Centennial Park 4th Annual Craft and Vendor Fair The school held its 4th annual craft and vendor fair with the support of its community partners. The event was yet again a great success offering baked goods, a hot-dog lunch, homemade crafts, hair accessories, wooden creations, Avon, Tupperware and much more. Learning how to be Team Players Mme. Daoust’s class works hard on becoming great team players while having fun! The class had to build a tower with spaghetti, string, tape and place a marshmallow on the top. The tallest tower standing was declared the winner. The key to success in this exercise was teamwork! Students developed their communication, teamwork and idea sharing skills. The

class did a great job in sharing their struggles and finding solutions while working with Miss Ali our school board’s Spiritual Animator. Howard S. Billings High School Home Economics students opened the "Billings Bistro" for the school’s Open House on October 5th. They made all the food from scratch and served it to visitors during the evening, while only charging a nominal fee to cover their costs. Homemade Chicken noodle soup, apple pie and pastries made from scratch had everyone’s taste buds delighted. Apples were donated by Leahy's Orchards from Franklin. Students also raffled off a delicious cake donated by Obsession Bakery (Chateauguay), whose owner is also a Billings graduate. The bistro activity is also done for Parent/Teacher interview evenings, as students decorate, set up the tables and chairs, do all the cooking and serving and collection of money.

Avid readers of all ages were excited to visit our Scholastic Book Fair in the cafeteria. It was an opportunity to add to their own personal collections as well as ideas for great Christmas gifts. Our International students were proud to present `a taste of home` inviting visitors to try some of their local recipes while entertaining guests musically with a Chinese instrument called the Pipa. The evening ended with a sneak preview of this year`s performing arts show, “The Lion King” which have many waiting in anticipation for the big event. Valleyfield CLC – news and notes Gault Institute BOKS has begun! BOKS has started and many students are letting their “feat perform a feat”! Students from the older grades are taking turns being the daily trainers, allowing them to practice leadership skills, teamwork and project planning. Active kids = Active Minds Learning from a Distance (October 20th) Mrs. Brisson’s Grade 5 class participated in their first videoconference of the year. The class visited the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas via our VC system. Books, Books and more Books! Librairie le Bouquin D’Occasion in Chateauguay helped our Grade 2 and 3 classes fill their classroom library by giving our school 300 books! When the community and the school work together in partnership, it is the students who benefit from the results. Our Grade 2 and 3 classes can now dive into a vast variety of stories in their classrooms. Snack Art The first snack art activity took place this month at lunch hour. Students learned about the health and nutritional benefits of certain fruits and vegetables, made a ‘craft’ out of their food, and then got to eat it. Sticking to the Halloween spirit we made pumpkins out of clementines and celery and ghosts out of bananas. A big thank you to Jardins Nitro for supplying us with our fresh and healthy food. Halloween This year, instead of individual costumes, the entire school participated in a Harry Potter / Witches and Wizards theme day. The staff wore cloaks, principal Mr. Brindle dressed up as Dumbledore, and the students were separated into the four Hogwarts houses; Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Gryfindor or Slytherin. The Centre Partage donated enough material for each student to have his or her assigned group’s coloured scarf. The day was filled with pumpkin painting, Halloween crafts, Harry potter Bingo and games such as Quidditch and letter tossing the gym. NFSB Leaders amongst us The students of the NFSB Student Coalition met for the first time this year on October 21st. Student Coalition is a group of students from every NFSB School that meets 5 times a year to discuss ways of making their school better. There were

47 students and 12 teacher advisors present for the first meeting. Grades 5 and 6 students from the 10 elementary schools, 13 C.V.R students and 14 H.S.B students in grades 7-11 make up this Student Coalition group. The day was filled with activities, team building and students hard at work on an initiative or goal they want to achieve at their school this year. Time was given for the students and teachers to learn what their role as a member of Student Coalition will be, as well as how they will communicate with the members of their school. The next Student Coalition meeting is in November. Stay tuned to hear more about the amazing ideas this leadership group has for the 2016-2017 The Community Learning Concepts (CLC) approach is the creation and promotion of partnerships which provide a range of services and activities, during and after the school day, to help meet the needs of our learners, their families and the wider community. The aim is to support the holistic development of our students, families and communities.

CONTINUING EDUCATION NEWS

CVCEC

During October, there were a lot of wonderful things happening at CVCEC. It was definitely an

action packed month.

CVCEC kicked off the month by attending a two-day session with Dr.

Reggie Melrose and the rest of the Continuing Education gang. Reggie

presented a brain changing toolkit that will help our students and

ourselves to self-regulate, self-manage, build patience and find peace.

Everyone received a copy of her book, The 60 seconds fix, and it is being

now used in classrooms, by the teachers and some have shared the

practice with family members and friends!

On Oct. 12, an open house evening for the Our House project was organized with the objective

to share with the community what is going on, to encourage people to volunteer on-site when

the time comes, and to have an application table where individuals who met the criteria could

sign up. Anne Bergeron from Habitat conducted an information session for the new applicants.

Thank you to Kim Wilson who organized the event and to commissioner, John Ryan, who

helped to welcome the visitors.

During the Open House, the Huntingdon 4H club presented

a cheque in the amount of $500 to CVCEC. This money

came from two fundraisers—one was held at August Social

Ped Day and the other was a “Zucchini Race” held in the

community.

In addition, Nelleke Nieuwenhof, a grade 6 student from Ormstown

Elementary School, presented a cheque to CVCEC in the amount of

$465 which was collected at her recent birthday party. Nelleke asked

her friends to donate money to the Our House project instead of

bringing her birthday gifts.

A huge thank you goes out to these young ladies who have been very generous. Their

contributions to the project are well appreciated.

Student of the Month

CVCEC celebrated their first student of the month—Megan Kaye-Hinves. Following is what her

teachers had to say: Megan is a second year Health Assistant and Nursing student who has

done well on stage and extremely well in the classroom. She is a serious, focused, hard working,

organized student who shows tremendous compassion to her patients. Megan maintains her

composure and has a professional attitude in unpredictable situations.

Facebook Live!

CVCEC has pioneered the way with social media’s Facebook

Live! On Monday, Oct. 24, 2016, Kim Wilson and Chuck Halliday

had a live discussion about the “Our House” project and the

criteria for families who are interested in applying. In less than

24 hours it has had over 1600 views and 30 shares!!! It looks like

we have found a new way to reach our clientele!

Carpentry News

The carpentry team hosted a group of grade 10 students

from CVR’s Target Your Future program. They were able to

see the “Our House” project in action and are looking

forward to seeing it in the spring when it has been delivered

to its home on Isabelle Street. The CVR students were also provided information on what the

required pre-requisites are and how to be successful in the program; and, more importantly,

what job options are available to the students when they graduate.

Education Internationale

On Oct. 27, Education Internationale hosted a

provincial gala for all the international projects

that were nominated for awards. It was a very

exciting evening for the CVCEC teachers because

they were announced as the winners for their

Dominican project and runners up for their

volunteer teacher experience in Bangladesh.

Congratulations to the health team! We are proud of your accomplishments and all that you

do for your students!

Soccer Tournament and Cross Country

Run

CVCEC participated in the AEAA (Adult

Education Athletics Association) soccer

tournament that took place in

Kahnawake. They did a great job

representing CVCEC with a record of 2

wins and 2 losses. Both losses were by

only one goal!

Halloween Fun

On Monday, students and teachers dressed up for Halloween and were given goodie bags for

their efforts. There were some really great costumes! Thanks to the office staff that organized,

decorated, and prepared them the bags!

Our House Update:

It has definitely been exciting around the Centre. La Presse did a great article on the project,

which included interviews from students and John Hodges as well as some photos.

A week ago, the high winds took the roof off the module that is sitting outside. Needless to say

the initial reaction was one of shock but then the carpentry teachers met as a team and within

an hour they had a solution and by the end of the day they had the roof covered and protected

from the elements.

Both the plumbing and the electricity programs from LBPSB will be sending a team of teachers

and students during the week of Nov. 7 to work on the project.

Oct. 31, the carpentry teachers volunteered to work on site for the installation of the

slab. Mike Reynolds, from Habitat, was there to oversee the installation.

Yesterday, Nov.1, the concrete was poured! Many thanks to Demix for donating the concrete

For more detailed information on the progress of the house visit John Hodge’s blog at

NOVA

There was plenty of physical activity at NOVA in the month of October!

Soccer Tournament and Cross Country Run

The second Adult Education Athletics Association Soccer Tournament and Cross Country Run

was hosted by First Nations Regional Adult Education Centre on October 20th, 2016, at the

Kahnawake Sports Complex. Adult learners from around the province participated for in this

spirited and competitive fun activity. Our ever-involved Assistant Centre Director, Dave

Reddick, was with our students throughout the day. The event was a great success.

Physical Education at NOVA

NOVA started a Physical Education class this fall for our Adult Learners. In the past, our

students were encouraged to participate in intramural activities. This new course gives our

students an opportunity to earn credits towards their high school diploma and help them stay

in shape. For more details please go to: http://nfsb.me/phys-ed-at-nova/

Halloween Activities

On October 31, Nova hosted their Annual Halloween costume contest and added a pumpkin

carving contest to the activities as well. Normand Touchette prepared and hosted the event

with great success. Our new W.O.R.K. program students (Working towards Occupational and

Readiness Knowledge) helped decorate the room and students from the Student Advisory

Committee were involved as well. For some of our International students, this was a new

experience. They had never carved pumpkins before!

New Teacher

A few more great stories were also proposed to the public on www.nfsb.me, one of them being

about our new teacher Nadine Thomson, who teaches in our Interior Decorating department.

http://nfsb.me/my-teaching-journey-at-no/

All of our daytime, evening and weekend courses are in full swing!

HAECC

Horticulture and Landscaping students join up for a day

Huntingdon's Horticulture DEP and Ormstown's Landscaping students joined together for a

great day of field trips targeting Fall Maintenance and Lawns. The morning started with a tour

of Cramer's Tree production nursery outside of Les Cedres. From rows of potted shrubs, to

seeing a 36 inch tree ball dug out of the Earth and wrapped in burlap, to being greeted at the

garden centre by an alumni student, it was, as usual, a great experience. The afternoon was

spent at a welcoming family sod production business: Groupe Richer, Les Coteaux. This was a

great opportunity to see class theory in an innovative and real-life situation.

Halloween fun at HAECC

Halloween was celebrated by a pumpkin carving contest as well as having a costume

competition. Lunch was provided by our staff for everyone at HAECC. The staff dressed up as

Waldo this year which was more amusing and less scary than usual. Our Sunshine class created

spooky stations in our gymnasium for all of our students to enjoy.

See video: http://nfsb.me/halloween-hoopla-haecc/

HAECC Soccer team and Runners

HAECC participated in the 2nd annual Adult Education Athletics Association soccer tournament

on Thursday October 20th in Kahnawake. Twelve students from Huntingdon joined in on the

day of friendly competition against other Adult & Vocational Centres from across Quebec.

HAECC played a total of four games coming out with one big win over Western Quebec! A new

addition to this year’s tournament was a cross country race. Over 30 athletes lined up to race

against one another, HAECC had two runners competing who placed in 5th and 17th. The day

was full of lots of fun and laughs even with the rain! Big shout out to the organisers for planning

such a fantastic tournament, can’t wait for the next one!
