pring is in the air, thebirds are busy buildingtheir nests and the bestnews is that at last thenew bowling season is

starting.

First of all, I welcome all the newbowlers to our club; I am sure ourmembers will give them all the as-sistance and encouragement thatis required to ensure they settle inand enjoy their journey at NarreWarren Bowls Club.

We have some members who, atthis point in time, are unfortu-nately not experiencing the bestof health; I wish them a speedyrecovery and encourage them, whenever possible, to come to theclub and enjoy the fellowship asthere are no strangers at our club- only friends.

Unfortunately, some membershave retired from bowls, and oth-ers decided to bowl at alternativeclubs. I wish them well, whatevertheir reason, for moving on.

The Board has been very active inits endeavour to give the club amore modern appearance; as all ofyou would have noticed, our clubcolours are now prominent.

From all reports, our OpeningDay was judged a success, but aswe are well aware, any event doesnot just happen; I must thank ourSecretary, Reg, for the tremen-dous effort he put in to ensureeverything not only went well but, importantly, on time.

While in attendance at our Open-ing Day, Cr Sam Aziz announcedthat Council funding for our bar-becue gazebo was approved; con-struction is expected tocommence soon.

To Ian and his committee (bar,

greens and surrounds) a big thankyou; the presentation was to yourusual excellent standard.

In discussion with Ian regardinggreen B, it is to be hoped it willbe ready to play on early in thepennant season.

To Judy and her catering commit-tee, as I said on Opening Day,leave it to Judy and her committeeand it will be to the standard ex-pected of our club; my personalthanks, ladies - an excellent job, well done.

Our bowls committee has estab-lished an excellent program forthis season, and its success is de-pendent on your support.

I believe Arthur Scheurer shouldbe commended for his commit-ment to coaching at the club; thenumber of members attending hissessions can only benefit thebowlers and the club in general.

Again our social committee hasbeen busy programming events -their success is again up to thesupport of members.

Last, but not least, our selectors -this dedicated committee spendshours to ensure what is best forthe club and the bowling members- they deserve your full support.

I believe we have an excellentcartel of hard-working commit-tees which believe in our club andstrive for its success.

There is still much to do at theclub, and I implore all of you(club members) to get behind therelevant committees and givethem your full support.

To each and every one of you, Iwish you good bowling for season2014/15

Secretary’s ReportIIwould like to reflect on what happened in your club

over the past several months, starting with thePresentation Breakfast and AGM.

Presentation BreakfastOn 4 May 2014, approximately 60 members were in atten-dance, and the catering and bar committees, as usual, livedup to their high standards. The members later welcomedthe club champions and other winners for season 2013/14,who received their hard-earned trophies.

AGMAll of the above stayed, and several members who couldnot attend the breakfast made the numbers for our AGMone of the best attended for some time, and outgoingPresident Peter Rouse, Secretary and Treasurer all pre-sented their reports. The Secretary presented a special res-olution for Life Membership be conferred on members DotFarrell and Gordon Lowry, and the members all voted infavour. This was followed by the election of the new OfficeBearers for 2014/15, and incoming President Kerry Daviswas welcomed to the chair by the members.

RSAOn 4 June, a Responsible Serving of Alcohol course was con-ducted at the club rooms, and the following members at-tended and passed: Wilma and Gordon Haringsma, MickiHorton and Reg Johnstone. These extra hands, hopefully, will ease the workload on Ian Brotherton and the BarCommittee.

JulyCouncil approved a grant to erect a Centenary Verandahover the barbecue area, and we expect this to becompleted by Christmas.

AugustOpening Day on 30 August was a great success, startingwith entertainment by singer Daryl Hayward, who offeredhis services free with the hope of future engagements, andhe was well received by all the members and guests.

The day was greatly supported by all members, with morethan 90 in attendance for the opening of the greens, fol-lowed by bowls, then afternoon tea with our official guestsJudith Graley, State Member for Narre Warren South, LukeDonnellan, State Member for Narre Warren North, SamAziz, Springfield Ward Councillor, City of Casey, who toldmembers about Council’s grant for the cover over thebarbecue area.

Thank you to the ladies for the afternoon tea; it was up toyour usual great standard.

The Greens and Surrounds, Ian and the Bar Committee,

along with others –well done.

The outside paintingof sheds, seats andother areas is now fi-nalised, and theeffect on the place is

like a breath of freshair, so please do notput your bags on theseats.

On behalf of the club,I attended a functionorganised by Deputy Mayor Cr Stapledon and VictorianState Government for a presentation by the Minister forCrime Prevention of a ‘graffiti removal kit’ to be kept at ourclub. Hopefully, we will never have to use it. Many thanksto Amanda Stapledon.

Unfortunately the club has lost several members this year,to either retirement or going to another club for variousreasons, namely: Graeme Manifold, Brad Potter, LeonBrown, John Hickman, Jack Scanlon, John Schwennesen,Alan McGann, Neville Bell, Ken Harrison, Alister White,Russell Green, Shannon Micallef, Brenda and StuartProctor, Marcel Duval, Ralph Devonshire and Alan Mark.

On the other side, we welcome the following new membersto our club: Wilma and Iain Stevenson, Arthur Scheurer,Peter Lister, Ian and Keryn McCluskey, Peter and MarionGroom, Stan and Zade Bulmer, Travis Moore, CallumOsbourne, Jack Castricum, Steven Boyd and Alan Dawson.

Also joining as social members were Lyn Davis and MichelleMoore, and there were several members who transferredfrom full to social membership.

With any sort of luck, we should have the website up andrunning before Christmas, as several members have en-quired at what stage it is – more later.

Also, the club is now part of the new Casey Bowls Division, but remains within the Peninsula Bowls Region. This newdivision is made up of the following Clubs: Carrum, Cran-bourne, Cranbourne RSL, Cardinia Waters, Hampton Park,Narre Warren and Pakenham. The major office bearers for2014/15 are: President, Reg Johnstone and Secretary, PeterBowman, both from Narre Warren Bowls Club. The objectof the new division is to run our own qualifying rounds forstate titles, which will cut down travel for these events, andthis has already been shown by the number of entries re-ceived to date. It also allows the above clubs to voice con-cerns raised by members at club level on bowls andadministration problems to region, with a better voice thanwas under the previous setup.

Wishing all a successful 2014/15 season.

Reg Johnstone, Secretary NWBC.

What a great day! Beautifulweather, a good turnout,a very good entertainer,

yummy food and lovely guests.

The guest table comprised GeoffMiller, Peter Bowman, JudithGrayley, Kerry Davis, Sam Aziz,Luke Donnellan and Reg John-stone. Unfortunately, SandraLapham was unable to attend due toill health. Another honoured guestwas Life Member, Gordon Lowry. Also coping with ill-health on theday was our other Life Member, DotFarrell. The club wishes both theseladies a speedy recovery.

Local entertainer Darrel Heywardplayed keyboard and sang all day,and really helped the atmosphere. Ifanyone is looking for some entertain-ment at their next function, Darrel iscertainly the one to book.

For a change at such functions, thespeeches were succinct, informativeand entertaining, without all the chestbeating usually associated withpoliticians. We are lucky to have sucha good mob in our area; they all dotheir best for the club, and it is reallyappreciated.

As usual, Judy Naughton and hercrew put on a mouth-wateringspread, which disappeared at aspeedy rate. Fortunately, they knowus of old, and ensured there wasplenty.

I generally like to give credit byname, but there were so many mem-bers who put in their time in so manyways, I know I would miss someoneout. So, this time, I shall just say avery grateful thank you to all helped, both inside and out.

Selection

Numbers have beengood for practicematches and have

been very competitive, which looks encouraging forthe coming season.

The selection committee hasdecided to go with the skip ticksystem this year and the thirds,in conjunction with lead andsecond, will assess the skips.

If you are unavailable for anygames during the year pleasemake sure you put your nameon the Tuesday or Saturday listson the NOTICE BOARD whichwill make it a lot easier forselection.

If anyone has a problem withselection, don’t stress over it;come and talk with us onTuesdays at approximately3.30pm, when we pick thesides. You are always welcome.

Good luck to all teams for thecoming season.Norm Hosmer– Chairman of SelectorsTodayat 10:31 AM

After calling formembers tohelp with a

bit of cleaning before theopening of the season, it was

disappointing to have onlyeight people turn up to help.

A big thank you to Eric Luyters,Janice Moran, Trish Miller,

Rudi Pompe, John andPam Uren, Ethel van Maanen and Margo Worsley whohelped with the back-breaking task of cleaning the very

dirty chairs. I think we were all surprised – once westarted scrubbing – just how dirty they were.

We then moved in to the kitchen and, although we didn’tget all the cupboards cleaned and the stocktake finished,

we did get those used more frequently (the ones withthe cups, mugs, sugar basins and teapots etc) done. If the

council turns upanytime soon we’ll certainly pass inspection!!!

Thank you also to Lyn Davis who had a clean-up and“renovation” of the waste-paper baskets in the ladies’

loos. Another case of not realisinghow grubby things were until they were cleaned.

– Judy Naughton, Catering Officer

Thanks

Although the members who worked in the morning to providethe afternoon tea were thanked on the day, I would also like

to say thanks.

I would also like to thank those members who helped cleartables, helped with the dishes took home and laundered thetablecloths and the many teatowels used on the day. It was

greatly appreciated.

Being a relatively new member of the clubhas allowed me to observe members’ atti-tude and club workings towards bowling

and bowls competitions.

After you have read this I am sure there will besome who will ignore me as being an irrelevantknow it all, or someone wanting to change theirworld; but there may be a few who can see thebenefits for the club.

This club has been very successful over the pastfew years, and the basis of this of segment is tohelp improve and have the club move forward, orat least maintain its current position.

My observation is that this club has a number ofvery good bowlers, and an even greater numberof potentially very good bowlers. But, as with allgood resources, there is always a hidden down-side, better known as PRACTICE.

Lawn bowls is, in essence, a very simple game toplay, with a very simple mechanical action: findthe correct bowling line to suit your bowls, take anormal walking step forward and, with a smoothpendulum-swinging action of the arm, deliver thebowl with the appropriate force, and you will ar-rive at the jack. Seems simple, it is simple, but you

need to practise this to reach a higher level ofachievement.

It should be noted that playing two or three timesa week in various competitions is not consideredpractice and, really, is of no benefit to improvingyour ability or capability to play consistent bowls

New word to be introduced to all bowls conver-sations: PRACTICEl
