Educational Expectations
• Supply laptops or tablets (1:1), or BYOD, or mix of both
• Record and upload lessons
• Obtain access to content outside classroom
• Everything just works
• Teach digital literacy, not IT Support
What teachers and students need to succeed
25 students login and connect
to Wi-Fi in 2 minutes during attendance
25 students can all stream videos
at once to iPads
Collaboration through technology
e.g., wireless screen sharing via Apple TV
or CMS
Outcome: Effective teachers, engaged students

Interrupted Learning
Interrupted learning occurs when technology gets in the way, or fails to support, your innovative goals for technology integration
Unmet expectations due to BYOD or 1:1
The Ultimate Aim of Modern Learning
“Trying to connect…” “Scale how?” “Class video failure!”
Uninterrupted learning, to me, is: no matter where a student is or a
teacher is, they have the tools they need to learn, without having to
go somewhere else to get them, or to wait and do it at another time.

Best PracticesFlip Your Wi-Fi Network
COVERAGE Classrooms, auditorium, hallways, stairs, library, cafeteria, offices,
nurse station, outdoor picnic area.
CAPACITY 1 AP/classroom to start, multiradio access points, 802.11ac ready,
avoid interference - 3 to 5 devices per student.
SCALABILITY Add capacity where needed, high capacity controllers centrally
managed, virtualized WLAN and managed Bonjour services.
FLEXIBILITY Needs evolve. Allow physical controller, virtual controller, or private
cloud. Locally or centrally manage, cloud or MSP.
MOBILITY Continuous coverage with zero-handoff roaming for low latency
applications, like voice and video.
ONBOARDING Guest management, 1:1 and BYOD device provisioning so a class can
login in <2 minutes during attendance.
FAIR ACCESS Equal airtime for b/g devices and .11n or .11ac devices, so exam-taking
students can have equal network access.
Be vigilant to detect and classify interference sources such as surveillance cameras,
neighboring Wi-Fi, Mi-Fi hotspots, and rogue access points

Wow, has my teaching changed!“ ”
Learning ProgressLook How Far We’ve Come
• Teacher Centered
• Teach all content
• Lots of teacher prep– Hard to differentiate
– Time intensive gathering of resources
– Patchwork type of diagnosis and
remediation
Six Years Ago
Outcome:
Mediocre test scores
• Student Centered
• Quick reviews of content
• Easy to differentiate
• Huge amount of resources
• Less direct instruction
• More computer program
management
• Pinpoint diagnosis and remediation
Now
Outcomes:
Better test scores,
Better student engagement

In my students’ words…“ ”
I pay more attention. “ ”
I appreciate getting to
figure it out by myself. “
”
I love that we have
choices on what
quizzes we want to do.
I like having multiple
tries. I try until
I understand.
“
”
I like how we get
to show what we
know and we get
to do things on
our own.
“
”
I can see what
I need to learn
so I can get a
better grade.
It makes my
learning go up.
“
”
It grades us instantly
and it helps me learn
because of the hints.
We actually get
involved and learn.
“
”
I learn at my own pace.“ ”
I’m excited to go to
math. It isn’t boring. “
