Dear Delegates, Advisors, and arents,

It is my pleasure to welcome all of you to Educational Model United Nations 2019!

My name is imran Tandon, and I am proud to say that I have the honor of serving as the ecretary-General for this incredible conference. I, along with the rest of the EDUMUN 2019 ecretariat, am excited for you to join us on a journey of debate, diplomacy, and development at our fourth annual Educational Model United Nations.

EDUMUN is a truly unique and unforgettable experience. In the past four years, the conference has helped introduce and prepare hundreds of delegates for the enticing world of Model United Nations. It can be intimidating to take on an entirely new activity with little context or understanding, which is why EDUMUN was created. Our goal is to provide a useful and universal education of the ins-and-outs of Model United Nations and thus not only induct new delegates, but help them build their skills and grow their confidence in their abilities.

This year, we are excited to announce that we are introducing a new seminar track for Middle chool tudents, featuring the first ever Basics of MUN’ lesson. We hope to tailor our lessons to each age group so they can learn all the necessary skills at a pace and level that caters to them. Additionally, we have added another committee to our program. EDUMUN Committees this year will also focus on providing more than just a riveting day of debate; they will aim to provide feedback to delegates so that they can learn and grow even while actively participating.

EDUMUN is built on the core principles of curiosity, exploration, and courage; we strive to ignite a hunger for knowledge in our delegates, encourage them to explore every option and consider every solution, and motivate them to stand up and take their first step into diplomacy.

as the keynote speaker.Manka Dhingra is a enior Deputy rosecuting Attorney with the ing County rosecuting Attorney’s Office. As Chair of the Therapeutic Alternative Unit, Manka helped develop and oversee the Regional Mental Health, eterans Court and a Diversion program. Outside the courtroom, she is a community leader and anti-domestic violence advocate on the Eastside.

Manka was elected in November 2017 to serve in the state enate by constituents of the th Legislative District. Her priorities are to address the deficits in education funding, mental health, and violence prevention, and to protect the rights of women. rior to being elected, Manka was a co-founder of Chaya, an organization that assists outh Asian survivors of domestic violence and led the organization’s work to end systemic violence through education and prevention. he also serves on the board of the National Alliance on Mental Illness Eastside.

Manka has worked with ing County law enforcement agencies, Harborview Hospital, mental health professionals, and our courts to improve criminal justice outcomes for individuals with mental illness seeking to close the revolving door of jail, homelessness, and crime. he has engaged the tate Department of ocial and Human ervices, the Washington Association of

rosecuting Attorneys, legislators, and the Governor’s office build consensus and make real strides in reforming and improving our criminal justice system. he worked to ensure the wellbeing of individuals remained the core tenant in any reform. As a mental health and crisis intervention expert, she has also been an instructor at the Washington tate Criminal ustice Training Commission for the 0-hour Crisis Intervention Training for law enforcement officers to reduce the risk of tragedy and improve the response to people in crisis.

Basics of MUN 101 provides new delegates with a full introduction to Model UN and equips them with everything they need to know to be prepared and successful. It takes them through what MUN is, how it’s organized, how to register for conferences, and basic etiquette. It also introduces them to the basics of speech and debate and resolution writing, ensuring their success at future MUN conferences and endeavors.

The Rules of rocedure 102 eminar will teach delegates the fundamentals of Model UN, so that they can confidently walk into committee, being one step ahead of many other delegates. This seminar will cover the flow of debate, key terms, motion options, and different voting types. After this seminar, delegates will be confident and prepared to tackle humanitarian crises while navigating the formal procedures of committee.

The Research 103 seminar teaches some of the crucial and most vital aspects of succeeding in MUN. This seminar will go over how to create a cohesive position paper, how to form a useful research binder, and how to find research that is both reliable and helpful. It ensures that delegates are very well prepared for future MUN conferences.

Rules of rocedure (RO ) 201 is a high school seminar for novice delegates to learn about the flow of debate in Model UN committees. Understanding flow of debate is crucial, as it facilitates committee sessions and assists delegates in formulating and negotiating toward a completed resolution for an issue. By the end of the seminar, delegates will understand each step of RO , from moderated caucuses to motions, and be able to practice their knowledge and skills through a mock debate.

This seminar is geared toward getting you well on your way to preparing for a successful conference and introduces you to what many think is one of the most daunting tasks in MUN: committee research and preparation. In Model United Nations, you, as a delegate, will represent a country, person, or entity, and it is your job to accurately convey and enforce the stance of your delegation during committee. In order to do so, extensive and accurate research and preparation must go into the topic(s) of debate beforehand. Much of this research culminates into a “position paper”, which is, in essence, a written document explaining the background, stance and possible resolutions of your delegation. In this seminar, not only will you receive information on how to write a position paper, but you will also receive a rundown on how to effectively research for a committee, set up a research binder, and general research tips so that you’re as prepared as can be.

Resolutions

Resolution Writing 203 is focused around a committee’s final product. It will cover all the different aspects of a resolution, such as their functions and purposes, as well as the process of incorporating specific, comprehensive solutions that effectively address the committee’s topics. These skills address Model UN’s most essential portion, and are vital to being able to succeed at conferences.

UNODCThis committee is meant to serve as an opportunity to build delegates’ Model UN skills in the arena of debate, diplomacy, and writing. The principal committee is the perfect setting for those looking to gain more practice in a committee setting to kick off the year prior to competing in larger conferences. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime was founded in 1997 with the purpose of providing a platform

for debating and combating pressing global issues such as organized crime, drugtrafficking, crime prevention, drug abuse, terrorism, and criminal justice reform. It utilizes three major pillars to accomplish this goal: cooperation between nations, solutions-oriented research, and the implementation of treaties, rules, and laws that address these issues in the most efficient manner.

CELAC

Founded in 2011 as the successor to the Rio Group, el Comunidad de Estados Latinoamericanos y Caribeños (CELAC) serves to link 33 Latin American states. It works to promote regional stability in the Western Hemisphere through increased integration and dialogue between member nations and other intergovernmental bodies. While discussing a wide range of issues, CELAC chiefly focuses on nuclear disarmament, the environment, social development, and finance. The primary goal of CELAC is to preserve the strength and power of Latin American and Caribbean states in an increasingly modern world.

HCC

The Historical Crisis Committee (HCC) is a specialized crisis committee in which delegates travel back in time to a significant event in history and change its course. It is subject to fast-paced developments and high-level debate, this requires delegates to take more drastic measures and brainstorm more specific and unique solutions than they usually would in other committees. Thus, more experienced delegates are encouraged to participate. Delegates in HCC will also have to operate within different rules of procedure than standard committees by writing directives rather than resolutions. As the crisis develops, will delegates be able to handle the high stakes of assassination, betrayal, and sabotage that will arise?
