I know how to pronounce common prefixes and suffixes.Student Reasoning Targets:

    I can blend words containing a prefix and/or a suffix.Student Performance Targets:

    I can orally read words with a prefix and/or a suffix.Student-Friendly Vocabulary

I know an affixis a syllable or group of syllables added to a word to change its meaning. I know a prefix is a word part that can be added to the beginning of a base word. A prefix

adds to the meaning of the base word.

I know a suffix is a word part added to the end of a base word. A suffix adds to the meaningof the base word.

    E. Procedure:1. Sayeach of the following words and have children write them down in their journals:

    a. Darkerb. Fasterc. Colderd. Strongere. Have children put slashes between the base words and suffixes.

    2. Askvolunteers to write each word on the board and divide the word parts with slashes.3. Repeat the procedure with the suffix estand the words longest, fastest, slowest, nicest.4. Write the word shorteron the board.5. Say the word and ask which letters say shortand which letters say er.6. Have children read the word.7. Repeat the procedure with these words.

    a. Sillierb. Cleanestc. Funniest

    8. Point to shorteragain and ask:a. What do the letters s-h-o-r-t say? What do the letters e-r say?b. Lets read the word.

    9. Repeat the procedure with the remaining words:a. Short/erb. Sil/li/erc. Clean/estd. Fun/ni/est

    F. Closure:Have small groups of children look for objects around the classroom or in magazines and newspapers which

they can describe and label wither and estwords: for example they can take three thick books and label

them with the words thick, thicker, and thickestor find three or more yellow objects and label them yellow,

yellower, and yellowest. Then have each group sort its words by suffix and by number if syllables.

    G. Assessment:Assessment Tool

To check comprehension, I will have students use their whiteboards to create sentences using the base

word plus the suffix. If I see students struggling with the concept by day 3, I will re-teach the lesson.

    What Is Being Assessed?

By writing sentences on their whiteboards and understanding how the suffix changes the meaning of the

word is what is being assessed.

    H. Reflection & Thoughts:Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest to teach?

Since this is day 3 of learning about suffixes erandest, at this point it should be review of the lesson.

Therefore, this lesson should be easy to teach.

Which part of the lesson do you think will be the most challenging to teach?

This will be day 3 of our lesson on suffixes er and est. This particular lesson will be a review. Therefore, I

feel that this will not be a challenging lesson to teach. However, I will be prepared with extra assignments

in case students are struggling with suffix comprehension.

What lesson or concept should be taught prior to this lesson?

Students should know the suffixeris defined as more and the suffix estis defined as most. Students

should know that a suffix added to a base word changes the meaning of the word.

How will you follow up or extend this lesson?

I will extend this lesson using the advanced support activity located on page S59.

I will extend this lesson by having children create their own dictionaries of words with the suffixeserand

est. The words should be in alphabetical order and include meanings. Children can also write sentences

using some of the words to show that they understand how suffixes change the meanings of words.

What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts?

    est worksheet (abcteach.com)

Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change?

I think that I need to add another activity in order to make sure my students understand the difference

between suffixeser and est. I would ask children to take turns at the computers to work on this fun

game athttp://www.ezschool.com/Games/PrefixSuffix.html. Students will be asked to fish for root words

and add a prefix or a suffix to complete the new word. They earn points as the make correct pairs.

When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part?

My challenge for this lesson plan was how to engage all of my students during the direct instruction lesson.

Using personal whiteboards should hold each student accountable for the material while keeping their interest

level up. During independent practice and assessment, the ezschool website will allow students to spend moretime combining root words with the correct prefix or suffix. This website will help students comprehend

suffixes if they are struggling with it.
