are producingmovement.
So it would not be like pushing forward into space and
invading the space - it would be like leaving your body in
space.

Concept
In the project emotional energy we like to research on the
energy that a movement can leave in space like an atmosphere
or like a feeling...
Is this the energy that will allow us to reach and touch the
audience in an emotional way?
By deconstructing a formal dance language which will serve
as a base we will try and texturelize and visualize the
energetic base of a movement which will be projected into the
space.
The projections will be created live. The visual media is
interactive. The dancers will enter a dialogue with the
projection and with the sound which will be also created live
and will be as well as the projection depending on the action
of the dancers.
The movements will leave traces (images) on the floor of the
stage and depending on the relation between the two dancers
these images will transform...
At any time these images can start to have their own
lives ...and function like another dancer in the space...
The more you can let go of your control and give it over to a
kind of transparency in the body, a feeling of disappearance,
the more you will be able to grasp differentiated form and
differentiated dynamics. You try to divest your body ofmovement, as opposed to thinking that you are producing
movement.
So it would not be like pushing forward into space and
invading the space - it would be like leaving your body in
space.

2. Hintergrund
vertiefen.
Background
During the temps dimage festival at tanzhaus nrw in january
2009 the artists were invited by tanzhaus to develop and
present a chantier about emotional energy. Regarding to the
exciting and creative results the artists decided to explore
and develop their work.
3. Duo Energie in Beziehungen
Verbale Informationsaustausch findet in Sekunden statt.
andere in ihnen hervorruft, auseinander.

Duo Energy in Relation
A meeting between two human beings is full of energy. It is a
non verbal energy that is responsible to exchange
information in split seconds. The physical body of the other
person and the signals it is sending will be perceived, taken
in and judged in a short amount of time.
We call it the first impression of somebody.
What does this impression do to the physical body of the
other?
Do we change our way of being?
Do we adjust to the information we are receiving? Can we stay
with our own self?
zurckgibt.
Dialogue within the artificial space
On an energetic level the performers begin the performance as
one body that is ready to function, to register and to take
action. Over a longer period of time there will be small
differences in the movements visible. These are very small
expressions within one movement and they define us as
individuals. As this individual human being we relate to one
another.
During the research phase the dancers will work on defining
-

9/40
the small individual expresions. Extracting emotions and
expressions of being emotional in order to start a dialogue
with each other.
The dialogue does not only happen amongst the dancers but they
will be additionally confronted with the fact of the observing
machine. the machine with its clear visual interpretations of
movement and form. This is the surrounding the dancers leave
traces in. There are physical laws in the system: with each
new movement the dancers will change the surrounding world and
this world also contains the information of every motion that
happened up to this point.
That means that the dialogue is expanding in an artificial
space: the set up stores a interpretation of the emotional
energy of the dance and at the same time plays it back to the
dancers..
5. Der Raum Set Up Das Publikum

The Room- Setup- The Audience
The audience enters a room and watches an area, which is
projected on the ground its a corridor. The seats for the
audience are located on the long sides of the corridor. Its a
little bit fresh and foggy in the room. The temperature
reflects the emotional coldness, which is also reflected in
the clinical setup.
The audience sits down and watches the performance from the
sides of the corridor. The outer edges of the projected area
define the border between performance and audience. The feet
of the audience dont touch the stage. Security.
During the performance, the projected area will grow, the
borders of space of the performance grow into the space of the
audience. The projections crawl under the chairs. At the end
of the performance the projections cover the whole room. Nowthe dancers perform not only in the corridor but also behind
or next to the audience.
The space, which at the beginning was the space of the
audience, is now located in the middle of the stage!
Right now the audience is part of the staging.
The areal eversion has taken place.

6. Technischer Aufbau

Technical Setup
Several projectors, which are installed on the ceiling,
produce a singular reflection on the ground with the side-
proportion 8:3. The projection marks the area where the
dancers are performing.
The beamers as continous projection area are equiped by a
laptop per VGA or DVI. The source of the visualisation is a
self-engineered Java-application on a laptop. The laptop is
connected with a special hardware-amplification, so that its
posible to actuate the beamers as a connected display.
The Java-Application on the laptop forms a physical,
tridimensional system. Its posible to control its conditions
and status per the influence of Midi. So you have the
possibility to be responsive during the performance to the
dancers and their dynamics.
Also in the middle of the room above the dancers, there is
located a beamer and a wide angle monitoring camera (with a
IR-filter in front of the lense to avoid interactions with theprojection on the ground). The signal of the camera is
digitised by the laptop, so that its posible to analyse a
tracking-algorithm.
The tracking operates as an independent application in
Max/MSP/Jitter and follows the position of the dancers. The
determined positions are transmitted to the application of
visualisation and affect two abstract objects, which obey
the physical situation of the 3D-world.

7. Artist Statements

Artist Statements
Im interested in the formalisation of human action by
observant systems.
It doesnt exist the correct presentation of the
interpretation of the action of the dancers. So we create the
opposite: a fictional, formalised interpretation, consisting
in abstract forms and movements. In consequence to the
feedback of the two dancers with the artificial environment
results an emergence. If we look at somebody, we do not look
only at this person but also at the person in the
environment.
(Micha Thies)
emotional energies are energies between human beings. In the
theatre im interested in reaching the audience emotionally. A
visual confrontation with the theme and a dialogue between the
medium dance and video, between the dancers among each other
and the whole performance and the audience seems to me a
comprehensive and exciting mix. A complex composition trying
to touch the audience in the theatre and get closer to them.

FEELINGS, SHARED'EMOTIONAL ENERGY' BY SILKE Z./ RESISTDANCE AT STOLLWERK
A broad strip of white dance floor lies stretches between therows of seats. The audience members look not only at the twodancers standing on the edges, positioned as far apart fromone another as possible, but also at the audience memberssitting opposite them. Each person in the room is a part ofthe staging from the very beginning. Though it is somethingthey will only really fully understand once they applaud atthe end of the piece. For now it's time to concentrate on thetwo men in light coloured clothing. Initially one has to payattention to even be able to detect their movements. Slowly, very slowly, the intensity and radius of their movementsincrease. The two approach each other diagonally, yet visiblyattempt to avoid seeing the other, turning their backsdeliberately. All the while each does exactly the same thingas the the other, mirroring every step and every gesture. Thechoreographer leads the two Portuguese dancers, AntonioCabrita and Manuel Silva, with a purism. The room staysglaring, the glaringness set by the light batteries at oneend, no music setting any mood. Yet regardless of how neutrala surrounding framework may be, or how formalised spacialpathways are, there is always a tension that emerges betweentwo people, an 'emotional energy'. Precisely at the pointwhere this energy unfurls in the dancers' leaps towards eachother, their rolling away from one another and repeatedattacks, choreographer Silke Z. cues a black out. And this iswhere two media artists, Tobias Grewing and Ralf Becker, comeinto play. The dancers again begin to approach and repel oneanother in the darkness. Yet this time the connection isvisible; a white line trembles like a tether on the dancers'ankles, sometimes slack and loose, some times tightened bytheir jolting movements. The beams of light multiply, encircling each of the dancers' space, weaving each into anet, an entanglement from which even the most explosiveconvulsions cannot free them. Interactive metallic sounds andprojections are added, enhancing the emotion of the movementwith precision. The audience can no longer escape from iteither. Before they know it, the audience is also caught inthe net of lights. The dancers cross over the boundaries ofthe dance floor and weave in and out of the audience, whichultimately finds itself standing on the dance stage.
'emotional energy' captivates with its stringency, thereduction and deliberation with it explores its subject. Alovely example of how showing less allows the audience to seemore. Christina Maria Purkert

Emotional energy: Silke Z. at TanzhausThomas Hag
Wisps of fog drift through studio 6 of the Tanzhaus; thetemperature is comfortably cool, befitting of the clinicalatmosphere that choreographer silke z. needs for her latestwork. Audience members sit on stools to the left and right ofthe stage area. Two dancers, Antonio Cabrita and Manuel Silva, appear, filling the space. A projector streams a barelyperceptible pattern on their bodies from above, they stand
across from one another in the cold light. They silentlycircle one another, drop to the ground only to wind up again, dance in unison and meet in combative lift and throwing posesuntil exhausted.
Geometric patternsUntil this point, the performance is almost purely dance; thenmedia artist Micha Thies gets involved. Geometric images aretransmitted from a laptop through the projector, filling thestage floor with pictures where they react to the dancers'movements. It may be a hectic line connecting the actors, but
may also be luminous dot grouping them, or trapezoids, imagesreminiscent of science fiction movies."Electricity comes from another planet," The VelvetUnderground sang, and the emotional energy created here seemstruly charged. Both dancers are caught inside the abstractpatters as though they are part of a cryptic, slightly diffusesystem.
Countless points of lightTowards the end, the piecewhich could really be described asmore of a studybecomes more playful. The patterns creep
beyond the defined stage area, Cabrita works his way throughthe rows of stools and draws the audience members into thestage area where they can experience firsthand how it feels tobe encompassed by countless points of light.
Applause resounded for this interdisciplinary project that wasoriginally developed from a short piece for the Temps d'imagesfestival.

Ample energy for everyone Silke Z. at Tanzhaus
BY STEPHANIE BECKERTwo dancers position themselves in the room. They turn awayfrom one another. With minute movements they begin their game.A shoulder turns upward, a head turns to the side.Concentrated energy works its way from the inside outwards.
In her new production "Emotional Energy"a collaboration withmedia artist Micha Thies, Tobias Grewenig and Ralf BaeckerCologne-based choreographer Silke Z. explores emotional energyand the traces that it leaves behind in space. The originalperformance was held at Tanzhaus NRW. The movements, initiallycalm and concentrated, escalate explosively throughout thepiece. The dancers (Antonio Cabrita and Manuel Silva) comeinto contact. Explore their relationship. Distance themselves.Seek closeness. Embrace each other. Jump onto one another andover one another.
The audience is just a breath away. Sitting on stools andbordering an intimate dance space. Sensing the energy that thedancers are emitting, almostbodily. Suddenly there is a lineon the floor connecting the dancers. A line that follows bothmen, changing in form, developing a life of its own, reactingto the dancers. Energy turned visible. "Emotional Energy" isan exceptionally exciting and very well-executed synergybetween dance and highly complicated media technology.Overwhelming applause.
