Reading #1

• We consulted a number of different sources on the basics of computers, the internet, and the history of the internet. I chose to make up multiple choice questions about the lessons that I read. Topics include the parts of a computer, internet terms, and key events in internet/computer history. I have included the multiple choice questions that I created on the next three slides.

Assessments

• One of our assignments this semester was to create a set of usable test questions on the subject of our choosing. We were required to make an assessment with at least 5 questions of 3 different types (Multiple choice, true-false, fill in the blank, and/or open ended questions). I used http://testdesigner.com/ to create questions about the Civil War. The questions are designed for fourth-fifth grade students.

Reading #2

• We explored the importance of copyright and the idea of fair use. Whenever an educator is using someone else’s work, copyright restrictions must be kept in mind. Teachers should model for their students the importance of giving credit to those who did the work. I created 3 blog entries to demonstrate what I learned from our readings. The blog entries include Copyright Essentials for Teachers, Is Fair Use a License to Steal?, and 10 Copyright Myths. My blog entries can be found using the link below.

Technology Brochure

• Following Reading #2, we were asked to design a brochure on the subject of copyright and what a teacher should do if he/she has questions about copyright. I used Microsoft Publisher to complete my brochure.

Reading #3 Assistive Technology

• Our next topic was assistive technology. Assistive Technology is any tool designed to help students with disabilities. Below are the questions we were asked about this topic and my answers.

a. Name at least three items that could be considered AT and describe how those devices could support a student with a disability in the classroom.

Items that could be considered Assistive Technology include pencil grips, tape recorders, and timers. These items are forms of Assistive Technology because they help improve and/or maintain learning capabilities. The pencil grips may help students who struggle with holding pencils and low muscle tone. Recorders may be used so that students do not have to write down notes in class. This would be beneficial to those who have trouble multitasking and paying attention. Timers can help students keep track of how much times they have to complete a task. It will allow them to have a plan and pace that they can follow. Students will also know how long they should spend on a certain task.

b. Explain two reasons why it is necessary to consider AT for students with disabilities

It is necessary to consider Assistive Technology for students with disabilities because it gives them access to a variety of learning tools. Assistive Technology will also help them learn from the curriculum that is in place. Basically, the goal of Assistive Technology is to narrow the gap that a disability puts between one student and other students.

Page 13: Edn 303 assignment portfolio

Assistive Technology Continued…

c. Why is it important to consider both AT devices and services?

It is important to consider both AT devices and services because you need to make sure that all students who need Assistive Technology receive it is a key component of the access to free appropriate public education concept.

d. Describe three responsibilities of the Implementation Team.

Three responsibilities of the Implementation Team are matching a disabled student with the most beneficial Assistive Technology tool, determining how Assistive Technology will be used in the classroom, and making a plan for how the success of Assistive Technology will be evaluated.

e. Imagine you are a teacher (let me know your grade and one subject area) and a student in your class has an upcoming IEP meeting. What types of information should you gather ahead of time to contribute to the discussion of the student's AT needs? Name at least four.

• I am an Elementary Education major, so I will be teaching 1st-5th grade. I would like to teach either Language Arts or Social Studies. Prior to an IEP meeting, I think it is most important to fully understand a student’s disability. First, I would collect all of the background information on the student as possible. Second, I would ask the student’s former teachers which forms of Assistive Technology best help the student. Third, I would make a list of which forms of Assistive Technology I think would be most beneficial to the student and which ones I plan to use in the classroom. Lastly, I would consult the student to see what their opinions are about the Assistive Technology and if they think it is working or will help them. If I had gathered all of this information before the meeting, I think I would be more than prepared to contribute to a discussion of the student’s needs.

Reading #4

• We learned about the importance of integrating technology into the classroom as well. Technology is so relevant in today’s world that students need to become acquainted with using it. To review what I learned, I created three kinds of puzzles using http://www.discoveryeducation.com/free-puzzlemaker/

Multimedia Instruction Project

• I learned how to create a WebQuest. The topic of my WebQuest was the branches of the United States Government. Before this class, I had never even heard of WebQuests, let alone created one. However, I can see how students would benefit from exploring a concept on their own. I think they would have fun researching topics on their own.

• Here is the link to my WebQuest:

Gradebook

• Technology tools can be very helpful for teachers as well. I created an example of a gradebook using Microsoft Publisher. I have not worked with Publisher very much and still need to work with it more, but I got the general idea. The chart is easy to follow and it is relatively quick to set up.
