The Age Of New Imperialism(1869-1914)

Intro Between 1860-1914, Western expansion and colonialism spread

throughout the rest of the world as Great Britain, Spain, Holland,

France, Germany, Russia and the U.S. all competed for markets and

raw materials for their expanding economies.

The Industrial revolution that took place in the West is what allowed

these countries to become new world powers.

By the end of the 19th century, virtually all of the peoples of Asia and

Africa were under colonial rule.

What To Think About?

How or why did Western powers able to colonies Africa and Asia.

What were the views of the colonizer and the colonized?

What Is Imperialism?

Imperialism is the extension of a nation’s power over other lands or countries. (Ex. Crusades, Britain’s colonies in America, and even U.S. territorial expansion)

This “New” form of imperialism began as nations now sought after total control of countries to benefit their own countries.

The New Imperialism In the late 19th Century (1880’s), a new phase of Western expansion, and scramble for new territory broke

out.

European nations wanted natural resources that Africa and Asia provided Africa Provided a rich source of mineral wealth, such as gold, diamonds, coal, iron, copper and other

metals Asia provided tea, spices, and silk These two areas also provided new lands

Early European imperialism started as small trading posts and missionary work, but this was all about to change. Europe had to started in small areas due to the fact that they were not the power house of the world

yet. China was the leader before and during this time and the West had to play by their rules.

Rise to Power

The Industrial Revolution allowed the West to rise to power. The Industrial Revolution created several advances

Advances in… Technology (the steam engine, trains) Weapons and warfare (rifles, guns) Economics (Mass production, and assembly lines / factories) Culture and religions ideologies (“The White Man’s Burden”,

Social Darwinism / Racism

The Western Justification

Europeans used new ideas from science and moral religious duties as their justification to colonies other countries

Social Darwinism is the belief that in the struggle between nations, only the strongest would survive, This came with the belief that some races were better than others.

“The White Man’s Burden was the beliefs that to be a good Christian or civilized country it was the Wests job to help the colored skinned people of the world. The goal was to make them civilized and Christians.

Example is how Frodo felt his burden was to protect and destroy the one ring.

Africa

African Reaction When Africa was first colonized local tribes such as the Zulu fought with force against the British.

They were crushed because of the over whelming technological difference.

After 1900 a nationalist movement started to rise in Africa. There goals were to rid Africa of foreign rule. Africa would win their independence very slowly from the West, but still are dealing with

repercussions from imperialism till this day.

Why did this movement form? The west was preaching and teaching ideas of independence, human rights, and education

but was not allowing the natives of Africa to have any of these things.

What is Nationalism? Nationalism is a belief, creed or political ideology that involves and individual identifying

with, or becoming attached to, one’s nation.

China

Before the 1900’s China was the power house of the World.

Western countries would only trade for a short time of the year with China.

Opium wars The west found out that China would only buy

Opium. This was a drug is very addictive The Chinese saw opium as evil and

wanted Britain to stop selling it. Briatian said no, so China destroyed

thousand dollars of British Opium. Britain was not happy and went to war

with China.

China’s Doors Forced Open

After the Opium wars Britain force China to open its doors to free trade. This allowed other countries gain power in China.

China was carved up by Western powers and Japan. Unlike China Japan embraced western science and Imperialism making it a player in the new world

of imperialism. There were several uprisings to try and fix China and rid themselves of western influence.

http://www.indiana.edu/~e232/Time2.html China would not be in power until a nationalist movement starts and China unifies to gain its

independence. This forms because of the abuse and division that foreign countries are imposing on China. China will unify under a communist leader and become the China that we know today.

Last Thoughts

How was imperialsum in China and Africa the same or different.

What are some affects that we still see from Imperialism in todays society.

Can you think of any way that we still practice imperialism today

Did the Age of New Imperialism really stop in 1914 or is it still continuing today?
