The Master of Science Programme in Educational Sciences,Educational Effectiveness
and Instructional design, is an English language version of a highly regarded Dutchmasters programme, adapted for international students. It was estalished in response to
the increasing interest in the educational e!pertise availale at the "niversity of
#roningen , evident y the high demand for international educational consultancies andresearch pro$ects led y our academics and staff.
Through comining the strong %merican empirical tradition with the more European
&ualitative and normative discussion aout education in a social and historical conte!t,
the Master in Educational Sciences teaches students to analyse education from a systemspoint of view. This results in attention for the conte!t, input, process and outcomes of
education. 'entral in this view is attention for ways to improve education and issues
related to the &uality, efficiency and effectiveness of education.
The programme is interdisciplinary with the core curriculum choices offered within the
(aculty of )ehavioural and Social Sciences. Depending upon student interest and thesis
topics, co*operation with other faculties regarding topics such as history of Europeaneducation, wor+place education, information technology, research a nalysis statistical
techni&ues or the economics of education is possile.

The last phase of the programme is the research component, where the student is re&uired
to write a Masters thesis, supervised y a memer of the academic staff within the(aculty of )ehavioural and Social Sciences. It is e!pected that students will have some
idea of a possile thesis topic, even if it is not yet sufficiently specific, efore they eginthe programme and certainly during the specialiation phase. )ecause of the comparativeand international nature of the programme, ideally theses will e researched in the
