I also want to, in a very special way, give a big THANK YOU to Georges Lauzon whom I found as secretary on the then Zambia Provincial team in 2006 and from whom I have learnt a lot. Georges, you are great! I am sure that all the confreres in the province do appreciate your constant availability for efficient service in the Province. Georges is this July moving on to FENZA-Lusaka, for a new ministry in the documentation department of the center. We shall miss you a lot Georges! This edition of the Motomoto Echo gives non-confidential news from the last Provincial Council meeting. It aims at informing you on some decisions and orientations that were made in the province. This goes to show that the SAP journey has not yet ended. Yes, the province goes on! As the Echo comes to you, so do the ballots to elect new councillors on the 2012-2015 Provincial Council. I rely on all the confreres appointed to the SAP for yet another dedicated and vibrant Provincial Council. We have kick-started the SAP; now it is time to put it in the 2 nd /3 rd gear – to move onwards. The new Provincial Council will be expected to do just that. All this is for the sole purpose that the vision in our 2010 Chapter and Post-Capitular Acts becomes a reality. I call upon everybody on the new Provincial Council (and indeed all the confreres in the province) to familiarize themselves with the SAP statutes and the PCA. Through these two documents we all together shall be able to get what is best for ourselves, for our province, our society and indeed for the southern part of Africa. I end by wishing everybody in the province and beyond a happy reading of this issue of the Motomoto Echo. May the good Lord continue to bless and guide you. Fraternally. June 2012, No 11

The April 2012 Provincial Council meeting was the last for the outgoing councillors. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each member of this council. I can confidently say that it was because of your dedication to the society that we were able to remain united and focused in establishing a totally new province of SAP. If today we can talk of the SAP, it is because of your desire and willingness to implement our decisions in and outside the council. Thank you very much.

We have kick-started the SAP; now it is time to put it in the 2nd/3rd gear – to move onwards.

News from the SAP Provincial Council meeting which took place from the 17th till the 20th April in Woodlands with 12 participants representing all the Sectors.

Antislavery Campaign Anniversary The PC unanimously commissions Claudio Zuccala to start working on the project elaborated at the March 2012 JPIC-ED Session which took place in Kasisi, Zambia. The objective is to come up with a well-defined action plan by September for the Antislavery Campaign Anniversary which will end in October 2013. This plan includes a bus journey through three countries; Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique. The PC has recommended setting up core groups with Justice&Peace representatives in order to facilitate the success of this ambitious project.

Requests from the JPIC-ED Session in Kasisi The PC recommended bringing the six points, which were presented by the March JPIC-ED Session, to the level of each community and Sector for further discussion. Reports from each Sector are to be compiled and analysed at the next PC meeting in November. Those points include: appointment policy, intervention at early sign of a crisis, peace and reconciliation in our communities, tendency of individualism and secrecy, solidarity, transparency and openness in projects and initiatives, and appointment of a fundraiser for the Province. More details will soon be distributed among each community.

Research project As a follow up of Africae Munus, FENZA and Kungoni Centres were asked to provide questionnaires on reconciliation and integrity of creation to be distributed among local and parish groups. Once completed, the answers will be analysed by the Centres and redistributed. The PC encourages all the communities to participate.

South Africa The official handing over of Orange Farm took place on April 15 after fifteen years or presence. The people understood the reasons why we are moving out. They also expressed great appreciation for what we have done over those years. Following the robbery which took place on the 12th February at Orange Farm, a security assessment, approved by Rome, was conducted in Orange Farm, Lenasia, Extension 10 and Edenglen.

A discussion is foreseen with the Archbishop Wilfrid Cardinal Napier to identify a Parish which we could take on as a provincial commitment. The official opening of the new house at Merrivale will take place on the 25th August with the presence of our Superior General, Richard Baawobr.

Mozambique The Sector is willing to appoint a confrere to facilitate the coming of the Antislavery Campaign Anniversary caravan tour. A unanimous decision was taken at the level of the Sector to find a parish within the diocese of Tete. Geographically close to Malawi and Zambia, Tete is an emerging town where encounter with various religions and other Christian denomination is possible. Moreover, the diocese is in need of personnel while the new Bishop already expressed interest. The new parish will be within the range of 30 km from Tete and could be used as the starting point for setting up a Centre of JPIC-ED/Media and a First Phase Centre. The PC approved this vision with great interest.

Malawi We have four confreres who have left or are leaving this year: Georg Messer May 25; Peter Mateso June 20; André Bilodeau June 22; and Jean-Marie Hougardy June 25. There was the silver jubilee of Michael Mawelera on May 25 at Balaka. At Kanengo, Michel Sanou is now Parish Priest of St. Francis Parish and is gradually working part time at CfSC, Moïse Yédédié moved to Chezi Parish and Peter Mateso is getting ready to go for studies. Together with Jean Arnaud and the stagiaire Hervé Tougma, we have a new community at Chezi with the coming of Moïse Yédédié and Filianus Ekka. Three young confreres are active in Mua fulfilling a plan elaborated years ago. A transition committee is slowly coming up at Kungoni Centre, as requested by the PC in November 2011. The community at the Sector House is stable and provides valuable service to many people.

Zambia North The Sector is experiencing instability because of having too few confreres between 40 and 70 years old available for new appointments. Zambia South Henk van Kessel celebrated his 60th anniversary of priesthood in May 2012. A memorandum of understanding is being signed between SAP and the diocese of Chipata for a mixed community at Lumimba. The community of Kabwata is split into two setups, meaning Kabwata Parish and the newly opened outstation called St.Lawrence which is expected to become a full Parish by the end of the year.

New single Sector of Zambia Because of the size of the new Sector, the PC approves the proposal of having a full time Sector Delegate who is assisted by two Councillors, both becoming members of the PC. A full Sector meeting will take place every two years with community representatives meetings twice a year. The PC recommends also Claudio Zuccala to be a stagiaire supervisor together with Camille Konkobo.

Formation The PC proposes to have the Vocation promoters’ bi-annual meeting in Balaka. As for the Lechaptois First Phase Centre in Balaka:

o Michael Mawelera is the financial administrator at the Inter-Congregational Institute (ICI) till the end of this academic year. There is a need to clarify his job description and his contract with the Institute.

o The Rector and the Dean of studies are finishing their mandates at the end of this academic year. Discussions are underway to make the Dean becoming the new Rector while Robert Tebri could replace the Dean of studies.

o The affiliation with the Catholic University is completed. With it, there will be a possibility to get a degree course. This possibility will necessitate a fourth year of study.

o Our presence in ICI is growing because of being more numerous. Our involvement in various activities is appreciated. Out of 110 students, ours number 34, including six from Mozambique.

o Some books given by Arusha will soon upgrade the library. o There is a good spirit among students. Their standard of English is good. Because of the significant

increase of the cost of living, their pocket money allowance was raised from 100 $ to 150 $ a year. o There is an urgent need for a new bore hole.

Recommendations of the PC: To make a research about insurance options for our properties and to ask all the confreres to make use of the EMI forms each time they go to a clinic, a hospital and pharmacy.

Home of hope

Home of Hope is a Centre which gives shelter to the homeless boys that are found on the streets of Lusaka in order to rescue them from the vicious circle of homelessness: street-drugs-abuse-crime. It has become a half-way home with the purpose of re-integrating those children back in their families and main stream society.

Statistics show that 90 % of street children are boys. The girls are referred to other NGOs with a similar outreach program. The Centre was founded in 1998 by the Catholic Women’s League of Lusaka at the request of the then Archbishop of Lusaka R.R. Medardo Mazombwe. The League is still in charge of advocacy, sourcing funds and development of the premises as well as its running costs.

Being within its boundaries, the Catholic Parish of Good Shepherd was involved from the very beginning of the Centre. The first basic structures were built within the property of St. Lawrence Community Centre under the supervision of the Missionaries of Africa.

Page 7: Editorial - WordPress.com...Christopher Chileshe Editorial. 2 ... Richard Baawobr. Mozambique The Sector is willing to appoint a confrere to facilitate the coming of the Antislavery

In 2011, Home of Hope admitted 68 homeless boys from whom 37 of them ran away at one point or another. Most of them came back and were readmitted. A total of 24 boys were successfully reintegrated to their families while others are still under the care of the Centre by providing them with educational support.

Some children were very young. Two of them were 6 years old, one 8 and several boys within the range from 9 to 11 years old. Two brothers came from Ethiopia and two young ones from DRC/Congo.

The Centre works closely with Social Services (DSWO), Child Protection Unit of Zambia Police (CPU) and International Organization for Migrants (IOM). As a joint effort, Home of Hope has managed to take two cases (assault and child sexual abuse) to the Court of Law.

The year 2011 was marked by many types of violence among the population of homeless youth and children in Lusaka. Among these, the most common were assaults. But cases of murder, child sexual abuse, abortion and suicide were also registered. At various moments, the Centre was instrumental in transporting dead children to the Lusaka Mortuary, obtaining legal documentation and informing relatives of the deceased when possible.

At the moment Home of Hope employs four teachers. Six dormitories are sheltering 48 boys. Our confrere Jacek Rakowski is involved at the Centre for many years now. Child protection policy guidelines are in place for the wellbeing of the children as much as for the staff of the Centre.

Handouts keep the homeless children longer on the street.

Handouts bring more children to the street.

News from South Africa

Dear Confreres, Yesterday we had a four and a half hour ceremony that was to bid farewell to the Missionaries of Africa in Orange Far; Didier Lemaire, Jean-Paul Cirhakarhula and Thomas Pouya and welcomed two newly appointed diocesan priests. The Archbishop officiated and left after the Mass that was followed by 17 speeches. The farewell aspect far outweighed the welcome but was very well done. It was humbling to hear how much the Archbishop, the Archdiocese and the good people of Orange Farm really appreciated all that was done for them over the past 18 years. So many in the congregation were sporting T shirts with the faces of all the Missionaries of Africa who has worked in Orange Farm printed on a map of Africa with the words "We are Apostles. Nothing but Apostles." on the back. Our Confreres were showered with presents and I was pleased to see Thomas was also included. This was a celebration of joy. Tinged as it was with the regret that we did have to move on. The two diocesan priests seemed very competent and have been living with our Confreres since Christmas. I think all will agree that this has been a very good initiative and a very good transition. Hopefully now we can get a suitable place in KwaZulu-Natal as near to Merrivale as possible. With best wishes, Seán O’Leary

News from Mozambique

Five candidates were sent to Zambia on the 30th May to stay with the other candidates at Kolibo Center, Serenje. They came by bus through Zimbabwe. This is a great adventure for them but they look happy, even though they are a bit shy. They might join the Congolese group coming to Lusaka in July for their English lessons.
