Studies and Extant Data Sets: 1995, Study of Social Well-Being. Received grant of $13,000 from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Successful Midlife Development to collect data on social functioning and social health. Study aims are to investigate the structure of social well-being, the sociodemographic distribution of wellness, and the social correlates and predictors (i.e., behavioral, cognitive, and multiple role) of health and well-being. Included are an array of measures of health and well-being, social involvement and volunteering, self construal (e.g., agency and communion) and social role evaluations (e.g., importance). Split-ballots also investigate the social motives

underlying self comparison processes. I designed the interview schedule, supervised field testing and interviewer training, and monitored implementation of a 30 minute telephone interview conducted by the Letters and Sciences Survey Center, University of Wisconsin-Madison. Data come from a random (digit dialing) sample of 373 adults, 18 years old or older, residing in Dane County, Wisconsin. 1995, MacArthur Foundation’s Studies of Successful Midlife Development. This project included several large nationally representative samples that served as pilot studies of questions and modules that preceded the 1995 national study of successful midlife. In turn, my scales of social well-being are among the indicators of successful adult development in the national study conducted in 1995 by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Research Network on Successful Midlife Development (MIDMAC). The MIDMAC Network seeks to understand the patterns, predictors and consequences of successful midlife development through the criteria of successes in physical health, mental health and social health. Toward that end, the national survey was administered to a nationally representative sample of 7,240 people. Respondents were recruited by telephone. The sample consists of 4,240 people in the general population, as well as 1,000 siblings of this population, and 1,000 twin-pairs. The 4,240 general population respondents includes an equal-probability subsample of 3,490, plus oversamples of 500 adult residents of the Boston metropolitan area and 50 more people in each of five metropolitan areas (Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Phoenix and San Francisco). All respondents were in the age range of 25 to 74 years old. 2005, Wave 2 of MacArthur Foundation’s Studies of Successful Midlife Development. This project includes re-interviews of the original respondents in the MIDUS 1995 core surveys, twin sample, and city subsamples. This project is being funded by the National Institute on Aging and is directed by Dr. Carol Ryff, director of the Institute on Aging at the University of Wisconsin. 1997, Second Wave, Panel Study of Income Dynamics -- Child Development Supplement. My diagnostic protocol for mental health (Languishing-Flourishing) is being used in the second wave of the PSID-CDS for all children and adolescents. The Panel Study of Income Dynamics supplemented its core data collection in 1997 with data on parents and their 0- to 12-year-old children, the Child Development Supplement (PSID-CDS). The objective of this study is to provide researchers with a comprehensive, nationally representative, and longitudinal database of children and their families with which to study the dynamic process of early human capital formation. The data collection includes the following: (i) reliable, age graded assessments of the cognitive, behavioral, and health status of 3,563 children (including about 329 immigrant children), obtained from the mother, a second caregiver, an absent parent, the teacher, the school administrator, and the child; (ii) a comprehensive accounting of parental and caregiver time inputs to children as well as other aspects of the way children and adolescents spend their time; (iii) teacher-reported time use in elementary and preschool programs; and (iv) other-than-time use measures of other resources for example, the learning environment in the home, teacher and administrator reports of school resources, and decennial-census-based measurement of neighborhood resources. Since 2007, FORT3—Psychfortology in the South African Context. Collaborator with Dr. Marie Wissing and colleagues from Northwest University in South Africa on this epidemiological study of health and well-being in South Africa. Since 2007, Mental Health in the MESS Panel Study in the Dutch Population. Collaborator with Dr. Gerben Westerhof of Radboud University in Nijmegen on the application of my measure and model of mental health in the internet-based panel study of Dutch adults.
