TRANSCRIPT
Let our diverse education programs
bring out your creative side with an
afternoon workshop, enlightening
discussion, or serious studio time.
We provide access to state-of-the-art
facilities and a diverse and talented mix
of teaching artists. These classes — for
adults who have never touched clay, for
skilled artisans, or for families looking
for a weekend adventure — introduce
dozens of interesting topics and serve
a variety of commitment levels: from
one day to 10 weeks and from hands-on
instruction to gallery presentations.
Adult students enjoy open access to
our studios from 9 am – 9 pm, 5 days
each week (and from 9 am – midnight
on Thursdays), and additional hours on
weekends.
Check out page 20 for more information
about our ART@HAND Programs.
Classes marked in this section with an @
are easily accessible and designed
for older adults.
INTRODUCTORY
Want to learn the basics of making clay
art? Try one of these introductory classes
that focus on construction and glazing
techniques. These classes have fewer
students, ensuring plenty of student
to teacher contact time, and they are
shorter, making them ideal if you have
little or no experience with clay and want
to test your interest. Get your hands
wet during five weeks of instruction. We
recommend that students take this class
two or more times (within one quarter,
or over consecutive quarters) to build
their skills and prepare for beginner-level
classes. Wear old clothes, and bring an
old towel and a beginner’s set of pottery
tools to the first class. Registration
includes one bag of clay (25 pounds), all
glazing materials, firing, and open studio
access. @

appropriate for wood firing. Northern
Clay Center is excited to continue its
partnership with JD Jorgenson to fire his
kiln in St. Joseph, Minnesota, about 90
minutes northwest of Minneapolis. Stu-
dents will meet four times for instruction
at NCC, where they will enjoy studio
access; later, they will meet for five days
to load and fire the kiln to temperatures
between cone 6 and cone 10. Designed
for intermediate and advanced hand-
builders and wheel-throwers.

Throwing Smarter (Multi-Level) @
We all love working with clay, but does
it have to be that much work on your
body and your brain? NO! Learn tricks
and techniques such as choosing and
preparing clay, and improving your
posture and position at the wheel, all of
which will save time and increase your
longevity at the wheel. Improve your
control and mastery of centering, throw-
ing, and finishing pieces from teacups to
chargers. Beginners to intermediate and
advanced levels will benefit from and
have fun in this course.

ing inspiration from spring flowers and
new growth. Use paper stencils, sgraf-
fito, mishima, majolica, or high-fire stains
with images of flowers. Take advantage
of instruction in drawing from obser-
vation of live plants. Finish the class by
focusing on the elements of vase forms
(the foot, body, neck, and rim) and
mix and match the parts until you have
forms begging for decoration. Previous
experience with clay is required. Hand-
builders and throwers are welcome.

on the firing process during three firing
dates. Students may choose which
firings to participate in according to their
own schedules. Designed primarily for
those who are at intermediate to
advanced levels, or those wishing to gain
experience with firing kilns. Previous
soda experience is not required. Throw-

Raku: Out of the ashesAre you in the mood to play with
fire? With Wisconsin potter and Raku
enthusiast Mark Lusardi as your guide,
discover the ancient Japanese process
of Raku firing, developed in 16th century
Japan for the Japanese tea ceremony.
This fascinating firing process provides
an opportunity to watch the glazes
transform from raw materials into the
molten state. Participants will enjoy a
fiery weekend of discussion, demon-
strations, glazing, and of course, a
hands-on firing! Perfect for beginners to
advanced students. Participants will be
provided with a wide variety of glazes
and tools to finish their Raku pieces,
and are encouraged to participate in all
aspects of the firing process.
EDUCaTION14 — Northern Clay Center
Choose to attend just the Saturday
session, which will include a slide show
and discussion, Raku kiln-building best
practices, glaze application, and a fir-
ing demonstration. Or, sign up for the
weekend event, exploring the process
more deeply, and have the opportunity
to glaze and fire your own clay wares.
Those participating in the full weekend
workshop must bring with them a mini-
mum of eight bisqued pieces and three
bisqued 8”x8” tiles. Bring a potluck dish
to pass for lunch on both days.
Mark Lusardi holds a BA in fine arts and
has extensive training in glaze theory
and Raku firing from both the University
of Minnesota – Twin Cities and Haystack
Mountain School of Crafts in Maine. He
has been conducting Raku and glaze
workshops throughout western Wiscon-
sin and eastern Minnesota for several
years. Currently, Lusardi is a clay techni-
cian and glaze designer at Continental
Clay Company. His own ceramic work is
both wheel-thrown and handbuilt, Raku
fired, and inspired by Aboriginal beliefs
and nature.

ments, and basic troubleshooting. The
workshop is led by NCC’s studio techni-
cians, who fire multiple kilns each month.
This workshop does not authorize NCC
students to fire our kilns independently,
but is helpful for educators and anyone
hoping to become an NCC studio artist.
