Happy New Year to everyone connected to Phoenix Collegiate. I hope the Christmas break was a truly happy one for you all and that each family feels suitably refreshed. There is so much negative news both within the UK and across the world we have a tendency to be dragged down emotionally with it all. This newsletter should go some way to redressing those negative feelings. Our young people have excelled in so many areas of school life, and give good reason for us all to feel really proud of them. I am confident that they will have the life skills to ensure they make the most of the opportunities they have when they leave school. Indeed as I read the many articles going into this term’s bumper edition I was delighted to see the amazing spread of activities and opportunities that so many of our children are taking advantage of. If your child isn’t involved then do encourage them to join in. It is ‘cool’ to be part of Phoenix, and there is something for everyone who wants to be positive about school life! The year drew to an end with a range of concerts, a carol service and numerous sporting activities. Meanwhile in class we continued to move from strength to strength. Our exam groups are already predicted to achieve record results in June, and we have every reason to believe the remarkable performance of last year will be bettered this year. We all put our faith in the Phoenix revolution, and it has to be said all the signs, such as the contents of this newsletter and our exam performance, point to this being well placed. We also know that as a school we still have much to do, and to learn from our early experiences as Phoenix. We continue to make changes in many areas of school life as we slowly become truly one school. The old Manor/Menzies divide is being replaced with a sense of belonging to Phoenix, and whilst inevitably there are still some who are not sure about the process, the vast majority are making sure we are replacing the former schools with one to be proud of, and to move into the top of the Sandwell league tables. I repeat, we know that there is still a lot to do, but everyone, parents, pupils and staff should feel truly proud of what has been achieved in such a short time. This year will also see the arrival of the new style Ofsted inspection. Being a new school we realise Ofsted will not be able to judge us against long term performance but we hope and expect them to see the amazing progress made, and that they will reflect our confidence that we are on the road to high levels of success. When they do come we hope that children, parents and staff will all support our efforts to be recognised as a good school and one the area can be proud of. Finally things to look out for, other than Ofsted of course! We will again be represented in numerous sporting and musical events, along with performing arts and subject based field trips. Please do try to support these activities when you can as home support is singularly the most effective way of ensuring our children take part and enjoy the activities. The Parent Governors will be calling together the Parents Forum early this term, and there is also a vacancy for a Parent Governor that will be advertised in the coming weeks. In addition we are looking to change our day around a little bit, having listened carefully to what the pupils tell us. Our afternoon tutor period, known as period 6, will be moved to the early morning slot early in January so that the day begins, rather than ends, with a tutor period. Pupils will be given ample notice when the change is to start. I would encourage everyone to consider how they might help the school develop by taking part in these opportunities to make your voice heard. In addition, for parents of Years 11,12 &13, we are moving into exam season, so support and encouragement all round for the young people as they move into such a vital and stressful period of their lives. Annual Poetry Slam competition

Anti bullying week November 2011

The English department have once again been taking part the in the annual Poetry Slam competition. In groups, Year 9 pupils were encouraged to write a poem based on Christmas.

After much deliberation one group from each site were chosen to represent Phoenix in the final, which was held on Thursday 8th December at The Public in West Bromwich.

To help them create the winning poem the two groups spent a day with Spoz and his crew and three other schools, at the Sandwell TDC.

With lots of ideas and encouragement from Spoz & Co they created some really funny and inspiring poems on “Being Me.”

The Phoenix focus in line with the national and international campaign took place from 14th – 18th November. This included a poster competition, assemblies, awareness raising in lessons and another student survey on Frog. We continue to be part of the Sandwell ABI scheme set up last year which includes the sharing of good practice across Sandwell schools involved in the initiative. The data from the latest survey will allow school to improve our anti bullying stance further beyond the current high standards.

Winners of the poster competition were: Millie Dee (3N3) and Halima Akhtar (3I4). School reps could not decide between the two posters so they asked both artists to join up ideas, produce one combined poster and get it done professionally.

The lucky poets are: Dale Britton, Tom Willetts, Sunish Patel, Viraj Patel, Arjan Sangha, Muhibb Urramaan, John Marks, Alarna Lawley, Emily Millington, Kimberley Turbutt, Danielle Withey, Lana Walton and Mary Revan.

Phoenix south campus has benefitted from an extremely sound and effective school / police liaison working relationship over several years thanks to the hard work of PC Simon Riley, Inspector Gill Munslow and their team of officers. Insp. Munslow leaves our patch on 25th November to take up a post in Birmingham and this move will be their gain and our loss. School staff reps. attended a leaving lunch for Gill at the police station on 25th and Gill attended the school staff briefing on 24th to accept flowers and wine as a small token of appreciation from Phoenix.

Lunchtime queuing system on South CampusFollowing comments expressed by pupils and parents earlier in the term, a new system was set up for the B block canteen which included a one way system and timed queuing for Key Stages 3 and 4. This immediately reduced queuing times and allowed an orderly, safe and efficient queuing system for students with plenty of food and variety of food left for all on arrival. A positive change thanks to helpful comments, and now a happy canteen!

Cashless Catering Arrives at Phoenix.Cashless catering was launched at Phoenix on 1st December 2011, revolutionising the way students purchase breakfast and lunchtime food. The Biometric system used on both campuses has been extended to include our catering system meaning that cash is no longer accepted at the point of sale.

Gone are the days when students had to carry money to school every day and students receiving free school meals had to queue for tokens. Students ‘top up’ their ‘cashless accounts’ via one of two cash machines on South campus and one on North campus, or parents pay directly by cheque. It has taken a few days to iron out minor bugs in the system but as we all get used to this new technology there has been an improvement in the speed of service to students.

Further information about the system is available on the school website.

Year 10 performance: Since September Year 10 Performing Arts Students have teamed up to bring together a performance of Queen and Ben Elton’s hit musical ‘We Will Rock You’. The entire play was split between the three groups with students having to sing, dance and act!

Students were also responsible for set, costume and choreography. On the 13th and 14th of December students had the opportunity to perform their work in front of an audience of paying friends and family, both nights were a success with many outstanding performances.

We will rock you

We are now 2 days into the Phoenix Day annual programme with Law and Order and Problem Solving themes already covered across all years on both sites. The 4 period day with 2 breaks and a lunch break is popular with staff and students with very positive feedback received by Mr. Owens about the experiences gained so far. Phoenix Day is now firmly fixed on the school calendar as an exciting and innovative way of delivering major elements of our PSHE programme.

The second Phoenix Day on Thursday 10th November had several different activities across all Key stages with Years 7 & 8 looking into solving problems of sustainability via a project geared towards designing a “space station”. Several groups stayed indoors over breaks and lunchtime so that they could finish their work on the design and build aspects of the project!

Phoenix Days

Remembrance -

Staff, visitors and students of course respected the 2 minutes silence at 11.00am on 11/11/11 and being Phoenix Day 2 it was quite moving to hear the whole school fall silent for the full 2 minutes before a second bell signalled the end of the silence.

11/11/11School councilThe school council has met again since the last newsletter and continues to impact on whole school development while acting on issues raised via the Frog suggestion box facility.

Summary of council actions this term: 9 Liaised with the catering team to develop the school canteen

menu.

9 Liaised with the EWO team to secure a pupil speak attendance policy.

9 Secured the new Phoenix anti bullying policy which was passed by governors.

9 Secured the new parental leaflet on anti bullying which went out at half term.

9 Ensured all Year 7 students have Frog logins.

9 Ensured access to toilets at break on both sites.

9 Help set up the new lunchtime queuing system.

9 Prepared for Ofsted and student voice!

Year 9 pupils were looking into the effects of global climate change and how it may bring about localised flooding. They concentrated particularly on how we could minimise or alleviate the effects of flooding on important national landmarks.

Years 10-13 concentrated their efforts on looking at different ways of improving their employability through work on CV’s and job applications, while the sixth form also had a guest speaker from Stafford University offering advice on student life and personal statements.

Phoenix Collegiate Parent Portal your 24/7 Parent EveningThe parent portal on the school’s website has been receiving rave reviews and has been described by parents as “a great idea for parents to monitor their kids”, “superb idea” and “I like the idea of a frequently updated system that allows children’s activities to be monitored.”

So what is the fuss about? As part of Phoenix Collegiate’s efforts to keep parents informed the collegiate is developing an area on the school website just for parents. This area is secure & for those of you who are technically minded it runs in secure https just like your bank accounts. To access your child’s data you need your username and passwords.

Ok, so you have logged on. What information is there on your child?1. A list of subjects and teachers

2. A timetable (yes it tells you when they need sports kit!)

3. Attendance - detail to individual lessons.

4. Reports on positive and negative events

5. A school calendar

6. A collection of letters sent home (save you looking in the bottom of their satchels)

7. Plus many other pages for parents to communicate electronically with school.

You should have received your username and password but if you wish to receive them again or have had difficulty logging on please ring the school and ask for Terry who will guide you through the process. There are guides on the school website www.phoenixcollegiate.org. Click the “New to Phoenix” button on the front page. Be in the know!!

cool Fact: the students call this website Frog as it is the name of the company

After a recent open evening we listened to Phoenix students playing various tunes, including various James Bond tunes. We have some talented students and after chatting we came up with the idea of a trip to The Symphony Hall.

The Symphony Hall in Birmingham is a world class musical venue and on Friday night November 18th there was a Bond Night! So off we went and we had a fantastic night.

Beautiful tunes such Die Another Day, Goldfinger and Casino Royale echoed through the hall sending chilled sensations! An excellent night of entertainment enjoyed by all!

Business and Creative Academy – Desk top calendar

Yr 9 students, from North Site, Art and Enterprise class have created a desk top calendar. The art work was inspired by the four seasons and others artists work including Wassily Kandinsky, Henry Moore, Geogia O’Keefe and David Hockney.

Our sixth formers have been working with the Police and Sandwell Council to voice their concerns about the local area and suggest areas to be developed. This has been a good opportunity for these ambassadors of our Phoenix Sixth Form to raise their student voice in the local area. Two of our students who particularly shone out with their responses were rewarded with IPods. The picture shows PC Ramzan from West Midlands police and Diane Wright from Sandwell Council awarding the gifts to Daniel Roberts and Oshin Watson. It is an excellent achievement and we encourage our pupils to continue to be involved with the local community.

Sixth Form Open Evening – Wednesday 16th November 2011

The Sixth Form open evening was a huge success with many pupils and parents from both North and South site attending to see the excellent improved facilities of our Sixth Form Centre. There were two introductory meetings given by the Director of Sixth Form, Mrs Davenport with support from our Assistant Director Miss Barr and also our Executive Headteacher Mr Heavisides.

Hoodies for the homeless

During the spring and summer term of 2011, our present Year 9 raised £175 for local people who are homeless. Students across the year group indepen-dently took part in a range of fund raising activities, raising funds to help those who are in need. Over the past few months, monies raised have been spent on hooded tops to provide an extra layer of warmth for those people who have found themselves on the streets during the winter months. Several hoodies have been given out to homeless people on the streets of Dudley and Birmingham, with future drops planned for West Bromwich and Walsall. Mr Mountford, Miss Hemmings and Mrs Morgan have facilitated the process, collecting the money and handing out the hoodies on the behalf of Year 9, explaining to the recipients that our young people have bought these hoodies for them. One such person was a big issue seller on the streets of Birmingham, who was brought up around the corner from South Campus but had found himself on the streets do to a series of devastating circumstances. Also, £50 of the money has been allocated to support a local charity that helps to feed those people who are living locally in poverty. The response has been amazing and Year 9 should be very proud indeed of their hard work and charitable hearts. Well done Year 9. You are amazing!!!

Also a final thank you to our wonderful finance department for counting and releasing the funds raised.

J Mountford

Many of our pupils were supporting the event including our Leading Ambassadors Sophie Bevan, Adam Martin, Aidan Jones and Lindsey Walker. This was a good opportunity to see the wide range of courses and levels that our Sixth Form caters for alongside the support and enrichment activities offered.

There has recently been a rush of applications coming in to the Sixth Form office and any pupils who wish to join our thriving Sixth Form community are being asked to make sure that they get their applications in as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

ChristmasCarol ServicePupils from The Phoenix Collegiate gathered with parents and staff at the All Saints Church on 7th December for an evening of festive performances. The event was well attended and everyone enjoyed the variety of musical talent on display. A few highlights of the evening included the woodwind and brass band with their renditions of some classic favourites. The school choir also performed a selection of carols and the congregation enjoyed the flute, clarinet and violin performances. Readings by staff and pupils completed the programme of this great traditional event. Everyone left the service with Christmas cheer and a mince pie or two!

On Monday 28th November nineteen Year seven pupils took part in the quarter finals of a book quiz organised by the school’s library service and Sandwell libraries. The quiz was held in the LRC on South campus. We entered four teams of four with three reserves. The pupils had to read four books and then answer a series of questions about the books. The books in question were Cirque Du Freak by Darren Shan, Millions by Frank Cottrell Boyce, Dear Olly by Michael Morpurgo and Point Blanc by Anthony Horrowitz. There were seven rounds of questions, one round being a general knowledge round based on books and authors. It was a very exciting contest with two teams with the same points at the end of the competition resulting in a tie breaker question. The winning team called themselves the Biscuits and was made up of Leah Longstaff 3I2, Yashica Adlakha 3X4, Natasha Sunder 3N4 and Martha Lloyd 3X3. The two reserves were picked from the other tie break team and are Jessica Young 3P4 and Chaianne Frizzell 3P3. The semi finals of this quiz will be held on Wednesday 1st February 2012 at Central library in West Bromwich and the schools we will be competing against are George Salter and Sandwell Academy. This will be the first time the school has entered this competition under the Phoenix name so hopefully we will do well and get to the final.

Year 7 Book Quiz

X-Mas Factor Concert – South campusThe Phoenix Collegiate South Campus held a concert with a Christmas theme on Thursday 15th December. The event was a celebration of the talents of pupils and was jointly organised by a group of sixth form students as part of their Music BTEC course. The money from the ticket sales was given to charity.

Christmas Concert – North campusOn Thursday 15th December the Annual Christmas Concert took place at North Campus. As usual it was filled with lots of variety from audience participation, traditional instrumental performances through to rock/pop showcases. Well done to all performers and a big thank you to all the parents who continue to support their child’s musical journey. Long may it continue.

operation christmas childPhoenix Collegiate South pupils took part in a charity event called ‘Operation Christmas Child.’ The money they raised was used to purchase basic essentials such as: soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes for children living in third world countries. Other items that were purchased included: stationary, toys, sweets and small gifts.

Twenty three beautifully wrapped boxes were put together in total and it was amazing to see the amount of dedication and compassion shown by pupils.

The aim is to raise more money next year so that there will be more children around the world who will receive a box filled with happiness.

Glee ShowYear 9 Performance Academy pupils were treated to a performance of the Glee club pupils on Wednesday 14th December. The Glee club is a new extra-curricular opportunity for pupils to develop their singing, dancing and performance skills. The show was in school time and pupils used the performance as evidence towards their Performing Arts BTEC course. Everyone enjoyed the show and the performers were able to demonstrate their skills through an energetic mixture of contemporary popular music.

Enterprise week 2011 -

The Enterprise week has been a great success and this has been due to the hard work and dedication both by the students and the staff in the Business & Creative Academy. The students were involved in many activities including car wash, Fair Trade products, conservation of leopords awareness in Design & Technology, desktop calendars, cakes and muffins etc.

The Enterprise week demonstrated the innovative and creative manner in which the students have worked in teams. This has enabled them to develop their entrepreneurial skills in a relevant, challenging and enjoyable manner whilst raising their aspirations in the wider context of skills for learning, life and work.

John Godber’s comedy “Teechers”On December 6th and 8th Year 11 BTEC Performing Arts Students performed John Godber’s play ‘Teechers’. ‘Teechers’ is a challenging play for any actor as the entire action revolves around actors playing several parts and distinguishing between roles purely by altering body language and voice, yet Year 11 have managed to competently achieve the impossible with many students earning their highest grade since they began the course.

The performance was well received by audiences and enjoyed by the cast.

Well done year 11!

AttendanceAttendance at school for all our students is of utmost importance. For your child to achieve their targets they need to be at school all of the time and at least the school minimum of 95%. In the New Year all parents will receive a letter indicating your child’s attendance during the Autumn Term. Please take the time to read this letter and ensure they attend school every day.

Could I also take this opportunity to remind parents that school begins at 8.40 am as we daily have a number of students who arrive after this time. Please help ensure your child arrives on time for school.

Mr Smith

12th January 2012 On 12th January school will not begin until 11.00 am. This is to allow staff to complete vital child protection training.

Sports update Chris Brunt’s visit

9www.phoenixcollegiate.org

In November the school welcomed Chris Brunt - West Bromwich Albion captain and Northern Irish International footballer into the Physical Education department. Pupils asked Chris questions about being a professional footballer and what that entailed such as team work, discipline and a healthy lifestyle. Chris also spoke about how much he enjoyed being in school when he was a child and the qualities he got from working hard whilst at school. Chris gave out autographs and spoke about his time on and off. It was a fantastic afternoon where pupils got the chance to see a fans favourite in person and hopefully be inspired from what Chris spoke about.

It was a pleasure to watch them play so well for long periods of the 16 games. They played against many pupils who were a year older. This will have been a great experience and motivator for the tournament next year where they will be at the top of their age group. The pupils should be very proud of their efforts and conduct.

He has made excellent progress over these weeks due to his high levels of effort and self discipline. Sam has the potential to do really well in this sport if he continues to apply himself in the same way. If anybody is interested in taking up Boxing see Mr Shore for details.
