GRADE 5 REFLECTI ON THEIR END OF UNIT ACTIVITY: “THE MALL”
T he Grade 5 students, in an effort to further understand the idea of economic systems, wanted to
participate in an activity to literally learn how to plan and execute a business. They had to do a lot
of work researching the interests of their potential clients, the laws of supply and demand and
budgeting. We are thankful to one and all; PYP teachers, all the students and the subordinate staff for all
their support! The event was a huge success!
―We enjoyed the mall a lot;the buying and selling of goods and services. I was selling magnets and I
made a huge profit!‖ - Kinjal
―The main intension of the mall idea was to utilize what we had learned about business and economic
systems. I had fun doing it and I realized just how much work shopkeepers do! I loved every bit of it!‖
Nitika
―I loved the action for our UOI which was introducing a business and selling goods or services to
students and teachers. I now know how to attract customers and what business people do to sell their
product. It was fun learning!‖ - Khushi
―We had a mall as end of UOI activity, there were foods, drinks, bands, crafts and chocolates. My stall
was for drinks and I had so much fun selling!‖ - Darshil
―At the mall, I was selling greeting cards and lots of people came and I made so much money! People
even wanted to buy my stall‘s decorations. It was an amazing experience!‖ - Shauna
―Our class had a mall and I was painting nails. The whole idea was a huge success and it was fun! I
loved it and wish we could do it again!‖ - Janhavi
ENTER THE GRADE 5 MALL!!!!!!
A s I entered the innovative mall of the Grade 5 UOI
project, I was surrounded with gleaming ideas that
invited me to see what they have in store! Sahej’
mohito, Riya’s fun filled photo stall and so much more! I know
at the end of it, such exhibitions are indeed educational! As
Ms. Beth, the Grade 5 Home room Teacher was very kind to
tell me about the whole idea behind this mall was about the
kids‘ understanding about economics and marketing. Their
UOI being on economics, their research work was
co mmendab l y
detailed and her students had to research about what
adolescents are attracted to these days! I understood that
this was not the amateur research which we usually do
with just a few clicks on our computers. But, his was a
time consuming yet professional way of researching in
marketing and economics! I could relate it to my
Checkpoint Reader in English; a topic on advertising! I
was surrounded with variety of ‗shops and ideas‘. It was a
real mall experience; if in a spa mood, I would get a fancy
manicure by Jhanvi’s nail art stall or even click funny
photos with my friends! Suddenly, I heard my stomach
growl! I saw the mouthwatering brownies, chocolates,
cakes and wanted to gulp it all down with a virgin
mohito! I am sure this really gets wide smiles on my
readers‘ faces!
Hats off to all our juniors.. organizers in Grade 5; not to
forget the teacher who helped in the innovative making.
Such talented juniors... what wonders you have made!
We are proud to welcome you to the MYP.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
O n the 15th of February students of IBDP went on a trip to Habitat
for Humanity in Karjat. Habitat for humanity is an NGO which
established itself in India 1983. This organization helps rebuild
homes for people affected by natural calamities. They helped improve
housing and sanitation for many families all over India and we were
taken to Karjat to help them build houses in one of the villages.
We set out to the site at 7 am and reached our destination at around 10
am. The ride to the site was enjoyable and we were all very excited to
take part in making a change in those people‘s lives. Upon our arrival, we
discovered that they had already built quite a few houses. Another school and
a few other citizens from Mumbai were there to volunteer. We were all then
taken to a tent where we were briefed on the activities we were to complete.
The two activities that were to be performed on that day were making
foundation and painting a house. Our group, which consisted of 15 people,
split into two groups and each group headed to their respective sites. I chose
to paint the house and we were briefed on how the job was to be done. We all
picked different sides of the house and started painting. We painted the house
for nearly 5 hours and some of the students from the foundation site joined us
towards the end. In 5 hours, we managed to complete the job. We had breaks
in between and surprisingly, music being played on speakers that made our
job more enjoyable.
The whole experience was an enjoyable and enriching one as we all got to
know about the poor conditions the people were living in and were able to
help make a difference in their lives. We also communicated with some of
the villagers and they were all very friendly and nice. In the process of
painting the house, some of us got paints on ourselves and at the end of the
day, we were all covered head to toe in fluorescent green. It was a laughable
sight. Although we would‘ve liked to stay longer, we had to leave early on
account of rains. We left Karjat exhausted but with a big smile on our faces.

IBDP 2
W e the students of IBDP from RBK went to Karjat to a mission for
habitat for humanity. It was a unique experience, for all the students
who participated. We started off at 6:30 in the morning for karjat
and on reaching, we were greeted in a tent where we were given the necessary
instructions and materials required for working well. There were two main
jobs which the students could opt for; laying the foundation for a house and
the exterior paint job. A lot of students opted for painting and some of the
braver souls decided to attempt laying the foundation to a house. It was hard
work and it took a lot of dedication to do the work properly. But the feeling of
doing something for someone else fueled our desire to work more. After a
thorough session of hard work we had a hearty lunch and were given our
certificates and then proceeded to the bus and started the long journey back
home. This may have been a small mission, but every small effort helps and
we look forward to going back and helping more people yet make a home for
them.

IBDP TEACHERS’ PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
T oday we live in the world where the young generation is beyond the shackles of the conventional
education system; their young and enthusiastic mind wants to go beyond the realms of rote
learning system. IB Diploma Program is a course of study that challenges young brains to think
creatively and explore their boundaries of imagination. Hence, not only the students but also the teachers of
IBDP are expected to be life long learners. They need to keep exploring new ideas, evolve their teaching
strategies and develop new resources. The IB faculty would need to interact with teachers from different
IB schools for exchange of resources. This kind of platform is provided by SAIBSA (South Asian
International Baccalaureate Schools‘ Association) on annual basis.
All the teachers from IBDP visited Mainadevi Bajaj International School on 15h February 2014 for
attending subject specific sessions from all the six groups of IBDP. These were conducted by experts from
the subject area. A common session on career counseling highlighted the role a teacher plays in students‘
life in deciding their career path. It also elaborated on the support that a teacher can provide for subject
selection. Teachers later went ahead with their subject specific meetings. It turned out to be extremely
helpful to our teachers. The guidance provided by the experts has equipped our teachers with better
understanding of the requirements of the DP.
