SELF CONFIDENCE MATTERS
Letter for Teachers
Hello,Halli, Hola, Dumela, Sawubona, Malo, Thobela, Shalom, Ciao, Salam Alaikum Kifek, Ti Kanis teachers of the world.
We all live in two worlds at the same time. The outer world of people and things and the inner world of our own thoughts and feelings. It is in this inner world where we find the most important part of who we are ... The time has now come to teach our children to understand their own thoughts and feelings ... And to EMPOWER you the TEACHER with the right tools to help your learners be the best they can be!
Welcome to the magical world of the Butterfly Kidz. This exciting easy to use educational programme has been specifically developed to expose children to key techniques of creating positive behaviour and attitudes; deepening positive self awareness and developing emotional intelligence through magical stories, worksheets, positive thought cards, abc cards and posters.
It is believed that if you give a man a fish to eat you will feed him for a day but if you teach him how to fish you feed him for a lifetime ... Educators now have this responsibility to teach learners how to think and feel good about themselves so that they can learn how to create positive life experiences.
It is not so much the subject matter that will mold learners into who they will become one day but rather their own thinking that will differentiate them from the "average" person into a unique whole individual. The focus should then be to build the child's self esteem by giving them "success experiences" through praise and positive reinforcement thus emphasizing their special qualities, rather than only concentrating on their weaknesses.
Learners need to be programmed with positive thoughts and happy feelings making them feel valuable and acknowledged to develop greater self confidence and awareness in their own ability. It is so very important to encourage each learner to become a whole and unique individual so that they grow up knowing how to contribute positively as a productive member of society. "We only have to give that which we are inside." Self love and self respect are the foundation of tolerance for others and it is only through developing positive self worth in children that will help them grow into adults with compassion and kindness too.
I hope you will enjoy teaching The Butterfly Kidz Tools for Life to your class as much as I have enjoyed developing it for you. It is my dream that by helping children unfold their full potential we can make the world beautiful for all!

BUTTERFLY KIDZ LEARNING AREA POLICY - POSITIVE
SELF-AWARENESS AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
DEFINITION
The concept of Butterfly Kidz Tools for Life is to develop positive self
awareness and emotional intelligence in learners by helping every little girl
and boy to understand their own thoughts and feelings. It guides and prepares
learners for life and its possibilities, with an understanding that we are all
different and special in our own unique way. The vision for this learning
area is the development of self-love and self-respect in the hearts and
minds of learners so that they grow with a foundation of understanding
that we cannot give that which we are not inside. This empowers learners
to have respect for themselves and others in a positive, productive and
loving way in a world where diversity is embraced and celebrated.

SELF CONFIDENCE MATTERS
Ice BreakersThis activity is useful at the beginning of the year to introduce the children to each other:
Allow them to walk around the room in rhythm to the sound of a tambourine, drum orclapping. When the music stops each child reaches out to the child nearest him or her. They shake hands and say, “Hello, my name is ………”
When the music starts again they all continue walking. This time, when the music stops, pairs nearest each other say hello with their eyes, by winking or blinking. Continuewalking again, and then use different body parts to say hello (e.g. nodding heads, waving hands).
The BUTTERFL
Y Kidz Song
Suggestion:The children can play self-made instruments and have a sing-and-play-along session.e.g. tins filled with seeds, glass jars with pebbles, pencils used as drum sticks on table, etc.
(To the tune of When the Saints Come Marching In)
If you believe
If you believe
If you believe in yourself
You can achieve anything you want to
If you believe in yourself
And so believe
And so believe
And you can be anything you want to
You’ve got to believe in yourself
And if you do
Your dreams come true
The Daydream Catcher catches children’sbad daydreams so that they are
free to make their gooddreams come true.

To make the Dream Mobile you will need:- 4 thin dowel sticks- strong cotton- butterflies, cut out, coloured in and
pasted on thin card.
Photostat the butterfly page so that each child receives a butterfly.Allow the children to write on the back of the butterfly a dream of what they wantto become one day. Each child hangs up their cut-out coloured-in butterfly.
Butterfly Kidz Name ChainLet each child write their name on a piece of paper cut out in the shape of a butterfly.Let them colour it in and make it as pretty as possible. (Use glitter if possible.) Thenstick the butterflies onto strips of paper that can be joined together in a chain. Leteach child join their name to the chain. Hang the chain across your classroom.
Draw outlines of butterflies on A4 paper andmake enough photocopies for each child tohave one to write their name on.
Glue each butterflyonto a strip of paper.
Glue each strip to form a linkin the name chain.
Children can make these at school and bake them at home in the oven ifthere is no oven at school.
Salt dough shapesSalt dough is fun to mix and mould. Once baked it canbe decorated to create all sorts of shapes and figures.
Salt dough shapes make ideal presents and they can beused as small ornaments or festive decorations. Mouldsmall animals with your fingers.
Or, cut out shapes with a knife or shapedcutters, which you can get at mostsupermarkets.
Make letters of the alphabet to spell out your name.
Glue a brooch pin on the back of flat shapes to makejewellery or badges.
Butterfly Kidz cardholder. (Children cankeep this on their deskwith a Butterfly Kidz thoughtof the day card in it)
Roll a small piece of dough into a ball.Place a card into the middle of the ball, tomake a slit for the card to fit into. allow forshrinkage during baking. make a butterflyor a flower to stick on before baking.
Once you have shaped and cookedyour salt dough (see next page) youcan decorate it with brightly colouredpaints.
Poster paints work well, but don’twater them down. When the paint isdry you must cover the surface withclear varnish (nail varnish will do) topreserve it.
Ropes look nice when they are leftplain. When the varnish is dry wrapesome coloured ribbons around themfor an unusual effect.

LETIN BOARD
Each child should bring a photograph of him/herself to school, which can be cut Up.Use the photograph as the face of the butterfly. Also write each child’s name on thebutterfly. Use coloured pens and glitter to colour in.Remember: glitter always adds a touch of magic.
Every morning allow children to choose a positive thought card which is their thought forthe day. Select one to put on the “Thought for the Day Board.” Each child has a turn fortheir card to go up on the board.
Alternatively, let each child have a turn to call out what is on theircard softly, then louder, and finally very loudly.
Thought for the Day BoardColour in with coloured pens and glitter to make it more magical
Thought for the Day
Let’s talk about whatmakes us happy…Discuss how different people feel happy about different things. Ask each child what makesthem happy. Create an awareness of how giving makes us feel good inside.
Plant a Tree of happiness in a pot. Place the tree in the classroom. (A dead dry branch withoutany leaves can be painted a bright colour.)
Allow each child to make a beautiful butterfly, using cut-outs, with a message of happinesswritten on it - something that makes them feel happy inside - to hang on the tree.
Make the tree as magical as possible with fairy lights (if available), glitter, tinfoil, etc. Use theplay dough recipe (See pages 10 and 11) to make more decorations. You could put a star atthe top that says “Tree of happiness and Good Deeds”.
At the end of the year each child either makes a gift or brings a “little something” wrapped asa gift. these are placed under the tree and each child gets one of these Gifts of Happiness.(Children can choose who they want to make, or bring, a gift for.)

Time somebodytold you
The teacher can read this to an individual childor to the whole class to help build positive
self-awareness.
Time somebody told you (insert person’s name)That you’re lovely, good and real.
That your beauty can make hearts stand still. It’s time somebody told you (name) that your love
is total and so complete. That your mind is quick and full of wit,
and that your loving is just too good to quit.
Time somebody told you (name)How much they want, love and need you.
How much your spirit helped set them free,How your eyes shine full of white light,How good it feels just to hold you tight.
It’s time somebody told you (name).
BODY AWARENESSThe Twister
According to educators instructions, learners assume different body positions. For example:
a. hands and feet touch ground
b. knee touches elbow
c. feet on top of hands
d. 1. on hands and knees, put one leg in the air2. now lift one hand, so one knee and one hand touch the floor3. grab foot in the air with hand in the air
e. roll into a small ball
f. lie on back and hold feet in the air with your hands
g. lying on back bend knees into chest with arms out to the sides
h. touch knees with your head
i. make yourself as wide as you can
j. make yourself as small as you can
Educator should use different body parts in each new lesson.
Learners choose any two positions and do in a sequence. Repeat twice.
Learners can eventually choose up to five different positions.
Twisting to music develops rhythm as well as coordination.
In pairs learners mirror each other – this twisting exercise means using oppositearms, legs and direction to your partner. Twist to music.
In pairs, learners match each other – this twisting exercise means using the samearms, legs and direction as your partner. Twist to music.
Educator should demonstrate, mirroring and matching in different lessons so as notto confuse learners.
Educator can also allow learners to make up their own movements as they developbody awareness.
INTRODUCING A JOURNAL IN GRADE 2At the beginning of the year the educator gives the learner open-ended sentencesuntil they are ready to write their own sentences.
For example: I enjoy going to ………I love to eat ………I have lots of …………I am proud of myself when ………I believe ………
The Butterfly Kidz positive thought cards are excellent to use as open-endedsentences.
For example: I can achieve ………I am special ………The more I practice ………The more I learn ………
I enjoy going to swim
in the sea.
I am unique because
in all the world there
is no other person
like me.
DO WE REALLY KNOW WHAT OTHERS THINK?
LEARNERS SIT IN A CIRCLE
Educator chooses a learner to think a thought and express it on his/her face. Theclass should guess if he/she is happy or sad. then learners try and see if they canguess what he/she is thinking. Each learner has a chance.
Discuss:
1. Do we ever really know what someone else is thinking?2. If we are not happy, can we make others happy?3. Can we give to others that which we don’t feel inside?4. Can we be kind to someone else if we are not kind to ourselves?5. When someone is nasty to others, do you think they feel good about
themselves?

My body has “feelings” tooAnd just like my brain
It can tell me what to do!
G is for giveIt makes us feel goodLike flowers, sunshineAnd rain in the woods

In order to show loveGive a hug
A hug has magical powersAnd it’s so easy to do
A hug is a silent messageThat whispers I love you
J is for jealousyA silly way to be
For everyone has talentsJust like you and me
Kindness makes us feel good insideIt fills our heart with love
It paints rainbows in the skyAnd colours the world with love
Always love and honour yourselfFor you are meant to be
A unique individualThat no one else could be
Mistakes are life’s teachersTo show us along the way
They hold our handHelp us understandRight from wrong
And happy from sad
No is for “NO”A very important word
For everyone has the right to beAnd you have the right to disagree
So don’t go againstYour good sense to know
Make a stand and just say “NO!”

What a lonely place this worldWould be
Without you and me!
There is great powerInside of youSo why not
Use this powerTo uplift others too?
Questions are thereFor you to ask
Helping you find the answersAlong life’s path
R is for robotThat is a machine
It responds to ordersAnd simply stays clean
But that is not howWe were meant to beFor we have a brain
That sets us free
Sorry is a little wordThat says a lot
A thousand wordsOr maybe more
Would take the timeTo ever say more!
Think happy thoughtsAnd you will see
How you change the wayYou feel and be
U is for understandIt helps us to see
We all haveStrengths and weaknesses
And that’s howIt is meant to be!
Value yourselfAnd know this to be true
That not evenThe most beautiful flowerCould mean more than you
The spoken wordHas enormous power
To hurtEven the smallest flower
So thinkBefore you speak
And chooseYour words with care
To make the worldA happier place
With loving everywhere!
X is for kissA peck on the cheek
A way we sayThank you, I love you
And peace
Yes, everything is importantOn mother earth
And to realise thisYou must have
