June is here, and it came roaring in like a tiger. This month all thoughts are usually on summer vacation, Father’s Day and general good times with friends and family. However, for some in the community their thoughts are on rebuilding lives and property in El Reno, Piedmont and Guthrie. We have found numerous organized efforts through our social media networks that are aimed at helping those in need. We have listed them on our Facebook Fanpage at EdmondActive, if you would like to help in any way. Our prayers and thoughts go out to those who lost family members, their homes or had friends or loved ones injured in the May 24th tornados. Our June Local Heroes are the OKC Weathermen, who are responsible for making sure more people in the community stayed out of harms way.

This month we are offering you a great reference guide to the upcoming 2011 Liberty Fest week-long festival Edmond is famous for! This year the theme is “America The Beautiful” and the fun all starts with the Taste of Edmond on Broadway in Downtown on Sunday June 26th at 6:30 pm. Then with the amazing city parade in Downtown Edmond on Monday July 4th at 9 am, and ending with one of the best fireworks displays in the country at 10 pm at UCO. Keep this issue for the full schedule of events and visit our Facebook Fanpage at EdmondActive for parade & firework photos!

Sometimes there is a great story that is waiting to be told and Alison Slaton’s is one of them. She is a local

Edmond elementary school student who is making her mark in sprint car racing, and who is sponsored by the national indoor kart racing chain Pole Position Raceway. And Trevor Hultner delves into Edmond’s bustling music scene in the 90’s with a conversation with band members from They Stay Dead.

This month’s Metro Food & Drink really turn up the flavor for your grilling pleasure with Crawfish Boudine from The Beef Jerky Emporium and Gourmet Foods and Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier from the Edmond Wine Shop.

Our second feature in our newest section, Field Trip, is of Rosebrook Vineyards, located in South OKC by Rachel Odom. Rosebrook is an amazing working vineyard, along with a historic barn, which serves as an event center. This is a must see for any bride to be, it’s absolutely stunning. They offer full service bridal & event planning by D’Plazzo Events and makeup & more by Tawfik.

In My Home this month, Jennifer Hicks talks about the newest cutting edge style for Gen Y and we talk about your lawn & garden to do list for Oklahoma’s hot & humid summers in our My Yard section.

Our Body & Mind contributors Leann Richards of Senses, Haley Ray of Body Language Fitness and Jason Boag of Crossfit OKC, all have the month off, but we look forward to more great info from them in July!

Enjoy your time this month with your families & friends and have a terrific June!

Every year in Oklahoma we live under the constant threat of

severe weather and tornados. And for our community this year,

it was as destructive as it could get. With lost lives, homes and

property, our family’s thoughts and prayers go out to all the

families that were affected on May 24th.

Please take a look at the contacts we have provided to lend a

hand as a volunteer for clean up, to serve food or to just make a

donation of any sort.

Starting over is never easy, but knowing the community has

their back may help these families.

Let’s all pitch in and pay it forward.

A favorite past time of local residents is to joke about our local weathermen. It doesn’t matter what time of the year it may occur, it happens without fail. There is the Gary England Drinking Game, Mike Morgan’s weather tie--in all its sparkling glory. And just general ribbing at every one of their exuberant attitudes during extreme weather.

Last December, the weathermen kept coming on stronger and stronger with their warnings. Two days before Christmas they were calling for a blizzard on Christmas Eve. My observation of our readers was that everyone scoffed it off and went on about their pre Christmas rush. The Weathermen proved correct in their warnings and hundreds of people became stuck in record-breaking snowdrifts.

Jump forward to May 24th of this year. For a few days before hand, all of the weathermen were telling residents to keep aware for a possible tornado outbreak. Folks here are good about paying attention to tornado warnings, however this outbreak happened faster than most expected it would. For those of us in Edmond, where the largest long-track tornado was originally aimed, we dodged a pretty serious bullet that day.

This month we are awarding every local metro weatherman as our Local Hero. From the timely and early warnings that were given, we feel that they all helped save hundreds, if not thousands of lives.

Thanks very much to all of you, because when it comes down to it, and all joking aside, you make this one of the safest cities in tornado alley.

Designing For Gen YBy Jennifer Hicks CID / Designing Diva Interiors, LLCwww.DecorateOKC.net/blog Photos: Sherri Hultner

“I want something glamorous mixed with, like, a commercial chef’s kitchen” and a little farmhouse vintage...or modern, I really love modern. I don’t know... I want it all.” This is the start of a long conversation I had with a twenty-something prospect that possessed an edgy personality, a decent budget and no fear, my three favorite things in a client. I was beginning an initial consultation with this young woman when her words struck me as I took notes. “This is the new face of interior design”, I realized. Gone are the days of young women making statements with matching chintz, stiff wingback chairs and pastel walls. Our mothers found freedom in mixing a couple of styles but in most cases she hasn’t strayed far since purchasing her first throw pillow. Then there is Gen Y (or Generation Y, coined to describe those born between the 80’s and the early 2000’s); a breed all their own. This would-be client represented a change happening all over the design world in her age group. The “my style can’t be defined” group. The anti-coordinating, multi-layering, I-like-it-all group.

I heard my client loud and clear... now how to give her what she was after when not even she could clearly define it? I had to start asking some new

questions. Rather than “Which stores do you like?” I needed to ask “With which countries or regions do you relate to most?” Instead of “Which colors did you want to decorate with?” I needed to find out which emotions she wanted to draw from as inspiration. Sorry, Martha. Your color-coded sheet sets have no place in these loft apartments. It was now my job to bring together blown-glass art from Italy, Moroccan-inspired hand carved tables and a great grandmother’s German china collection without making a single surface appear cluttered and chaotic. This style is more representative of life’s journey than it is of any big box store summer collection. I hypothesized that Generation Y as a whole sees no restrictions; we go to the boundaries and then cross them (we did invent the X Games, after all). I like to think of myself and fellow 80’s babies as EOD’s (Equal Opportunity Decorators). Eventually I learned to think of this job and those that followed not as challenges but as adventures. I realized I wasn’t alone. I wasn’t the only person who adored her 100-year-old Victorians as much as she admired the stark contrast of hand-forged metal sculptures. There was room for all of it (cue angels

singing)! It would require practice. A delicate balance; an appreciation for all cultures. Complete submission to the gut check.

HGTV recently asked me to describe my personal style and in my struggle to define it beyond “A deliberate blend of old and new” I asked friends for their opinion. I credit a friend and former client we’ll simply call “K” for giving my collaborative designs its official term: Fusion. The dictionary defines “fusion” as “The merging of different elements into a union”. It was perfect. Today I’m settling into my niche as Oklahoma’s leading Fusion decorator with complete joy Its like that saying “Psychologists study psychology not to help patients but to fix themselves.” I’ve been able to create some incredible rooms and build lasting relationships with those clients over the years but it’s been just as exciting discovering my own fusion style along the way. What do you know…I guess Generation Y doesn’t really mind labels after all.

The dog days of summer are upon us, which means plenty of hot weather. Between now and mid August everything slows down in the garden so we can start spending less time doing and more time enjoying. There are always things that need to be done, and remember with the heat starting a month early this year, schedule your gardening for early morning or evening to avoid heat issues.

• With the weather turning extremely hot, avoid fertilizing your plants. It will further stress your plants to put energy into new growth during periods of heat. And of course, make sure to give your plants and lawn enough

water.• Be sure to keep your eye out for mildew on your plants.

If you see evidence of this by finding a grey circle with a black ring, head to your favorite garden center and pick up some Copper Fungicide. Be sure to follow the directions to prevent it from spreading during the humid months. A good way to avoid mildew is to NOT water in the evening.

• Raise the blade on your lawn mower. The tall grass will keep the roots cool and conserve moisture – a must during the hot weather typical of July.

• If you’ve been pinching back your garden mums to encourage a more compact shape, it’s time to stop and allow

them to set flower buds.• Tomato horn worms are large with green and white

stripes and a red “horn” near the end. Hand picking is the best method of control. However, if you see one covered in tiny, upright eggs leave it be. These are cocoons of the braconid wasp, a predator of the tomato horn worm.

• Some potted plants may need daily watering. Small pots, hanging baskets and window boxes in sunny locations may even need to be watered twice a day. If the top few inches of the soil are dry or the stems are wilting, it’s time to water.

• It’s time to start planning for your fall vegetable garden. For plants grown from seed, make sure they have enough time to mature before the first autumn freeze. Check the back of the seed packet to find the number of days until harvest to determine when you should plant.

• Keep your weeds pulled - especially those that spread by reseeding. If you can get rid of them before they go to seed you’ll have less work next year.

• Morning glories don’t like soil that’s too rich. In fact, if it’s too rich they will produce lots of vine and not many flowers, so be easy on the fertilizer.

• Provide a source of clean water to attract birds to your garden. Bird baths should be shallow with a rough surface for the birds to stand on. Place the bath at least 4 to 5 feet away from feeders to prevent droppings and seed debris from contaminating the water.

This is our favorite season in Oklahoma, where we are able to sit back and enjoy our gardens. Have a great June and stay cool!

Metro Food & Drink

Crawfish BoudineA summertime Cajun delicacy from Louisiana that

can be found right here at The Beef Jerky Emporium & Gourmet Foods on Danforth is one of the tastiest ways to enjoy time with family and friends. Crawfish Boudine is sausage like, but instead is stuffed with sautéed crawfish and rice. While Boudine is normally boiled for 15 minutes, we thought this would make a nice change to the everyday barbecue routine. The flavor is amazing and it is definitely on our list of barbecue regulars for summer! Stop by The Beef Jerky Emporium to try this amazing dish at 810 W. Danforth Rd.

Weihenstephaner

BeerNothing refreshes in the

summer heat quite like a nice cold wheat beer and none epitomizes the characteristics of true Bavarian Weissbier as well as those brewed by Weihenstephaner; founded in 1040, it is the world’s oldest brewery still operating. Weihenstephaner Hefewiessbier (now that’s a mouthful of a name)

possesses all of those distinctive flavors one would expect to find in the pinnacle of German Weissbier: medium-bodied with flavors of banana and clove with little to no hop character and a bright spritzy carbonation on the finish. By German law the grist used to

brew the beer can contain no less than 50% wheat malt with the remainder being Pilsner malt. You can find Weihenstephaner Beer at Edmond Wine Shop 1520 South Blvd.

Product Review

3. Hairspray vs. HumidityBumble & Bumble Bb does it All Hairspray

The worst thing about hairspray during the summer in Oklahoma is the flaky residue it leaves on your hair in the humidity. I brought this problem up to my hairstylist and he stated that Bumble & Bumble had a product that held hair well, was light to the touch and didn’t flake. I decided to try the smaller can, because I hear this often from salons. But after his recommendation, I gave it a try.

This particular hairspray is one of the few on the market that does exactly what it says and I would say it’s a must have for what’s looking to be a very long, humid summer! Bb does it All is available citywide at salons who carry Bumble & Bumble.

New ProductsWe LoveFor SummerBy Sherri Hultner

2. Lip Stain vs. 24 hour Lip Color

Everyone looks to the lighter side when it comes to their summer lip regimen. We decided to try the newest product on the market, Lip Stains, some which claim to stay for 16 hours and compare it to Maybelline’s newest product Super Stay 24 Color/Balm.NYC 16 Hour Lip Stain

This product was priced at $4.97 and was the lowest priced of the bunch. It was very drying when first applied and wore off, after two different applications, in under 2 hours. I wouldn’t recommend this product for a staying lip color regimen.Color Girl Outlast Lip Stain

Cover Girl was smart in not giving a specific time it’s attempt at lip stain would last, and it’s a good thing. Although it did last longer than the NYC and it was just

a bit less drying, the color only lasted for about 3 1/2 hours, tops. Priced at $5.69, probably best to pass up till the formula for lip stain is perfected.Maybelline Super Stay 24 Lip Color duo with balm

Wow. This is an another product that does exactly what it claims. After you apply the color and it dries, apply the setting balm (feels like lip balm). The color is pretty true and you can liven up the color with the balm ever so often. I tested it overnight and wow, there it still was. It came off simply with foaming face wash. The cost was $9.99, however I think it was true in color, true in claim of long lasting quality, which in time saves you money from having to apply the color so many times throughout the day. This is definitely something I love for summer or anytime of the year!

1. Foaming Hair ColorRegardless of whether we have our

hair colored professionally, we all take advantage of home hair coloring products, even if it is just once in a while. This first product is and does something amazing and exactly what it claims.

Foaming hair coloring products are simply the coolest thing to hit women’s beauty products in a very long time. Gone are the days (as long as they don’t phase it out) of dripping color everywhere and staining skin. The product went on seamlessly and without dripping or staining. This is a must have when you can’t get to your local salon. Check your local beauty counter to see if your favorite brand has their own foaming color line, you’ll love it!

Local Music

In order to truly understand They Stay Dead, a melodic hardcore punk band based here in Edmond, it becomes necessary to understand where each of the members have been, individually, and where they all started. And in order to understand that, some back story is necessary: Edmond, believe it or not, was a major cultural hub in this region in the 1990s. The music scene in general, and specifically the punk scene, was at its most robust at that point in time. There were venues to play at; there were bands willing to play; perhaps most importantly, there was a community. People were devoted to maintaining a sense of cultural identity, not only for themselves, but for up-and-coming generations.

It’s interesting to note that in the Edmond of the present day, there are no music venues within the city limits (and the Jazz Lab does not count). Edmond bands that are based here and that practice here have to go down to Oklahoma City to get exposure, thereby converting them into Oklahoma City bands simply by virtue of mingling with the Oklahoma City music culture. This was not the situation in the 90s.

“It was fun,” Dave Klein, bassist for They Stay Dead, said. “It was kids controlling everything: putting on the shows, booking the bands, renting the out the spaces, usually at the American Legion hall [on Littler and 5th street].”

“Not to mention putting out our own records,” said guitarist Danny Black.

Guitarist and vocalist Matt Owsley said, “I’ve probably got about 30 or 40 seven inches of various Edmond bands, because that’s what we all did, was get in bands and make seven inches and records.”

The members of They Stay Dead themselves were in various 90s Edmond punk bands. The drummer, John Hernandez, was in a pop punk band called The Lunchbunch as early as 1994. They released a demo cassette, as well as a self-released seven inch record over the course of their run as a band.

Bassist Dave Klein has been in several bands, including straightforward hardcore punk act Bi-Products, melodic hardcore band Wretch Like Me and Edmond group Euclid Crash. Guitarist Owsley was also in Euclid Crash, as well as a litany of other bands over the years. In the same tradition, Danny Black, the band’s other guitarist, was in several other bands, including Minutes Too Far, before joining TSD.

The years have been kind for the quartet, and their musical past shines through the three songs they have recorded (not to mention the several songs they play during their set). Their first EP—which can be bought on iTunes or downloaded for free, legally, on their Bandcamp page—is a well-produced, extremely high-paced debut with its feet firmly planted in the kind of melodic hardcore Bad Religion and others have pioneered. There is even a cameo appearance by none other

than News Channel 4’s Lance West on the first track. As it turned out, TSD got stuck in the middle of a police standoff

while they were practicing. “We had band practice one day, and we were practicing in the

city at the time,” Owsley said. “There was a standoff next door to our practice space. But we were practicing and we didn’t know that anything was going on. And we didn’t know that they had evacuated the block, and they couldn’t get a hold of us. They just let us practice for an hour.”

After a while, it was finally communicated to the band that there was a standoff right outside their front door, and they needed to get out of there.

“They just let us play for a while, and finally, when it got through the grapevine that we needed to get out, so we came out and there were machine guns pointed at us. And then it was on the news and we got interviewed,” said Klein.

Later that night, the story hit the airwaves, and Lance West was the one to read the introduction to the story on air.

The other two songs on the album, Transmission and Darkness, are pretty standard but very well-done driving punk songs with outstanding fretwork by Black, Owsley and Klein and precise drumming by Hernandez. It’s a rousing EP (and a rousing band) with links to Edmond’s illustrious punk past, and it hints at the endless possibilities of what a culturally revived Edmond could look like.

Racer Girl:10 Year Old

Allison SlatonIs Faster Than You!

by Chris Hultner

For most people, choosing a sport for their kids to participate in comes down to the options available locally; football, baseball, lacross or soccer are the most common. But for others the decision is based on the sports they are most familiar with. In the case of 10-year old Edmond resident, Allison Slaton and her father Greg, it was racing cars.

For most of his life Greg Slaton raced Sprint Cars thoughout Oklahoma and surrounding states. But once he got married and started having kids, the car racing had to take a backseat. Greg took his years of racing experience and found the perfect job--managing Oklahoma City’s only indoor racing facility, Pole Possition. All the owners and partners of Pole Possition have a background in motorsports and the company fosters a real racing culture.

But there came a point when Greg wanted to get back to the real thing, one way or another. “Once you been around a sport like car racing, it’s hard to step away from it.” Explains Greg, “Your life feels empty if you don’t have that adrenalin rush. I told my wife, Stacy, that either Allison was getting into racing, or I was getting back into it.”

At first Allison wasn’t to keen on the idea of racing cars. From a kids point of view that whole scene can be pretty intimidating. “The first time I brought her car home Allison threw a fit,” says Greg. “She screamed and cried, wouldn’t sit in it and wouldn’t even look at it.”

“Eventually she calmed down and I made a deal with her. All she had to do was drive the car once, and if she didn’t like it, that was it.” Greg explains, “So we loaded up the car and took it down to the Pole Possition parking lot. I gave her some instruction on how to drive it, strapped her in and let her go. When she came in from that first drive she had a grin from ear to ear. That was all it took, she was hooked.”SAFETY FIRST

Allison is now in her second year of racing Kids Sprints. The cars are miniture versions of winged Sprint cars and they race on dirt ovals. The cars in Allison’s class are capable of speeds of 55 miles per hour.

Every sport has an element of danger to it. In fact, according to the CPSC the 10 most dangerous activities for

kids are:1. Basketball2. Bicycling3. Football4. Soccer5. Baseball6. Skateboarding7. Trampoline8. Softball9. Swimming and Diving10. Horseback ridingThe most dangerous sports for girls specifically are

Cheerleading and Gymnastics. Go figure.Over the last 10 years there have been numerous advances

in safety technology in car racing all coming from the highest level in motorsports--NASCAR. Things like improved rollcage design, the Hans device that keeps the drivers head from whiping back and forth, halo’s that prevent side to side motion of the head, improved drivers seats, the five-point-harness and wrist teathers are all designed to keep the driver safe. All of theses devices and products are used in all forms of car racing these days and they go a long way in preventing injuries. IT RUNS IN THE FAMILY

Just liker her Dad, Allison has been bitten by the racing bug. Part of her normal Friday routine now includes getting ready to head out to the race track for a night wheel banging action, while the rest of her friends are going to sleepovers or watching movies with their families.

Allison admits that her favorite part of racing is “beating the boys,” and while she is still considered a beginner, she has beaten a fair amount of them. At thieir usual Friday night hangout, the I-44 Speedway, Allison sits third in points early in the racing season.

She cites Danica Patrick as her favorite racer and can see herself racing cars for the rest of her life. Who know’s how far the sport will take her, but with the support of her family, the sky could be the limit. Go Allison!
