workshop for nurses working in Gauteng Medico-legal services on the management
of sexual assault victims.

18th- 19th November 2010: Invitation by the Mpumalanga Government to facilitate
two workshops for South African College Principals and Academics (CPAS) in nursing
curriculum development and monitoring and evaluation, hosted by the Mpumalanga
College of Nursing.
2008 -2012: Served as a Research Reference Member for the Research on the State
of Nursing (Reson) – Transforming nursing practice, policy and leadership in South
Africa. Wits School of Public Health.
2007: Invitation by the Western Cape Department of Health (Maternal, Women and
Child Health cluster) to develop training programme and develop sexual assault
forensic nursing service for the management of sexual assault victims. To-date at
least 30 nurses have been trained and are running nurse –led sexual assault forensic
nursing services to manage the victims of sexual violence in the province.

Nursing Short Course for the training of Sexual Assault Forensic Nurses, in
collaboration with Department of Clinical Forensic Medicine. At least 30 professional
nurses have been trained in Western Cape and are running nurse-led sexual assault
forensic nursing services throughout the province. This service is recognized by the
Provincial Department of Health. The short course training lead to the invitation by
University of Pretoria (December, 2012) to offer the workshops to their postgraduate
nursing students who are working in medico-legal services throughout the Gauteng
Province

SELF INITIATED RESEARCH
2008 to date: Self –initiated Research: Clinical Competencies for Forensic Nurses.
This has resulted in 2 conference papers and 1 conference poster presentation. At
least 2 journal articles are prepared for submission before the end of 2013. The
project resulted in the development short course training and development of the
first nurse led sexual assault forensic nursing services in the Western Cape.
2013: Sexual Violence in the university residences: The proposal has been presented
to the College of Wardens, University of Cape Town. An amount of R45 000 has
been received from the Vice Chancellor’s Safety and Violence Initiative towards this
research. Awaiting ethical approval.
1999-2000: Evaluation of home-based care training programme for community
health workers for hospice in South Africa. The project resulted in 1 publication and
conference presentation.
