    Introduction

The Waveform Editor is used to directly modify time waveforms. It can splice, crop,

filter, and apply compensation to acceleration, velocity, and displacement

waveforms. It is different than the Post Analysis application in that it does not do

FFTs or any other form of higher analysis.

    Operation and Layout

    User Interface Layout

When the application is first opened, the main user interface is as shown below.

Use the New Projecttoolbar button, or in the Project menu, to create a new

project. By default, a random spectrum signal will be generated. Without creating a

new project, a recently opened project can be opened by clicking on Recent Project

List. Another option is to open a WFE project file from the disk.

    General Options

Line number for spectral analysissets the number of spectral lines. More lines

increase the resolution of frequency data.

Bin Numbersets the resolution of histogram data.

Profile Quantitysets the quantity as acceleration, velocity, displacement, or

    voltage.

Undo Max. Stepsets the number of cached operations for the Undo command

Start Average Framesets the starting frame of the average.

    Compensation

Compensation involves modifying the time stream so it meets certain constraints in

velocity, displacement, or acceleration. Compensation operations include

Acceleration DC Removal, Velocity DC Removal, and High/Low/Band Pass Filter.

After the proper compensation template setup, one button can execute multipleoperations.

Acc. DC (Vel. Slope) Removesubtracts the DC component in the acceleration

waveform. This removes a slope trend from the velocity waveform. It is needed

when the raw data has an offset measurement error.

    13/22

13 Crystal Instruments EDM Waveform Editor Manual

Vel. DC (Disp. Slope) Removesubtracts the DC component in the velocity

waveform. This removes a slope trend from the displacement waveform. It is useful

when acceleration discontinuities are present. An acceleration discontinuity (a

sharp spike in acceleration) will generate an offset in the velocity profile which then

results in a slope in the displacement.

High Pass Filter suppresses low-frequency signals below the specified cutoff

frequency. This method is effective in reducing displacement but may also remove

desirable low frequency energy. The cutoff frequency should be set as low as

possible while still maintaining the displacement requirement.

Low Pass Filtersuppresses high-frequency signals above the specified cutoff

frequency. This does not have a major impact on the displacement or velocity

profile. It is useful in that it will help remove high-frequency components that are

    undesirable in the acceleration waveform.

Band Pass Filter combines a Low-Pass and High-Pass filter.

    Splice Options

The Splice operation is used to minimize boundary discontinuities when two pieces

of data are put together. Once enabled, the chosen Data Window will be applied to

the data array at both ends for the following cases:

A piece of data is appended to the previous segment during the file import

    process.

A piece of data is inserted or pasted into an existing segment.

In the Splice Settings dialog you will be able to define the following: Data Window,

Overlapping, and Number of Windowing Points.

    Data Window

The user can choose different Data Window types to be used in the Splice

    operation.

    None Disables the Splice function

HanningUses a Hanning window during the Splice operation.

Triangle Uses a Triangular window during the Splice operation

Half Sine Uses Half Sine window during the Splice operation

    Overlapping

With OverlappingTwo pieces of data will be put together with Data Window

overlapping. Note that the total length of the profile will be reduced after splicing.

No Overlapping DataWindows are not overlapped. The length of the profile will

    not be altered.

    Number of Windowing Points

The Number of Windowing Pointsallows you to define the length of the Data

Windowby number of points. Typically, the Number of Windowing Pointsis more

    than 128.

    Graphical Editing Operations

There are a number of editing options for on-screen manipulation of imported

waveforms. These operations allow cleaning up of the waveform by deleting

unwanted data segments or changing the sequence of events in a waveform.

    Copy and Delete Selection

After you have selected an interval from the waveform using two cursors, the Copy

and Delete functions become available to you from the Edit menu, by right mouse

clicking on the selected interval, or by using the toolbar buttons. These functions

allow you to copy the selected interval to the clipboard for pasting or simply to

delete the selection from the overall waveform. Note that Copy and Delete

functions apply only to the Profile Window.

    Paste Selection

The Paste function allows you to paste a waveform interval that was previously

copied into the clipboard to a new location on the waveform. Once a waveforminterval has been copied to the clipboard, the Paste to Left and Paste to Right

functions become available to you from the Operating menu, by right mouse

clicking on the selected interval, or by using their respective icons, or by using the

buttons in the Control Panel. Note that Paste functions apply only to the Profile

    Window.

Use a single cursor and scroll to point on the waveform where the clipboard

    contents will be pasted.

Paste to Left pastes the selected waveform interval in the clipboard to the left side

    of the cursor.

Paste to Rightpastes the selected waveform interval in the clipboard to the right

    side of the cursor.

Undogoes back one step and undoes the last action performed.

    Decimation

This operation keeps the signal time length the same and removes every other

sample to reduce the sampling rate by half.

    Rescale

This operation sets the scaling factor to increase or decrease the signal amplitude.

    Signal Display

The Waveform Editor provides displays for simultaneous viewing of profile, velocity,

displacement and Histogram waveforms and Power Spectral Density of the

waveforms. The original, uncompensated, and compensated waveforms may beoverlaid. Also the shaker tolerances may be included to verify the acceptability of

the profile for use on a shaker system. Note that velocity and displacement

waveforms apply only to a profile given in acceleration.

Use theFile Namefield, or the Browse button, to enter the file name for the data

to be imported. Once the Open command is given, the Waveform Editor will

automatically identify the data format and then import the data from the disk file.

The following data formats can be imported: ATFX, ASCII (CSV, TXT), UFF ASCII, UFF,

    Binary, and TDM.

Once the data file has been selected, a few data parameters need to be defined.

Delta T (ms) specifies the sampling rate used for the imported data.

    21/22

21 Crystal Instruments EDM Waveform Editor Manual

Value Unitdefines the engineering units used for the imported data.

Digital Re-samplingallows you to set sampling rate different than the original

sampling rate. If Auto mode is set, the program will determine the best sampling

rate to use. If the waveform sampling rate exactly matches an available sampling

rate of the Crystal Instruments Vibration Control system, digital re-sampling is notrequired. However, if the imported data has a different sampling rate, digital re-

sampling is required to prevent distortion of the waveform shape during output.

Generally you should select Auto for the Sampling Freq (Hz) field.

Digital re-sampling is done internally by a 5th order filter. This high-order filter

ensures against the loss of signal information in the sampling bandwidth during re-

sampling. Be aware that if you choose to digitally re-sample the data at lower rate

than that used to acquire the data, signal aliasing may occur. A better method is to

use the digital low-pass filter and decimate options under Profile Compensation.

Import Methodcontrols how the imported waveform is combined with the existingprofile waveform. Replaceinitializes the waveform buffer and loads the new

waveform.Addsums the new waveform with the existing profile. From/At position

specifies the data point in the profile buffer to begin insertion of the new waveform

    segment.

    Create From Model

This button will create a profile from a mathematical model.
