2013 Highlights

Activities for 518 International Museum Day: Sleepless Museum, Let’s Plan a Miro Exhibition

This event was held in response to the theme of International Museum Day in 2013, Museums (Memory + Creativity) = Social Change, and the exhibition Joan Miro:Women, Birds, Stars, held in June at the museum. It was aimed at delivering an innovative, hands-on museum experience. The objective was to offer an opportunity for the audience to access the development process of exhibitions at the museum, to create a closer relationship between the museum and the general public, and to enable the audience to become engaged in the museum’s growth. The event started at 7:00 pm on 18th May and ended at 7:00 am the next day, and activities were divided into four stages: 1. Hands-on activities designed to encourage children to work on different materials, such as drawings, ceramics and collages, and to imitate the artistic elements and style demonstrated in Miro’s masterpieces. 2. A midnight exploration of the botanic garden next door to the museum, under the guidance of museum staff. 3. A night-time treasure hunt at the museum, which the children had to find the 24 objects displayed permanently in the museum and pre-selected by the staff for the event. After the objects were discovered, the participants had to share their views on their cultural meaning and their experience in discovering them. 4. Dreaming of Miro: children and their parents were invited to sleep overnight in the second floor exhibition room in order to experience a special museum night. A total of 46 children and parents took part. Under the instruction of the museum staff and art teachers, children and parents alike recognized their overnight experience in the Museum as both innovative and extraordinary.
