President’s Message

Dear Beta Chi Sisters,

I saw robins last week, six of them!! These happy harbingers of spring made me smile and gave reassurance that Mother Nature will once again burst forth in all her glory. With spring's renewal of life,

we are reminded to enjoy these beautiful gifts and care for our home, Earth.

With the new-found optimism and strength that spring promises, we recommit to our purposes of DKG. Our optimism is also renewed with the re-al possibility of additional new sisters. Let us share a warm smile to one another and extend a welcoming hand as we offer our friendship to new members.

May God hold you in the palm of his hand,

DKG Love,

Ann and Wendy

The only time we’re singing this year is in April So

dig out our regular songs and be ready to practice in

March. One practice should do it. I will let you know

the day and time for our next rehearsal.

Throwback to Teaching

Eileen Hazel

One day while I was teaching my first grad-ers subtraction, I had manipulatives for them to practice the "take away" process. After do-ing a number of problems using the materi-als, I had them go to the blackboard (yes, it was called a blackboard then) and practice writing and solving some simple subtraction problems. While working on them, one little boy raised his hand. When I called on him he said, " Mrs. Hazel, why do we have to do all the work and you get paid?" Well, that made my day . . . I will NEVER forget him. Any time I think about him and/or the teaching of sub-traction, it brings up a wonderful smile/happy memory.

Co-President Wendy Spoerr welcomed members and guests to the meeting. Chaplain Debbie Davis gave the Invocation. Guests were introduced. Andrea Barber brought Julie Everett. Stephanie Gabbard introduced Toni Murray. Katie Hank introduced Joyce Blythe and Carrie Sinkele. Kathy Morrow brought Rhonda Accordino. Roz Gadd introduced the main speaker for the evening, Dr. Amy Camardese, who is the head of the Department of Education at Westminster College. Dr. Camardese presented her colleague Jane Dean who works at the Tutoring School for children with disabilities. They discussed their project on Mindfulness. The Secretary’s minutes and the Treasurer’s report were both accepted and filed. Linda Falatic, Treasurer, informed the group that dues will now be due by June 30th and that she will begin collecting them at the March meeting. Memberships were closed for Denise Bartholomew and Gretchen Reed. Debbie Davis explained how the money was dispersed from the proceeds from the Chinese Auction in November. We raised $512.00. YSU Scholarship for $150.00. UNICEF School for Africa $50.00. YWCA Young Woman Bright Future was given $25.00 and $100.00 to the Brookfield UMC Food Pantry. The Salvation Army received $100.00. Co-Chair working with Debbie was Carol Hart. President’s Report: The Executive Committee met on January 15th. Katie Hank and Anna Mae Cuchna reported on Membership. Orientation for all new members will be on March 19th at Betty Jean Bahmer’s at 6:00. Wendy gave information about reports that are due to the state. The President’s Report will not be due till summer. We succeeded in obtaining the Membership Challenge and the Gold Key Award. College Student members can join for a fee of $20.00 which is the International fee. It will be determined on the state and local level what charges will be assessed to those members. The state organization name will now be called The Ohio State Organization instead of Alpha Delta State. It is corrected on the newsletter and will be corrected for the booklets. There will be some changes to the rules of Beta Chi. They will be sent out in the March newsletter and will be voted on at either the March or April meeting. There will be discussion in the near future about paying for dinner for guests that are invited to the meetings. Members were asked to think about what they feel should be done for next month’s meeting. There is a change in the location for May’s meeting. It will be held at Enzo’s on Elm Road. We are waiting for information about helping with Jelly Beans for Children’s Rehab. Donna Pate reminded members that we are collecting items for Foster Homes and that toothbrushes and toothpaste are needed.
