LSA MEMBER OF THE MONTH — BYRON LUTES
LSA Officers
Byron Lutes has been interested in Locksmithing since the age of 15, and even started a mail order corresponsive course. However, he lost interest about this time do to a big distraction, girls. Byron went on to start and run several businesses over the next 40 odd years. He had a mobile tool business, calling on mechanics, all over the metro Detroit area. After nine years of climbing in and out of that step-van, his knees told him it was time to do something else. Byron started a mobile windshield repair business working for insurance compa-nies and repairing those little stone chips we all get from stones on the road. Next he started an online business with his wife. They both love dogs so they started a line of t- shirts with dog photos and sayings about dogs. They used a website and EBay to grow this business. As to locksmithing, that was always in the back of his mind. A few months ago his sister locked herself out of her car. While watching the road service guy
use a slim jim in a pretty abusive way, his father mentioned that his grandfather had been a locksmith in Detroit before, during, and after the Great Depression, and they always lived comfortably. His father worked summers with his grandfather before going on to medical school. This sparked a resurgence in his long ago interest in locksmithing. Research led him to a course on DVD from Locksmith Video School in Las Vegas. That search also lead to LSA and MAPL. Having completed the DVD course, Byron also started the Foley-Belsaw course and is currently working to complete it as well. He is also a new member of ALOA. Byron says his next step is apprenticing with the 'Pros'. He currently has an interest in all areas and would love to offer his free services to any and all who would like an extra pair of hands on the job or in the shop. Byron commented: "Who knows, maybe it could lead to a part or full time position. The more I am exposed to this business and the GREAT people I have met the more excited I get. Looking forward to meeting and work-ing with all of you." Byron lives with his wife Anne and two dogs, Shannon and Bella Rose, in Canton, Michigan.

LSA Health Tip— by Dr. Christopher Shamass [son of John Shamass, CPL]
F.A.S.T.—When it comes to a stroke, time is lost brain tissue, making it important to recognize the signs of a stroke and get to a hospital fast. The National Stroke Association has developed the acronym F.A.S.T (Face, Arms, Speech, Time) to help with early stroke detection. Face: Does one side of the face droop when the person is asked to smile? Arms: Does one arm drift downward when both arms are raised? Speech: Is speech slurred or strange? Time: If any of these are present call 911 immediately. If given within 3 hours of symptom onset (up to 4.5 hours in some situations) there is an FDA approved Clot-busting medication that may reduce long-term disability in people who suffer from the most common type of stroke and prompt treatment can dramatically change outcomes. As with nearly everything in medicine, risk factor modification is also crucial to preventing strokes before they occur. These include quitting smoking, treating high blood pressure, dia-betes, high cholesterol, increasing activity and reducing obesity. In the scenario of possibly stroke, hopeful watching and waiting may be detrimental to long term outcomes so act FAST and call 911.

Montie Browne of LegalShield will be pre-senting to LSA in December. Montie Browne, CITRMS; is an Independent Associate and Group Benefits Specialist with LegalShield; a 40 year-old company. As a Certified Identity Theft Risk Manage-ment Specialist with LegalShield, Mr. Browne has spent a decade helping business owners identify safe-guards to FTC mandates that are imposing heavy fines and jail time to executives and business owners and brings awareness to the proto-col at no cost to the company. “We’ve seen cases of people dying
from medical-identity-theft related crimes, and the burden is placed
on corporate America due to lack of preparation and awareness to
safeguards.” “The average American doesn’t have equal access to their rights.
If we don’t know what our rights are, it’s the same as not having any
and the small business owner faces daily liability or closure at the
whim of a dissatisfied customer.” says, Browne. With corporate clients including The American Red Cross, De-troit Regional Chamber of Commerce, Lansing Area Federal Credit Union, William Beaumont Hospital, and The Detroit Institute of Arts, Montie Browne will demonstrate how individuals can have equal access to the justice system, proactive identity theft restoration services, and prepare for the unexpected with virtually no cost to the employer. We look forward to his presentation.

This is a hand’s on class that covers the theory and techniques applicable to to-day's’ automotive key generation process. It is for the student who is in need of knowledge on making the keys that they will be programming with transponder equipment. Yes the code services are great when they are available but knowing how to make the keys almost as fast as they can reply is the best, and, knowledge is 'power'. The instructor generates from scratch 99.5% of all the keys he makes so he will be sharing his knowledge of tool and tips on how to make these keys all the time. In the afternoon session locks and tools will be provided to practice the meth-ods taught. In addition there will be a discussion on repairing the most common auto lock failures. The eight-hour class will supply the information, tools and locks that are needed to successfully generate modern automotive keys, including current book recommendations, as well. The class runs from 8 am to 3 pm with an addi-tional 2 hours of "hands on" practice until 5 pm. Be sure to attend this class to in-sure that this lucrative aspect of the locksmith field becomes additional income for you! About the Instructor: Ed Woods, CML, CPS, CAL is Ed is an automotive locksmithing spe-cialist with many years working in the automotive industry. Ed is a consultant to many manu-facturers of automotive locksmithing related tools and equipment and is a Certified ACE In-structor, a long time member of ALOA and has taught automotive locksmithing classes at ALOA conventions and at ACE class events. Ed is the 2006 recipient of the ALOA Continuing Education (ACE) Instructor of the Year award which is presented annually by the ALOA Train-ing Department. ___________________________________________________________________________________
ALOA members who pay the additional $20.00 lab fee may take the PRP Section test L-03 “Domestic Auto” at the end of the class. For those who feel prepared, this test covers general Domestic Auto, of which this class focuses on a select portion of the field. ___________________________________________________________________________________

PRESIDENTIAL PENNINGS—RAY SINAI, CML
Our December meeting and annual Holiday Dinner promises to be an enjoy-able evening of camaraderie and good presentations by visitors, including Mon-tie Browne of LegalShield as well as fellow-members. I will thank, in advance, Aaron Rogers for his role in putting this holiday din-ner together. He has organized the holiday dinner for a number of years now. It is always a fantastic meal. I want to thank all of the sponsors for our holiday dinner. Our friend, Gene Simon, who represents LAB, Jet and Major Manufacturing has again made a generous donation. Also Jerry Roraback (LAB) and our member and newslet-ter photographer, Bob Rovinsky has also sent us a checks. These are three of the many donors who have supported our holiday dinner and donations are still coming in. Thank you to all of you for your support of LSA. Last month, we had Pete Huebner, from The Rayhaven Group. Rayhaven is the local supplier for doors, frames, door hardware, toilet partitions, lockers and many other building products. Rayhaven is located in Southfield, Michigan. If you are not using Rayhaven presently, you need to add some of their products to your repertoire. If you were in attendance, you received a coupon for your next purchase from the Rayhaven Group. Thank you Pete, and thank you for sponsoring the LSA dinner in November. In attendance last month, we also had a visit from Patrick Avery who is the Michigan Sales representative from ESP. Patrick made the long drive from Hol-land, Michigan to be with us. A thank you goes to Patrick who gave us a pres-entation on the products made by the ESP Company. Our new Education Director, Byron Lutes, has hit the ground running. He has already begun by putting together an Automotive Key Generation class. See more information elsewhere in the newsletter and on our web site. Good going Byron ! Another thank you goes to Jeremy Ameen for putting on an educational presentation last month for the membership. Happy Holidays to all, I hope to see you at the December Holiday Meeting and Dinner.
