Val Harrison

During the more than 20 years that I’ve worked at

Guelph Museums, I’ve never had a day when there wasn’t something interesting, fun, or inspiring to do. I still get a thrill from seeing our visitors have those “aha” moments, when they really connect with an artifact, activity, or exhibition. I learned the art of storytelling and love of history from my grandmother, who told me colourful tales about my family’s past when I was a child, and I’ve never lost that appetite for a good story. I like to think that’s one of the things we do best at the museum: bring Guelph’s stories to life in innovative, thought-provoking and creative ways!

Ken Irvine

I’m lucky — my job allows me to combine my interest

in local history with my love of teaching. What could be better? I have a Bachelor of Art in Canadian History and a Bachelor of Science in Education. I’ve lived in Guelph most of my life, so I take special pride in presenting our local history to the public. When I’m not at work, my two daughters keep me pretty busy, and I still find time to volunteer for the Guelph Historical Society and at the Fergus Scottish Festival (I’ve even been known to don a kilt from time to time).

Lisette Weber

During childhood vacations, I first experienced the

roar of cannons at historic forts and glimpsed into the past at heritage homes. Now my passion for history is my career. With an undergraduate degree in History from the University of Waterloo and a postgraduate certificate in Culture and Heritage Site Management from Centennial College, I have worked in educational programming at three museums. My favourite experience is seeing someone get excited learning about the past.

Shir Dror

I am a student at the University of Guelph in the

Public Management undergraduate program. As a Guelph newcomer, working in the museum is an opportunity for me to share my passion for civic engagement, as well as become involved in the local community. Whether I am at school or in the museum, I continuously discover new and interesting things that I love to share with the community.

Micheal Matchett

The best thing about working for Guelph

Museums is the questions. Every day I get to help visitors find the answers they seek and, quite often, investigate questions they didn’t even think about until walking through our doors. I grew up in Guelph, and after finishing my Bachelor of History and Bachelor of Education programs, I taught History and English in the United Kingdom. Following this rewarding experience, I returned to Canada and joined Guelph Museums. As an educator, I love how our excellent collection of artifacts provides our visitors with a hands-on learning experience that is sometimes lacking or just not possible in the traditional classroom environment.

Anna Patterson

I have been passionate about museums since I was

a child — dragging my parents to every museum, historic site, and fort I could while on family vacations. I now have a BA in History and Theatre Studies from the University of Guelph and a post-graduate diploma in Museum Management and Curatorship so that I can help share the history and stories that have always thrilled me. If I get to dress up and get into character sometimes, that’s a bonus!
