KAUST would like all Self-Directed Groups to try and
use local vendors to procure their equipment if it is possible.
KAUST Security Services wishes to inform members of the community that lost and found items [not pets] are
held in the Campus Security Office located on Discovery Walk, Ibn Sina Building (Building 3) Level 2. Community members who wish to determine if any particular item belonging to them has been handed in should contact Tel:
808-2572 or visit the office personally. A security officer will be happy to assist with inquiries and to ensure that items are
returned to their rightful owners.
Pet owners: “I want to warn pet owners of the sticky
glue adhesive they are putting in the cracks of driveways and sidewalks. My old dog stepped in some and it smelled so
toxic. I spent an hour cutting out his hair, but it was hard to do it between the toes. Warm vegetable oil can also help. I’m afraid
if the animal tries to lick it off, it will be poisoned.”
Caretaker Authorization Form: If you plan to be away
from your accommodation in the community for an extended
time due to vacation, business trip or other reason, you may
assign a Caretaker to occupy your house during the your absence.
Alternatively, you may leave your accommodation unoccupied
and locked and deposit the keys with a custodian. The Custodian will make periodic checks on the premises.
The Caretaker Authorization Form provides details about the procedure and may be downloaded from the Document Center.
Be on the lookout for one ornery sweet kitty – ChiChi Taylor is on the loose – again! This little beauty is a
bit skittish with strangers, has a little bell and blue collar around
her neck and is greatly missed by her family, Alix and Gary
Taylor. If you happen to spot this wandering furball, please be
gentle with her and call Alix at 0508589481. The name tag
on kitty’s collar will identify her as ChiChi Taylor, so no mistaking her.

Beginners’ Golf Coaching Clinic
Launching on Wednesday, May 5th and running every Wednesday between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm thereafter, the Safaa Golf Club is offering a Beginners Coaching Clinic. Safaa‟s resident PGA Professionals will be on hand to teach the basics and fundamentals of the golf swing to give you the perfect platform to start your golfing career!
All KAUST residents are welcome. The one-hour group coaching sessions will be targeted at complete beginners or those with little experience. The concept is to teach the basics starting with grip, posture and golf set-up and then allow you to experiment under the supervision of the professionals.
There is no charge for the coaching sessions and all equipment will be provided on the evening. We suggest your wear suitable footwear; either golf shoes or sports trainers are fine. There is no need to sign up for the event in advance. Please ensure you bring your KAUST ID to sign in!
After the golf clinic there will be a BBQ arranged by our restaurant. This will be by reservation and can be booked by calling 808-6161.
We look forward to welcoming you to Safaa Golf Club.

Reminder: “Artists of KAUST” entries due by Wednesday at noon
KAUST ID-holders are invited to submit their original works of visual art for display in the KAUST Library, located on the University quad. The deadline for entries is noon on Wednesday, May 5, 2010. To submit works, phone Brian George at 808-3626 (mobile 054 682 1231) or e-mail [email protected] and schedule a time to deliver your work and fill out the submission forms. The exhibition will open with a reception on May 15 from 5:00-7:00 pm and will run until May 26. KAUST Library offers an inspiring surrounding to display works of art and introduce them to the many people who visit the library and its café each day. Examples of art works that are sought for inclusion in the exhibit include paintings, photography, fabric art, jewelry, sculpture and ceramics. A committee made up of community members will review all exhibition material. Final acceptance for the exhibit is contingent upon the review of the committee. The committee reserves the right to limit the number of pieces submitted by an individual. Submissions must be display-ready (the Library will not take care of printing or framing costs, just the display logistics). The exhibit is being organized jointly by the KAUST Office of the Arts and KAUST Library.
Ponderings
Mental health and well-being.
Okay, I understand the direct link between how I feel and how much sleep I have had, but what else about my life affects my mental health and well-being?
Sleep Exercise
Diet (the food I eat) Drinking enough water
Balancing work and play Belonging and purpose
Safety I ask myself: What is missing? How important is belonging and purpose?
I am reading an interesting book, Drive, by Daniel Pink, which examines what motivates us in workplaces and in life I guess. He notes that people thrive when they get or work towards the following:
Autonomy: People want to have control over their work. Mastery: People want to get better at what they do. Purpose: People want to be part of something that is bigger than they are.
Thoughts?

Water Park Fun Day Cool off and have a fun afternoon splashing and bouncing in the water park castle
and giant slide with a pool. Games and other fun water activities will be available for all to enjoy.
Snacks and beverages will be available for purchase throughout the event.
No registration required; just turn up at the Harbor Sports Club Soccer Field on Thursday, May 6th between 3:00pm – 6:00pm to get wet and have some fun.
Do not forget your towel !
For additional information, please contact [email protected] or call 808-6616.
You may remember that I asked for your input regarding actually paying (as
was initially advised by KAUST) for the movies we see. Though I didn‟t receive an overwhelming number of replies, the comments were unanimous: if paying SR 5 – 10 meant seeing a greater variety of movies each week, you all were in favor of it. One reply specifically mentioned wanting more children‟s movies shown because families‟ kids would certainly enjoy (and look forward to) that entertainment.
Is anybody listening?

Revised Parking Arrangements
One of KAUST‟s key objectives is to maintain an eco-friendly environment and minimize our footprint on our surroundings. As part of our LEED platinum rating, of which we are proud, we are constantly monitoring our practices and making adjustments to improve safety and enhance our energy profile.
We intend to convert the main plaza in front of Building 16 into a more pedestrian friendly and gracious environment. This will also reduce current vehicles‟ hydrocarbon emissions in that area.
Additionally, as part of our efforts to reduce energy consumption, we are introducing new traffic flow, car parking arrangements, and providing more open space in the main underground academic parking lots. We will improve pedestrian and traffic safety by designating a pedestrian-only area.
Although these changes may result in modest inconvenience and slight increase in walking distance to the elevators, the increase in our green practices, and pedestrian and traffic safety for us all, will more than compensate. The new parking arrangements will be implemented effective from May 1, 2010.
The open space, which will result due to these changes, will be redesigned to accommodate a number of amenities, including a sheltered green plaza, to better
serve us all at KAUST.

“Hi all, Do you want to buy a carpet? We have a guy bringing about 100 carpets from Jeddah this
Wednesday, May 5th
. He will be displaying them at our house (I-5509) from 18h00 till
about 21h00. His prices are very good, and he’s been trading carpets for a long time. Pop past
and have a look, and a chat. I’ll also have some of my silver jewelry available that evening!
Hope to see you then.” Lynda Murray

Subject: Four-day Jeddah jewelry show - Sunday, May 2nd thru Wednesday, May 5th This may be interesting to those thinking of making jewelry. AND if an Arabic speaker were
to go, we might be able to find out about local sources for jewelry materials and supplies. “JEDDAH: A four-day exhibition on precious jewelry opens on Sunday in Jeddah with
international exhibitors from the US, the UK and Lebanon exhibiting alongside Saudi
jewelers. The event is being held at the Hilton Ballroom in a glittering exhibition that is open
to the general public. The exhibition is open from 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. from Sunday to
Wednesday. Tuesday, by tradition, is a ‘ladies only’ day.”
Spring Break Mini-Travelogue:
We got snowed in the day after our arrival at Denver, Colorado.
2 and half feet of pure white fluff!
At the end of Main street, downtown Niwot, CO, we watched a native-American artist at
work. The eagle is the second piece of his trio. Quite marvelous! Niwot is named after
an Arapaho Chief, meaning left-handed. Thought it is the perfect place for Ned Flanders
from the Simpson's to open his left-handed shop. Even the creek here is named Left-
Hand Creek.

THE PET REGISTRY: Susan Hemp and Amy Farago have been putting together a database of pet owners so that we can try to identify lost/found animals and return them to their owners. If you have not as yet 'registered' your pet, we encourage you to please do so. The simple form is shown below this paragraph. You can get one to complete and send to the Registry by going to the following URL:
http://kcomm.wikispaces.com/PetRegistry
Even if your pets normally stay indoors, they can and do escape (as the Taylors will confirm – have you seen ChiChi yet?). It is probably more important that these animals get registered: if they are not used to being in the „big bad world‟ they may panic and run farther from their home. Send the form to: [email protected]; [email protected]

Martial Arts Classes
Join us at the Early Childhood Center 2 (near Big Tamimi) from 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm
and experience a challenging and fun workout with our professional martial artists; Fadi and Boni.
The Filipino art of Sikaran will be held every Saturday, Monday and Wednesday. This
martial art consists mainly of foot fighting but also incorporates the use of stick combat.
Taekwondo, the Korean art of striking with feet and fists, will take place on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
To register for the classes, contact the Harbor Sports Club Reception Desk at
808–6613. For inquiries please contact the NEW Recreation Information Desk at
[email protected] or call at 808 – 6616.
As seen above, there is now a KAUST Recreation Information Desk. It is located
on the second floor of the Harbor Sports Club, open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm, 7
days a week.
The Recreation Information Desk will provide the KAUST community with
relevant information and answer queries regarding the numerous recreation facilities,
activities and events, including fitness class timings and movie schedules.
Visit them to obtain printed schedules or ask their trained personnel.
Contact them at [email protected] or call 808 – 6616.

KAUST Recycling Plant Tour
As part of the activities organized at KAUST for Earth Day was a tour
of the KAUST Recycling Plant. A previous tour was organized for the KAUST Green Group.
The recycling plant is located centrally in KAUST. It is across the
street from the parking lot behind little Tamimi and faces Discovery
Blvd. There is currently no signage on the building’s entrance, which
makes visiting it a bit tricky.
The host of our tour was Nabil Kabache, and the tour lasted about 45
minutes. The tour included a video overview of recycling at KAUST
from collection to final disposal/recycling out of KAUST, a tour of the
different electric cleaning machines, the recycling machines used, and
the new electronic tagged bins used at residences.
Some key facts to be aware of are:
KAUST’s aim is for zero waste. An ambitious target, but it is
worth trying to get as close as possible to it.
The KAUST Recycling Center has been operational for the last six
months.
Since January this year till now only 29% of household waste is
recycled. The other 71% is not recycled. How do they know this?
An on-site composting plant solution is being investigated.
Glass is currently segregated but not recycled as no companies are
recycling glass in Jeddah. With Saudi Arabia having so much sand,
and therefore silicone, the motivation to recycle glass is not really
there. In the long term, the view is that the glass waste may be
shipped overseas for recycling.
Charitable organizations in Jeddah are being contacted to find a
suitable way for unwanted items to be disposed of rather than
being wasted.
Electronic waste or e-waste is currently not recyclable in Saudi
Arabia either, as the skills and equipment needed for such things
are not available.
A very interesting part of recycling at KAUST is the information being
gathered about the waste. Each of the householders’ bins actually has
Paper Shredding Machine
Shredded Paper Bales
Identification Tag
Ready for Shipping
an electronic Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) tag in it. The
tag/chip identifies the residence number and the type of waste that it
should contain. When the bins are collected they are weighed and this
information is currently gathered to identify many things about our
waste. In the future, as the KAUST community grows, the waste levels
can be “modeled” based on what is currently being produced. The information can also help in identifying how much more recycling can
be achieved. The information can also be used by city planners when
managing our “city” growth.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Remember that the order matters in the motto Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
motto. It is better to reuse items rather than send them for recycling,
and it is even better to not have to use an item unless needed.
As an example, an email should not be printed unless absolutely
necessary. If it is printed we could use the blank side of a previously
printed upon paper. Finally, when the paper is no longer needed, it can
be recycled.
Many buildings now have paper shredding machines for shredding
confidential papers and documents.
There is an ancient proverb: “We do not inherit the Earth from our
Ancestors, we borrow it from our Children.” If you want to organize a tour of the recycling plant, you can email

Swimming at KAUST We wish to advise all community members that swimming in Al Safaa Harbor is potentially unsafe and prohibited. There are many submerged objects which may cause injury. Moving boats and ships may also pose a hazard.
Until Al Safaa Harbor waters are cleaned, swimming at the South Beach or the Harbor Sports Club pool is recommended.
