2020 April Musings of a Muddled Mind
Stops I woke up this morning thinking about stops…not the kind you can get arrested
for if you don’t use them but about how light works for or against you in
photography (Don’t think too hard about this, I very often wake up thinking
about weird stuff…Like why did they kill off Data on Star Trek). After years
of getting my film back from Fuji or whoever and on looking at the images I
say, what the $^&%*&^ is that? They are too light (or dark) to see anything
for sure. I can maybe make out a dinosaur on one (I have never taken a
dinosaur photo in my life) but if it looks like one then I will not argue with the
facts, that’s what it is. I can put it in the album with a little label under it
that says “Dinosaur”. Everyone understands that when photographing big
Brown Bears or Dinosaurs you have to make snap decisions and get what you
can.
5
Well anyway, I finally started looking at the magic triad that makes well
exposed and beautiful images. It took me that many years to catch up with
what every inexpensive point and shoot knows already…moving one leg of the
light triangle changes everything and can only be compensated for by moving
one of the other legs the same amount in the opposite direction or moving both
of the other legs about half the amount. It’s just like magic, you come out
with the same amount of light. The bottom line is that if your histogram is
sad and huddled at the top or bottom of your chart you may have a problem.
Several methods will work to help get your histogram looking healthier. If it
huddles on the left, open up a stop or two or run your shutter a little slower
or put your magic sensor to a higher number, and try again. Do the reverse
if it huddles on the right. It is a known fact that you expose for the
highlights and if the dynamic range is a little too much for the camera to
cover, you can work the darks out in post processing. Blown out means gone,
nada, zip, nothing you can do to get it back, but shadows can be opened up to
draw out detail. Now my dinosaurs look much better and I am a happy
camper.
This subject actually gets a lot deeper so if you want even better dinosaurs
here is a link that does a good and basic job of making it all look simple (I
wish). https://photographylife.com/what-are-exposure-stops-in-photography
And if you don’t have time or desire to look up the link…here are a few charts
to show the standard stop settings…each chart being one leg of the triad.

Spring will soon be here and the birds will sing again. Don’t give in to
claustrophobia. Get out there and shoot a dinosaur or two…Dick

Pony Village OCPA Show and Sale - April 16 -19
Bonnie Smith is managing the schedule for the show. We will hang the show on April 15th.
Members who display prints must work a shift during the show or arrange for coverage if
they aren’t available to sit. The Bandon Photo Club will join us for this spring’s show.
Coos County Fair Update: Archie Davenport will be the judge for the fair this year. We don’t
know if Aaron’s will be helping out this year. Carol and Don will check with them. The
Bandon Club has volunteered to work with OCPA to support the photography exhibit during
the Fair.
Potential Speaker
Jon Pedersen has volunteered to speak to the club without charging a fee. See
jonpedersen.com for samples of his work. Carol will work with Jon to identify a date.
Once a date is set, we notify OCPA members and we also invite the Bandon Club.
Use of the North Bend Senior Center:
Given the identification of the COVID- 19 in Oregon, we may need to work with the Senior
Center to mitigate exposure risk for others who use this facility. One step we could take would
be to wipe down tables and chairs after our meetings.
