Consider allyour optionsSO, you’re 16 years of

age, or approachingthat milestone, andyou’ve reached thefirst stage in your life

when you find yourself at amajor crossroads and have tothink, which way next?

But even with your GCSEresults some way off, it’s nottoo early to look at youroptions for sixth formeducation.

Your time at sixth form isa major stepping-stonebetween the compulsoryperiod of study expected ofchildren and young adults inthe UK and the wider worldof work and higher educationawaiting them in the future.

During your sixth formeducation you can study Alevels or AS levels, whilesome colleges will give youthe option to choose work-related qualificationsinstead, such as vocationalcourses working towards theQualifications and CreditFramework. Others may offerqualifications in Key Skills,

which are essential skillsthat employers are on thelookout for.

The idea of these courses isto either help you into highereducation or into a job whenyou leave sixth form.

You can study towardsthese qualifications at a sixthform college, a school sixthform, a further educationcollege or a specialist college.

While many people chooseto continue their education atthe school where they tooktheir GCSEs, it is a good ideato keep your options openand consider what otherschools and colleges canoffer. After all, you mightfind a nearby college offers awealth of subjects you didn’trealise were open to you.

Sixth form sizes varyconsiderably and tend tooffer quite different facilitiesand course options.

Make sure you thinkthoroughly about what typeof course you want to do,what subjects you might needto take for your future study

or career path, and whetheryour chosen school or collegecan meet these requirements.

If you do want to follow aquite specific path you mayfind that a specialist college, such as an art college or adance and drama school, might be a better option foryou.

Always visit a school orcollege before you decide toattend. Many schools andcolleges hold open days toallow prospective studentsthe chance to look aroundand meet the staff. Take intoaccount how far it is fromyour home and how easy itwill be to travel there. Otherthings to consider include: doyou like the teaching staff, are the class sizes too large, are the courses suitable foryou, and are the generalamenities good?

Take your time, weigh upthe options, ask advice fromteachers and parents, andyou’ll find you can make thedecision on which directionto take next with confidence. There are plenty of study options open to sixth-formers
