February Meeting HighlightsThe February meeting was pretty lively with about 45

members present and lots of good news to report. President Cliff Carlino opened the meeting by asking Don Wagner to introduce any new members but there were none. The minutes of the January meeting were read by Kim Mellies and approved as read. Treasurer Gary Jones gave the financial report saying the moneys set aside from the Round Up proceeds had been sent to CORSA and Jeff Barrett’s Coast to Coast Cruise for the Make-a-Wish foundation. (See page 5.) Gary reminded everyone that he was prepared to accept their $15 if they hadn’t renewed their membership yet. (See page 7 for a list of people who owe dues.)

Irmajean and Don Barta were back from Hawaii, looking pretty chipper and tan. Karl Cozad joyfully reported that Janet was doing well and would be coming home from rehab the following Friday. He thanked everyone for their support and prayers.

Travis Bolton reported that the website is up and still mostly stable, but needs a software update. This would be a good time to overhaul the content.

Gary and Helen Moore reported that all was well with the newsletter. Please continue to send in articles on your projects.

Scott Allison went over the 2015 Social Calendar for 2015. There are lots of events but only a few HACOA events. (See page 2 and the online calendar.) While on the topic of Corvair events, Chris Shade from Hastings, NE gave a presentation promoting the Corvair Track Classic at the Motorsports Park in Hastings on August 28-30. This is an all Corvair event. Charlie Clark spoke up saying that the park is one of the best kept and safest raceways in this region. He, Dick Berger and Ken Ragan have raced and worked this track many times over the years. http://www.shadesclassiccars.com/~shadescc/

Scott Allison announced that Iowa Corvair Enthusiasts will be hosting the Fire and Ice Autocross event in Marshalltown, IA on September 4-5.

Gary Moore and Don Cory are putting together a monthly All Air Cooled Cruise-In and have invited the MO-Kan VW club to participate. Currently the Cruise-In is set for the second Saturday in May at L.C.’s Hamburgers 7612 NW Prairie View

Oil Cooler Tester: Obtain a donor oil cooler adapter-to-case and plug one hole (tap, weld, etc.) while attaching a male air hose connection to the other hole. Add two seals, mount to any cooler and immerse in water while applying 50+ psi.

PVC Seal Drivers: Schedule 40 PVC works great for seal drivers with either a hammer or shop press and I also use it to press on 4-speed synchronizer hubs. Seal driving applications include pressing (out and in) crankshaft main seals in the clutch/converter housings, differential side seals and converter hub seals.

Differential Side Sleeve Tool: The most efficient way to remove stubborn side sleeves is with a donor sleeve modified by welding a HD socket to it for impact wrench application.

Homemade Corvair ToolsSome homemade tools you may use over and over on multiple projects, others you may only use once. It can still be fun being creative, and even that one use can be satisfying. The following are some of the ideas I either borrowed or made up myself. These tools can be made of anything your imagination comes up with. These are just my choices at the time; be creative!

Bezel Nut Sockets: There are several bezel nuts used on both early, FC and late model dashboards. Use a suitable worn out socket, or pick up a cheap one at a swap meet, or use steel stock for the sizes you want. Clamp your material in a vice and get to work with a cut off wheel. If you use steel stock, weld a large washer and nut across the end for tight bezel nut removal.

Front Wheel Bearing Race Removal Tools: Purchase a piece of 3/8” square steel stock at a hardware store and cut lengths as follows: early outer 1 3/8”, early inner 1 ¾”, late outer 1 ½” and late inner 2”. The FC hub has the same bearings as late model. I welded the outer race drivers on to some worn out counter shafts and use them with my shop press; nicer than a hammer and punch. The inner drivers have to be laid inside the hub before using a pusher. These tools are illustrated in the ’61 shop manual.

Positraction Plate Tester: A nut welded to a plate with two drilled holes can be bolted to one yoke while the other yoke is either attached to the axle (in the car) or while one yoke is held in a vice if you have the unit out of the case. Either way, apply your torque wrench to the nut and check the torque required to break the plates loose.

Powerglide Front Pump Cover Removal: Use of a slide hammer is the best approach so I selected a nut that my slide hammer screwed into and welded the nut to a 5/16” steel plate with two drilled holes that line up with the inner cover bolt holes.

Men’s Room Accessories: Pictured are a paper towel holder, toilet paper holder and hand soap stand in my downstairs workingman’s water closet, all made from Corvair “scrap box” leftovers and junk.

Homemade Corvair Tools Continued from page 4By Mike Dawson

Differential Pre-load Measurement: To be able to use my inch pound wrench on the Powerglide pinion shaft, I use a spare governor drive gear with a shock washer and ’66 U-joint bolt welded on one end. For the manual pinion shaft I use a junk 4-speed transmission main shaft with a flange head bolt welded on the small end.

Powerglide Piston Compressor: A push rod guide, two bolts and a Powerglide oil pump gear welded together make an easy to use compressor for removing and installing the clutch piston snap ring.

Drivers For Early and FC Rear Wheel Bearing Overhaul: These bearings usually only take some gentle taps for disassembly and assembly, but for the occasional problem child I made these drivers out of “scrap box” items that fit various races.

Well, as the old adage goes, a picture paints a thousand words. Unfortunately, I didn’t take a single picture while at my first Tuna experience! I’ll chalk it up to a rookie mistake. (Hey, a poor excuse is better than none, right?)

Looking at the weather reports for Friday night/Saturday morning, one would think that we’d have harsh conditions for traveling to the Wichita area. However, all fears were unfounded and Scott Allison’s red Suburban arrived on time with Mike Dawson and Larry Sherwood and without a hiccup. The journey was a little English (foggy) at times but thanks to Scott’s excellent navigational abilities, we made it to Terry’s shop unscathed.

I’ve been to Terry’s shop before and one thing that I like about it is the variety and plethora of Corvairs that flock to it. This time was no exception, as he had the whole “white display” out front (three white late models of varying guise), with several other years

and models sprinkled around including an Ultravan. Adding to this was the fact that Tim Shortle drove in from Durango, Colorado in a ’69 coupe handily beating us KC guys for the long distance award.

At this point in time, I hadn’t even made it into the shop yet! Getting inside it was almost like a scene from Santa’s workshop, bustling with people in several areas doing lots of different tasks. To the right were members working on wheel hubs, to the left were people chatting and munching on cookies and doughnuts, in the middle were people grabbing tools from the rolling tool cabinet. I helped myself to a cup of coffee and started sticking my nose in other people’s business; or more appropriately, calling it “watching others work.” Luckily, I was able to make up somewhat for my slacking by helping one of the Wichita members remove a wheel hub. After this I got distracted by Lyle Ackerman’s 140 heads, which were fresh back from Noland’s. They looked great (maybe a little jealousy here on my part).

Literally moving on, Larry and I went to tour the “compound” but not before I grabbed another cookie. It’s really interesting to see the sheer volume and variety of cars that Terry has, from V8

cars to a 3-door wagon to a Devin that he had towards the back (not to mention his grafted Corvalier and Escorvair); it’s almost like a Corvair museum but luckily he didn’t charge us admission! Around back and in the other building were several Corvairs in different states of being, some of which had donated parts to other cars and some that had yet to do so.

Terry’s metal (siding) shop/garage was impressive, not just the building, but the contents as well. Mark Welty from the Mid-Continent club had his beautiful black Corsa on the lift and behind it was Terry’s Cord, a very nice Corsa and a couple others that I didn’t get a chance to peek at. After that, it was back to the shop for a nice and warm, no, make that HOT, lunch (courtesy of some good but spicy chili!) We stayed a bit longer then headed

out for our journey home.Going to the Tuna

definitely gave me motivation for getting things done on my own car. What I especially like is the fact that there were so many members coming from so many clubs and everyone was so helpful and willing to lend a hand. A big thanks to Terry for opening his shop and tools for all to use. Heck, maybe next time I’ll actually remember to take pictures!

Three white late model Corvairs were on display, a two-door, a four door and a two door with a four-door roof grafted on for something a little different look.

Chris helps Doug Horstman separate a late model rear hub to replace the wheel bearings. Terry's tools include the correct GM ones needed for doing the job.

While Mike Dawson was inside doing a tune-up on Owen Strawn's Ultravan, Larry Sherwood was outside holding the flashlight for Mike.

The President’s Corner By Cliff CarlinoI think I jinxed us last month by writing that our winter has been pretty good this year. As I write this message, the weather forecast is for the biggest storm of the season so far. Sorry about that, I’ll try not to jinx us again. The good news is that spring is just three weeks away! The club social calendar is beginning to fill in, so if you have an idea for a social event get with our able bodied social chair Scott Allison to see what dates would work out the best for you.I would like to remind everyone that the deadline for signing up and payment is March 14 for the trip to the Shatto dairy farm on April 18. If you will be at the March meeting that would be the time to pay, or if you can’t make it to the meeting a check can be mailed to the club at HACOA c/o Mike Dawson, 16001 Oakland, Belton, 64012.See you at the meeting,Cliff
