EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Brazil has one of the highest literacy rates (90%) among the developing
countries — with an enrollment ratio of approximately 98% for primary
education, and approximately 51% for higher education. The country
caters to approximately 29% of its population across various levels of
education, and spends approximately 4% of its total government
expenditure on education.
Approximately two–third of Brazil’s education sector is dominated by the
general school education, followed by higher education and preschool
education. The sector has benefitted from free and compulsory basic
education at public schools. However many students are now opting for
private schools — which teach as per international curricula.
The country is witnessing an increase in number of private players,
especially in higher education, which are catering to growing number of
youth. These players are collaborating among themselves, raising
financing, and investing in various levels across the sector.
Brazil’s education sector is expected to grow at a compound annual
growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 4.1%, till 2018. The growth will be
driven by various factors, such as increased government and private
spending on education, growth in number of private institutions in urban
areas, and increased use of technology.

REPORT SAMPLE
EDUCATION SYSTEM IN BRAZIL
Education in Brazil is governed by the Ministry of Education, along with
the Council of Higher Education that supervises the postsecondary higher
education in the country.
The National Education Guidelines and Framework Law (Lei de Diretrizes
e Bases da Educação), approved in 1996, segregated education in Brazil
into two levels — basic education (comprising of preschool, primary,
lower secondary and upper secondary education) and higher education.
Preschool education in Brazil, also known as Educação Infantil, starts
when a child is three years old, and is admitted to Nursery. Children
between the age group 4–5 attend Kindergarten. Preschool education in
Brazil is entirely optional.
The basic school education in Brazil starts with the Fundamental
Education or Ensino Fundamental. The fundamental education is divided
into primary and lower secondary education and caters to children in the
age group 6–14. The education is state–sponsored and compulsory for
all.

Fundamental education is followed by the upper secondary education,
also known as Ensino Medio, which caters to children in the age group
15–17. The upper secondary education is also state–sponsored, though
not compulsory.
Higher education, also known as Ensino Superior, is imparted at state–
sponsored public universities, as well as other private universities.
Admission to a public university is done through entrance exams, also
known as vestibular, which students take to get admission for their
preferred course of study.
The vocational education overlaps both the levels, starting from
secondary education, to technical colleges. In the upper secondary
education, the vocational and technical education comprises of 3–4
grades of one year each. After completing the vocational education at
upper secondary level, the students can enroll for postsecondary
technical courses, and do internship with the industry.
