ISSUE 02

WELCOME It’s hard to imagine but another year has passed and the summer is fying by. Our frst newsletter was well received, providing annual updates to the faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the Theresa Patnode Santmann School of Health Sciences.

Faculty continue to be productive in all areas of academic life, licensure rates are well above the national average, and additional equipment and instrumentation have been added to our inventory. We are still among the most selective Schools of Health Sciences in the nation, making our graduates sought after by local and regional organizations.

I am pleased to announce that two new programs will be fully operational by Fall 2019. Dr. Jack Thomas will chair the Department of Nutritional Science and Wellness, which will be housed in newly renovated space in Lupton Hall. The department will include baccalaureate programs in Health Promotion and Wellness, and Nutrition Science. Also, Applied Gerontology will be the next program under the new department, and we expect SUNY approval, perhaps by summer’s end.

Dr. Denny Ryman, Dean

NURSING DEPARTMENT NEWS Dr. Kathleen Cino, Chairperson

RN-BS ONLINE PROGRAM The nursing department is going online. In fall 2018, the Farmingdale State College Department of Nursing will offer a fully online RN to BS completion pathway for registered nurses seeking a bachelor degree. Dr. Maria Nikolaidou is the coordinator and adviser for this new pathway. The RN to BS completion students are fully supported with online orientation, advisement, tutoring, as well as the full range of Farmingdale State College student services.

GRANT FUNDED SIMULATION RESEARCH Simulation research began in spring 2018. Drs. Goodstone, Glaser, Nikolaidou are funded through the Theresa Patnode Santmann Faculty Development Award to investigate the effect of deliberate practice to increase student nurse competency and decrease anxiety during high stakes skill testing.

INTER-PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE IN SIMULATION The inter-professional partnership between LIEOC and the FSC Department of Nursing continues. Ms. Theresa Dember-Neal, Dr. Nancy Maggio and Dr. Karen Coutrier have increased the number of inter-professional (IP) experiences for students (nurse and nursing assistant). The current number of IP experiences is two per semester. An increase in the number of inter-professional experiences is planned for students in future semesters to foster learning in a team environment.

New FSC nursing simulation scenarios have been adapted for use with nursing assistant students. This is ongoing and dependent on scenarios chosen by faculty and staff for use in inter-professional activities.

Each week for 7-9 weeks (depending on the needs of the nursing department), LIEOC nursing assistant students come to the nursing laboratory for two hours to prepare for working as a part of the inter-professional team with the student

NURSING STUDENT MENTOR PROGRAM Student Nurse Mentors were given the opportunity to mentor primary education minority students from underserved school districts on Long Island, specifcally the Central Islip School District. Nursing students gained an appreciation of the importance of exposing minority grade school students to the profession, which may provide a pipeline of diverse professionals who are prepared to function in a complex healthcare system.

Two visits – October and November 2017 - were made to Mulligan Middle School in Central Islip, New York. During each visit, middle school children were presented with nursing concepts such as teamwork, assessment, and infection control. These concepts were introduced through activities including donning and doffng personal protective equipment, taking blood pressure and temperature, and select videos on the topics.

Feedback from school administrators was outstanding and nursing students were invited back for additional educational sessions. Middle school students were surveyed to measure their satisfaction with the program. Results indicated that the majority were highly satisfed and gained knowledge about health concepts.

MLT CLUB MEMBERS MAKING A DIFFERENCE Striving to promote professionalism and leadership in the laboratory profession, the MLT Club was extremely successful this year in participating in a variety of community service and campus activities. A highly dedicated group of club offcers (see photo) organized many noteworthy activities that included collecting and contributing clothing items for the Golden Key Honor Society’s winter clothing drive and assisting the Department of Dental Hygiene with its annual “Give Kids A Smile” day. Club members also hosted tables at campus club fairs and participated in lunch and learn sessions with regional hospital laboratories. The highlight of the year was the annual celebration of National Medical Laboratory Professionals Week during April 22 – 28 with a webinar and festive luncheon for MLT students. Kudos to this year’s MLT Club offcers who shone in their leadership roles to promote community engagement for our future Medical Laboratory professionals.

MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT During this academic year, the NAACLS re-accreditation process was completed for the baccalaureate program in Medical Technology. Following the site visit by NAACLS volunteers in April 2018, the report cited no defciencies in meeting accreditation standards. The program will receive an accreditation award of up to ten years following the NAACLS Board of Directors meeting in Fall 2018.

The Department of Medical Laboratory Technology will no longer offer the AS degree in MLT following the graduation of the last group of students in May 2019. In anticipation of offering only the BS-level Medical Technology program, the department has revised the MLT courses offered as part of the curriculum requirements. This represents a redistribution rather than a change in the program content, with all courses now educating directly to the BS level. The transition to this revised curriculum will be complete as of spring 2019.

The department was awarded a NYS High Needs Grant titled Medical Laboratory Technology Curriculum Enhancement. The focus of the grant will be to increase the clinical sites affliated with the Medical Technology program, thus increasing the opportunities for our students as they complete the clinical practicum courses required in the curriculum. A regional clinical coordinator will be hired for the two-year term of the grant.

Dr. Karen Escolas In her frst term as a member of Review Committee for Accredited Program (RCAP) of the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS), Dr. Escolas has participated in awarding accreditation status and approval of Program Directors for other medical laboratory programs throughout the United States.

Additionally, she has acted as a Site Visitor for programs in Vidalia, GA, and Big Rapids, MI.

Dr. Christine Nebocat After completing her Doctorate in Health Education, Dr. Christine Nebocat presented her research fndings through various scholarly activities. Dr. Nebocat coordinated with Mr. Dennis Ernst, one of the leading phlebotomy experts in the nation, to co-write an article for Phlebotomy Today! This phlebotomy

newsletter has more than 10,000 readers worldwide. Dr. Nebocat’s research was published in Teaching and Learning in Nursing. This journal focuses on advancing undergraduate nursing education. These research fndings were also presented at the 2018 Nursing Education Research Conference, sponsored by the National League for Nursing and Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. Evidence-based teaching practices were promoted through oral and poster presentations, to advance the educational outcomes of nursing students. Additionally, Dr. Nebocat was able to share her research with her peers through the Celebration of Scholarship event, held at the College.

DENTAL HYGIENE DEPARTMENT NEWS Maureen Tsokris, RDH, EdD Chairperson

The Department of Dental Hygiene at Farmingdale State College has participated in several community outreach projects over the last academic year, both here on campus, in the surrounding community, and abroad.

In 2014 Professors Ann Lalezarian and Barbara Greene created the dental division of Blanca’s House, a non-proft volunteer organization based in Huntington, New York. The organization brings medical and dental services to the underserved people of Latin American communities. They have made three successful dental missions to Ecuador providing preventive dental hygiene services to over 1,000 Ecuadorians as evidenced by the happy faces pictured above.

Each November the faculty and students gather to honor veterans that have fallen on hard times. This event, called “Give a Veteran a Smile”, was coordinated by Professor Adele Spencer. The students donate items that are used to make wash-up kits. These items include, but are not limited to, shampoo, body wash, deodorant, razors, and toothbrushes and toothpaste. These kits are then donated to Beacon House, a respite for veterans.

The frst Friday in February is national “Give Kids a Smile”. Here at Farmingdale, under the direction of Dr. Lynn Marsh, the sophomore students, assisted by freshmen students, full-time and adjunct faculty, provide preventative services to children from the community in our Dental Hygiene Care Center. The experience is an overwhelming success thanks to the dedication of the students and faculty. Pictured above are just a few of our dedicated faculty; Dr. Lynn Marsh, Professor Janet Gruber, Professor Harriet Goldenberg, Dr. Maureen Tsokris, and Professor Jean Hall. Other faculty that participated in the event are Dr. Larry Pizzitola, Dr. Cristina Casa-Levine, Professor Bonnie Tanney, Professor Marlene Azzam, Professor Susan Vogell, Professor Daniela Taranto, Professor Chris Matis, and Professor Loretta Mariano.

In April 2018, Professors Daniela Taranto and Loretta Mariano provided oral health presentations titled “Good Nutritional Habits” and “Oral Health for Seniors” to Island Harvest meal recipients.

On Sunday, April 29 Professors Allison Fody, Barbara Greene, and Janet Gruber along with Drs. Hanna Horowitz and Lauren Argentina participated in The Oral Cancer Foundation Walk/Run for Awareness.

In addition to the above events, students and faculty eagerly participated in the Great American Smoke Out, campus Health and Wellness Fair, and the Candlelight Vigil for the Homeless.
