POLICE CHIEF
Candidates for this position must possess:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Police Science, Criminal Justice Administration, or a related field;
• Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in police or security work;
• POST Basic certificate and ability to meet standards for super-visory and management positions as specified by POST;
• Appropriate CA Driver’s License; and
• Valid certificates in First Aid and CPR within 60 days from date of hire.
Candidates must be able to periodically qualify with a firearm at a specified police or sheriff ’s shooting range and work night, overtime, and/or irregular hours. A master’s degree, experience with juveniles, and a Chemical Agents certificate are desirable.
THE COMPENSATIONThe salary for the Chief of Police is Range 59: $103,417.00 to $125,704.00. Placement within the range is dependent upon qualifications. The Stockton Unified School District also offers an attractive benefits package, including:
Retirement – PERS 3% @50 for classic members and 2.7%@ 57 for new members. Classic members pay the entire employee portion of 9%, and new members pay member portion of 12.25%.
Medical Insurance – CalPERS medical plans for applicable level for employee and eligible dependents. The employee pays a portion of available medical plans including dental and vision.
Vacation Leave – 24 days per year.
Sick Leave – Accrual of 12 days per year.
Holidays – 15 days per year.

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Any combination of education, training and experience equivalent to:
Completion of the twelfth (12) grade, supplemented by the completion of a approved basic police academy that would lead to a basic POST certifi cate, to have been completed within the past three (3) years. Preferably one (1) year experience with a California law enforcement agency as either a student service offi cer, community service offi cer, or police offi cer.
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATESPossession of a valid California driver license.Certifi cates of completion for:Mace, Baton, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation / First Aid, and from a Basic POST-approved Police Academy are required and must be submitted with application.

MISSIONThe Mission of the Stockton Unified School District Police Department is to provide a safe

THE COMMUNITYThe Stockton Unified School District (SUSD) educates students from the Stockton area in San Joaquin County. The area has significant agricultural history, hosts the annual Asparagus festival and is the gateway to the Delta, a vast network of waterways extending over a 1000 miles. The city of Stockton has a population of nearly 300,000 culturally diverse residents. Many families have made Stockton their home with lineage spanning multiple generations which many SUSD students continue to remain in the area to raise their families and attend college locally. Stockton is home to several higher education institutions including, the University of the Pacific, Cal State Stanislaus-Stockton, San Joaquin Delta College, and Humphrey’s College.
THE DISTRICTStockton Unified School District has a student population of over 38,000, with more than 3500 staff in 50 schools within a 55 square mile area. SUSD boasts an excellent college preparatory program, ranked sports teams as well as a large variety of extracurricular opportunities for youth and it’s students have some of the highest academic scores in the region.
THE POLICE DEPARTMENTThe SUSD Police Department is one of a handful of specialized K-12 school police agencies in California. Sworn personnel have peace officer powers of arrest pursuant to Education Code 38000 and as defined in Penal Code section 830.32. The Department is certified by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training since 1989.
The Department operates year round, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Presently there are 24 sworn peace officer positions including the Chief of Police, a Captain, 3 Sergeants, 18 police officers and a professional civilian staff of 8.

• Respond and handle calls for police service on school campuses, district property and bus transportation
• Enforce traffic and parking regulations on and near school campuses, at the beginning and end of the school day and special events.

• Investigate non-injury traffic collisions involving district vehicles
• Maintain crowd control during sporting events and other large gatherings
• Maintain a high visibility on foot, bicycle and/or in a patrol car
• Conduct investigations, collect evidence including photographs and other items to support the judicial process
• Exhibit concern and interest for people when handling calls for service, be respectful, professional and courteous
• Conduct pedestrian stops and field interviews
