DIRECTOR’SREPORT
IbecamedirectoroftheEducationCentreinFebruary2010.Priortothis,ProfessorSandraCarrhadactedasdirectorforover2years,duringwhichtimetheCentresawrapiddevelopmentofitsacademicoutputsintermsofresearchandsupervisionofhigherdegreestudents.ShortlyafterItookthereins,ahailstormruinedourofficesinNBlock,necessitatingmovesofstafftoRBlock,PopulationHealthandGeneralPractice.Oneyearlater,wemovedintogetheragaininrefurbishedofficesat10StirlingHighway.Althoughthemovesandseparationweredisruptiveintermsofcollegiality,communicationandstaffmoral,veryfewdaysofbusinesscontinuitywerelost,thanksmostlytotheexcellentadministrativestaffandFacultyITstaff,whoallworkedaboveandbeyondthecallofdutytomakethetransitionsasefficientaspossible.

Asubstantialproportionofourworkloadinearly2010wasdealingwiththeAustralianMedicalCouncilAccreditationvisit,aswellastheusualcommitteesupportroles,WebCTsupport,andteachingofthegrowingnumberofHealthProfessionalEducationstudents.AnumberofstaffmembershavecompletedorarecontinuingtheirPhDstudies,andthereisanincreasingimperativeamongtheEducationCentreacademicstafftoincreasetheirresearchportfolios.TheEdCentreExpoHeldinAugustdisplayedmanyofouracademicinterestsandexpertisetoawiderFacultyandUniversityaudience.Thiswasfollowedbyastrategic
planningworkshopwhichassistedallthestaffintermsofdefiningtheCentre’sroles,responsibilitiesandongoingdevelopment.

AnumberofnewstaffmemberswerewelcomedtotheteamincludingProfessorDavidKandiah(ProfessorofMedicalCurriculumDevelopment)andMissMelinaIelati(MedicalCurriculumDevelopmentAdministrativeOfficer).MsAstridDevineistheactingProjectOfficereLearningreplacingMsFionaLeecefromhermaternityleave.
Morerecently,theEducationCentrehasdevelopedsomespecificperformanceindicatorswhichwillactasabarometerofperformanceforthenearfutureinallthekeyaspectsofourfunction:education,research,professionalservice,andsupport.IexpectthattheEducationCentreteamwillexceedthestandardsinitiallyset,andtheindicatorswillbecloselymonitoredandreviewedthereafter.Ibelievethattheteamwillcontinuetobuildonitsimpressiveperformancesoverthepasttwoyears,despitethelogisticaldifficultiesencounteredin2010.ThiswillbeparticularlyevidentinourcurrentlargerolesindevelopmentofNewCourses,andmaycontinuetoexpandwhenconsideringtheintegratingrolewhichmayberequiredoncesomeofthecoursesareimplemented.

Interprofessional Learning
Inearly2010,theFacultyT&LCommitteeformedtheInterprofessionalLearningInterest

Group(IPLIG).InitsformationtheIPLIGdeterminedfivefundamentalcommitmentsfortheFacultytostrengthenandenhanceIPLasanintegralcomponentoftraining,researchandfacultydevelopment.During2010studentsfromMedicine,Nursing,DentistryandPodiatricMedicinehavebeeninvolvedinpilotinginterprofessioalclinicalattachments,participatinginsimulatedwardlearningandastudentledinterprofessionalwardatRPH.Theseandotherinitiativesincludinganoverseas,two‐weekelectiveplacementinpopulationhealthforallundergraduatestudents(includingHealthScience)areofferedin2011.

Reaccreditation of the MBBS Course
TheMBBScoursewasdueforreaccreditationbytheAustraliaMedicalCouncilin2010.TheEducationCentreassistedincoordinatingboththereaccreditationsubmissionreportdueinFebruaryandtheAMCvisitinMay.
ItwasamammothtaskandthepreparationstartedwellbeforeJuly2009.Allstaffinvolvedinthecurriculumcontributedtheirtime,effortandknowledgetothereaccreditationprocess.AlettersenttotheViceChancellorfromtheAMCconfirmedthatourMBBScourseisreaccreditedforanother6yearsuntil31December2016.Welldoneeveryone!
Doctor of Medicine (MD) Curriculum Retreat
AstheUniversityannouncedcourserestructure,theFacultyhasalsodecidedtoofferpostgraduatelevelprofessionalcourses.MasterofMedicine(MD)isoneofthesecourses.ProfessorDavidKandiahhasbeenspecificallybroughtintotheEducationCentretotakeonthetaskofdevelopingthenew4yearMDcourse.
AMDcurriculumdevelopmentretreatinNovember2010inSeaShellsResortMandurahwasorganisedasanopportunityforcurriculuminvolvedstafftoraiseideas,questionsandidentifythedirectiontheFacultyshouldheadtowardforthenewMDcourse.Theretreatwasasuccessfulonewithdecisionsmadeonwaystomoveforward.

AnsweringClinical Questions
MemberoftheEducationCentrestaff,AssociateProfessorDianaJonas‐DwyerandMsFionaLeece,werepartoftheAnsweringClinicalQuestion(ACQ)Projectteamwiththekeyresponsibilityofdesigningandmaintainingthetheweb‐basedresource.ACQhasbeencreatedtosupportteachingandlearningofevidencebasedpractice(EBP)skillsacrossalldisciplinesatFMDHSwiththeaimto:
•improvestudents’skillsinEBP•communicatetheFMDHSapproachtoEBP•provideacommonterminology•offerarangeofresourcestosupportEBPclinicalteaching
Theclinicalcontenthasbeenstructuredintofoursequentiallearningmodules:
•Formulateaclinicalquestion•Findthebestevidence•Appraisetheevidence•ApplytheevidenceACQhasbeendesignedtoaccommodateevidencebasedpracticeacrosstheFaculty.Thelearningmodulesaremultidisciplinary.Resourcematerialwithinthelearningmodulesisavailableformedicine,dentistry,podiatricmedicine,nursingandphysiotherapy(andcanbeexpandedfurtherasnecessary).Materialsincludeaglossary,clinicalexamples,anddirectlinkstoUWAinformationresources(suchasDynamed,Clin‐eguideandMedline),printableguides,andworksheetstoassistwithcriticalappraisal.

Online module projects
TheManagedLearningEnvironmentTeamintheEducationCentrehasbeenassistinganumberofclinicalteachingstaffindevelopingonlinelearningmodulesusingvariousinteractiveeducationalsoftwareandlinkingthemoduleswithWebCTforeasinessofaccessforstudents.Belowaretwooftheprojects.
Thefour‐partUrologymodulewasfundedbythe2008FacultyTeachingandLearninggrantandwiththedeterminationandcontributionofProfessorDickonHayneandDrWeiLing‐Ooi,themodulesarenowaccessiblebystudents.

TheonlineionizingradiationfordiagnosticimagingtestsmodulewasinitiatedbyProfessorRichardMendelsonandProfessorRichardFoxwasdevelopedtobeusedinconjunctionwiththeDiagnosticImagingPathwayswebsitetoeducatestudentsaboutpatientsafetyandionizingradiationfromdiagnostictests.

CATLyst Sessional Staff Project
TheCATLystNetworkconsistsoflocalappointees(CATLysts)withintheFacultieswhohavebroadresponsibilityforpromotingteachingandlearningwithintheFaculty,andtoworkwithotherswithinthenetworktopromoteteachingandlearningwithinthebroaderUWAcommunity.In2009and2010,CATLystsworkedonaprojectdesignedtodeveloptrainingandresourcestosupportsessionalstaffwithinindividualfaculties.Theprojectconsistedofconductingasurveyofsessionalstaff,anddevelopinganddeliveringworkshops,conductingaprofessionaldevelopmentdayanddevelopingaresourceswebsiteforsessionalstaff.Theinitialfindingsoftheprojectwerepresentedatthe2010TeachingandLearningForumatCurtinUniversity.
PromotingReliable Assessment in Student ‐centred Environment(PRAiSE) Project
Intheongoingquesttoenhancestudentlearning,AssistantProfessorZarrinSiddiquiandtheFacultyITmembersdevelopedthePRAiSEonlineassessmentresources,housedonWebCT,whichpromotesbetterassessmentpracticesbyprovidingresourcesforacademicstoadoptsomenewandinnovativemethodsofassessment.It
ThePRAiSEonlineassessmentresourcecomplementsthecontinuoussupportofferedbytheEducationCentre.Itaddressestheneedsidentifiedbyacademicstafftohaveassessmentresourcesavailableattheirfingertips,soastopromotebetterassessmentpracticesforstudentlearning.Itnotonlyprovidesusefulinformationrelatedtoassessment,butalsoaninsightintowhate‐learningoptionscanbeusedtoengagestudentswhoarestudyingonline.
Theresourceincludesawiderangeofassessmentliteratures,interactiveactivities,bestpracticeexamplesandadvisesonsettingexamquestions,assessmentfeedback,moderationandmore.
SinceitsinceptioninJuly2009,theprojecthasbeenwidenedtoincludeinformationaboutdevelopmentsandeventsinhealthprofessionaleducation,andlinkstorelevantorganisationsandresourcesglobally.Itisexpectedthatthisresourcewillultimatelybecomeavailabletotheuniversitycommunityfortheirprofessionaldevelopmentandfurthercontribution.
Faculty Feedback Project
Inthesecondhalfof2010,theUWAteachingandLearningCommitteeawardedfundingtotheFacultytoconductaprojectaimedatimprovingthestudentlearningexperienceatUWAwithafocusonassessmentandfeedback.TheFacultyprojectobjectivesaretodescribethecurrentmechanismsusedtoprovidefeedbackforstudentsundertakingclinicalattachmentsinmedicine,nursing,podiatricmedicineanddentistry,andtodevelopmechanismsforstudentstoreceivefeedbackontheirperformanceinclinicalexaminations.Towardstheendof2010,aninterventionwasconductedwithstudentsundertakingtheMasterofNursing.

AUnitCoordinators’StudyDaywasconductedbythestaffattheEducationCentreinFebruary2010.About20staffmembersattendedandthetopicscoveredincludedcurriculumdevelopment,teachingmethodologies,assessment,theUniversity’sLearningManagementSystem,learningoutcomesandevaluationandfeedback.
Undergraduate Orientation
OneweekbeforefirstyearstudentsareduetoembarkontheirUniversitystudyjourney,theEducationCentrealwayscoordinatewithstaffwithintheUniversityandtheFacultyinorganisingaweeklongorientationprogramtowelcomestudentsenrolledinMBBS,BDSc,BPodMedandBHSc.EachdegreedisciplineconductstheirspecificorientationsduringtheweekandallfirstyearundergraduatestudentsintheFacultyareinvitedtotheFacultyWelcomewheretheyreceiveaspecialwelcomefromanAboriginalelder,theopportunitytomeettheDean,theAssociateDeansandbeinformedofvarioussupporttheywillreceiveduringtheirstudies.SeetableXXandXXfor
