Summer 2015 5

President’s MessageDear Fellow Alumni,

I am honored to be starting a two-year term as president of the Alumni Association and thankful to outgoing president, Dr. Janet Gargiulo, Class of 1979, for her extraordinary dedication and tireless support of our alma mater.

As president, I would like to build on the work of Dr. Gargiulo and Dean Verdile to visit, inform and engage our alumni throughout the nation.

A former Albany native, I currently live in the Boston area where we have three medical schools. The effort put forth by Maura Mack Hisgen, executive director of the Alumni Association, and her staff to support our current medical students and our alumni, is a major reason why we remain connected to the origins of our professional success. In my new role as president of the Alumni Association, I am able to look at our Medical School and Medical Center and say with confidence that we have all graduated from a very special institution.

It has been a busy spring and summer in Albany!Alumni Weekend 2015 was extremely successful starting with the Distinguished Alumnus Lecture honoring Patrick O’Connor, M.D. ’82. I am confident you’ll enjoy reading more about Dr. O’Connor and the other 2015 award recipients in this issue. The academic and social programming was top-notch and alumni from all over the country joined us to reminisce about the past and learn about the dynamic future of the College.

I’d like to welcome two new board members: Kathryn Hogan, M.D. ’04 and Evan Vosburgh, M.D. ’82. We look forward to working with them on important alumni initiatives and engagement. We are most grateful for our retiring board members for their many years of generous and amazing service: Albert Apicelli, M.D. ’65 and Alan Sanders, M.D. ’88.

Please know we are planning to travel throughout the country with Dean Verdile in 2015-16, and hope you will join us at one of the events in your region. Also, for those of you celebrating your reunion in 2016 (graduation years ending in 1’s and 6’s), please mark April 29 – May 1, 2016, on your calendar!

Finally, on behalf of the Alumni Association Board of Directors, we wish all the members of the Class of 2015 the best of health and happiness in their personal and professional lives, as they go forth into their bright futures.

I hope you and your families have an enjoyable summer. If you need anything, or have a suggestion for our events or publications, please reach out to me by email: [email protected].

Dean’s Message

As we close out the 2014-15 academic year, I am confident that our newest alumni—physicians, nurse anesthetists, physician assistants, research scientists and ethicists— are well prepared for what lies ahead.

SPECIALEDITION

I am also eager to welcome our incoming students in August: an impressive and accomplished group of individuals who hail from all over the country. Additionally, I very much look forward to working closely with the new president of the Alumni

Association, Dr. Anthony “Tony” Campagna, from the Class of 1985, who will assume his duties from the Boston region.

It’s hard to believe that in June we capped off our ambitious multi-year fundraising initiative, Lifeline: The Campaign for Albany Medical Center. I am so pleased to report that we surpassed our goal of $125 million, with an incredible $149.3 million raised overall, with $81 million of that amount earmarked specifically for Albany Medical College.

I truly cannot thank you enough for your generosity in answering our call for support for our alma mater.

Be assured your donations are being put to good use funding critical educational, research and technological enhancements in the College and supporting our faculty and students. I consider the Lifeline Campaign as a foundation on which to build and address the needs of the Medical College and our philanthropic priorities. These include:

• Scholarship support, one of my highest priorities, to offset student debt and help us attract the very best students;

• Funding for professorships and endowed chairs, which helps considerably with faculty retention and faculty recruitment;

• Funding to enhance our curriculum and technology as medicine evolves and advances to keep us on the leading-edge of medical and biomedical education;

• Support for our Patient Safety and Clinical Competency Center. This wonderful facility helps set us apart and enhances our students’ education, allowing them to perfect their skills before they treat actual patients. Because of the facility’s high-tech nature, we are constantly seeking funding for new equipment and technologies;

• Unrestricted support through the Alumni Annual Fund, which allows us to meet the College’s most pressing needs which may include small capital improvements, technology upgrades, student research fellowships and other requests that come up in the course of a year.

Thank you for your continued philanthropic support of Albany Medical College and I hope our paths cross this year, so I can personally provide you with a more detailed update on the incredible things happening at the College. Onward!

All the best to you,

Vincent P. Verdile, M.D. ’84The Lynne and Mark Groban M.D. ’67 Distinguished Dean

I learned how to listen carefully to my patients,” said O’Connor, chief of the Section of General Medicine and professor of medicine at the Yale University School of Medicine. “I learned how to discuss their concerns with them and help them prioritize their goals.”

This knowledge would become foundational to the pioneering work he would go on to do.

This year’s distinguished alumnus, O’Connor is one of the foremost addiction researchers in the country. His work explores the transfer of substance abuse treatment from “specialty” centers to primary care and other general medical settings, such as emergency departments. His study on the first randomized trial of buprenorphine in primary care patients with opioid dependence was a national game changer and helped usher in expansive new ideas about how—and where—to treat drug abuse in America. O’Connor also studies treatment strategies for primary care patients battling alcohol addiction. He has published nearly 200 papers on these topics, many of which have appeared in leading journals like The New England Journal of Medicine and JAMA, and he has received numerous national awards.

In April, O’Connor presented his lecture “Expanding the Role of Physicians in Treating Addiction: From Research to Policy” to a warm and receptive audience of fellow alumni and members of the Albany Med community in Huyck Auditorium.

“The idea behind this work is not to replace addiction treatment programs like The Betty Ford Center,” he said. “The idea is to expand the venues where patients can receive highly effective addiction treatment. Why not bring addiction treatment into the physician’s office? There are a lot of us and we’re highly accessible throughout the country. Often addicts will present with a broad range of medical, psychiatric and social problems that are caused by addiction. As physicians, we can treat a lot of these conditions—high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV and depression—along with addiction—all under one roof.”

O’Connor’s research has coincided with a national epidemic. Heroin use has increased 79 percent since 2007 in the U.S., and drug-related deaths are now more common than deaths from car accidents.

Despite its high prevalence, “the NIH has demonstrated that only 11 percent of people who need addiction treatment end up getting it,” O’Connor said.

Bridging this treatment gap has been the driving force behind his work. He and his colleagues also favor a major expansion of addiction medicine fellowship training for doctors from the full spectrum of primary medical specialties, including internal medicine, emergency medicine, psychiatry, pediatrics, OB/GYN and others.

Patrick G. O’Connor, M.D. ’82 Named 2015 Albany Medical College Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumnus

Dr. Patrick O’Connor graduated from Albany Medical College in 1982, and perhaps the most important thing he learned as a student, he said, was how to talk to patients at the bedside.

REUNION

2 15WEEKEND

Page 9: EDITION Bulletin - Albany Medical Center2015 Distinguished Alumnus Evan Vosburgh, M.D. ’82 9 2015 Alumni Association Charles L. Poskanzer, M.D. ’45, Award Recipients 12 Reunion

The following alumni, staff and students along with the Class of 1965 were recognized at this year’s Alumni Association Awards Luncheon during Reunion, April 24-26:

EXEMPLARY ALUMNI SUPPORT AWARD

William M. Boehme, M.D. ’70 The Exemplary Alumni Support Award recognizes an alumnus who has demonstrated extraordinary dedication and philanthropic support of Albany Medical College. Dr. Boehme began his career as a board certified hematologist and is now happily retired.

In the late 1970’s, after moving out west to Kalispell, Mont., Dr. Boehme found himself doing small town medicine which by necessity included a little bit of everything. “The core curriculum at our medical college was tough and the pre-clinical and clinical years gave me great exposure. I think the learning that took place in medical school provided a great foundation for continued learning on the job. When I found myself in Kalispell, I was ready for all the challenges coming my way.”

Dr. Boehme was a biology major in college and nearly chose forestry school over medicine. These days—in retirement—he is able to satisfy his passion for the great outdoors and also enjoys carpentry and a host of other hobbies.

“I owe a debt of gratitude to Albany Medical College. My father made sure I had a true appreciation for giving back.” Dr. Boehme has been a loyal donor, “I planned ahead and provided a legacy to our Albany Medical College for years to come and hope others will join me with their own legacy.”

MERITORIOUS SERVICE AWARD

Janet E. Gargiulo, M.D. ’79 The Meritorious Service Award recognizes an alumnus who has demonstrated a deep commitment and active participation in the Albany Medical College Alumni Association. Dr. Gargiulo is immediate past president of the Albany Medical College Alumni Association and member of the Class of 1979. She completed her fellowship training in oncology at Albany Medical College, and her internal medicine training at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester, Mass. She received a master’s degree from Simmons College in Boston, Mass., and a bachelor’s degree from the College of Saint Rose, Albany.

Until her retirement in 2013, Dr. Gargiulo served as a clinical assistant professor at Albany Medical College and was in practice at New York Oncology Hematology, P.C. She is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine-Medical Oncology.

Dr. Gargiulo has been commended for her compassionate care of her patients and their families. She has given numerous talks on breast cancer to patient advocacy groups and has taken part in support groups for patients who are cancer survivors. Dr. Gargiulo has also participated in research directed at improving treatment and survival of cancer patients.

She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Ralph O. Claypoole Memorial Award in 2012 from the American College of Physicians (ACP), the largest medical specialty organization and the second-largest physician group in the United States. The award is given to an outstanding practitioner of internal medicine who has devoted his or her career to the care of patients and who is highly respected by his or her peers and colleagues.

The entire Alumni Association Board of Directors is grateful for Dr. Gargiulo’s dedication to the College and the Association. Vincent P. Verdile, M.D. ’84, The Lynne and Mark Groban, M.D. ’67 Distinguished Dean states, “Janet traveled extensively with me and members of the staff while also serving on the admissions committee for two plus years. During her board tenure, Janet participated in more than thirty Alumni Association events; her energy, engagement and optimism have been an inspiration to all of us and we are most grateful for her outreach and work on behalf of the College.”

Dr. Gargiulo’s service and commitment also extends to her continued philanthropic support of the College, and her fellow directors believe she is the true embodiment of what the Meritorious Service Award represents.

What’s Next? Preliminary Medicine Year at Albany Medical Center, then anesthesiology at Emory University Hospital. I hope to do a fellowship in critical care.

Why I am grateful to Albany Medical College?I entered as a non-traditional student, and Albany Medical College saw the potential in me and nurtured it over the last four years. The support I have received has been unbelievable, and I will never forget it.

What’s Next? I will pursue residency training in pediatrics at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis with a long term goal of being a pediatric hospitalist in an academic center.

Why I am grateful to Albany Medical College?I came to Albany Medical College to pursue a career in medicine without a true sense of direction or a full understanding of the rigors of medical education. The College provided me with solid academic support to help me maximize my potential and also gave me the opportunity to discover the specialty that I truly love. I could not be more excited to continue my pediatric training. I know that when I start work as an intern, I will be fully prepared for whatever challenges await me.

According to John Kaplan, Ph.D. ’76, professor in the Center for Cardiovascular Sciences at Albany Medical College, director of Graduate Studies at AMBI and the Institute’s research ethicist,

“The size of our graduating class reflects an increase of students from two to three years ago. Our program’s flexibility allows students to finish at different times, depending on their lives and schedules.” Dr. Kaplan also credits the growing awareness of bioethics on a national level with an increase in individuals seeking degrees in this area.

The medical student curriculum requires coursework relating to bioethics including: Health, Care and Society (HCS) offered to students throughout the four years of medical school. The goal of HCS is to lay the foundation for “good doctoring” by developing competencies relating to the ethical and humanistic aspects of the practices of medicine and the importance of the patient-physician relationship. Another course, Real World Medicine, is a hybrid of classes and small group sessions that addresses the American health care system. The course provides medical students with opportunities for debate and discussion on ethical issues in healthcare. Additionally, the College offers students the opportunity to graduate with a degree in Distinction in Bioethics.

The Masters of Science and Ph.D. students studying basic medical sciences in the College’s Interdisciplinary Research Centers are required to take two courses: Introduction to Scientific Integrity and Discussions in Scientific Integrity. The curriculum is designed to provide early exposure to research ethics and scientific integrity supplemented with ongoing discussions.

AMBI has a number of current professionals returning for a degree or certificate in bioethics, including alumnus Chris Campese, M.D. ’90, M.S. ’15. Dr. Campese explains why he pursued his degree: “I obtained a Master’s in Bioethics from

AMBI in order to supplement both my clinical and academic responsibilities. I have developed a Bioethics curriculum to teach these principal concepts to medical students and residents. I also sit on my hospital’s Ethics Committee. The degree has helped me navigate a myriad of opportunities with a solid foundation of knowledge and skills, and I am ever grateful for the excellent education I received.”

Doctors In UniformJeffrey D. Hubbard, M.D. ’68, Historian

Following conferral of the medical degrees at the 177th Commencement, Kevin C. Kiley, MD, Chair of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Albany Medical College, Retired 41st Surgeon General, United States Army, and Honorary Member of the Alumni Association (2014) addressed the assembly:Dean Vincent Verdile, Mr. Barba, Board of Trustees, distinguished faculty, brand-new graduates, families and friends: Thank you for the opportunity to perform a short but very important ceremony.

Monday is Memorial Day, when we remember the men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our nation: the Land of the Free, because of the Brave. You have joined the profession of medicine, and five of your classmates are going to join the profession of arms. The oath they are about to take, and the paperwork they signed (because there is nothing in the military that doesn’t have paperwork) are binding under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, and their character and their every action will be of the highest caliber.

Now, my son Sean is a thirty year old Army Medical Service Corps captain, serving with the famous 3d Brigade, 101st

Airborne, the Rakkasans, in Afghanistan. Three Sunday mornings ago, he called me on my cell phone using the Tango app and said, “Dad, I’ve been shot, but I’m O. K.” And I said,

“O. K. . . how’s the food over there?” Then I said, “What happened?” He and two of his soldiers were ambushed by somebody dressed as an Afghani soldier, and the Americans were hurt; they are fine, although Sean was hit in the forearm. It led me to think, as the Dean said this afternoon about hope, that men and women don’t move to the sounds of the guns unless they have hope that there are doctors and nurses and medics who will care for them if they’re injured or ill. Fortunately our nation has the best medical systems in the world, from the battlefield all the way back to the medical centers, and these five young doctors will join that long line of outstanding military physicians.

General Creighton Abrams used to say, “What America needs, it can’t buy. It needs men and women who see service to the nation as an affair of the heart.” I know these five young doctors, and I know that’s part of how they feel about joining the military.

So I’m going to call them forward and read them the oath.

[As Doctor Kiley began to read the names, the platform group, led by Richard J. Blinkhorn, M.D., Chair of Medicine, arose, followed by the graduates and the rest of the assembly.]:

Doctor Luke Beardslee, Lieutenant, United States Navy

Doctor William Chang, Captain, United States Army

Doctor Reynold Henry, Captain, United States Air Force

Doctor Morgan Lindsay, Captain, United States Army

Doctor Kathleen Ruzzo, Lieutenant, United States Navy

“Raise your right hands and repeat after me:

“I (state your full name), having been commissioned an officer in the Armed Forces of the United States, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States, against all enemies, foreign and domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully execute the duties of the office upon which I am about to enter. So help me, God!”

Doctor Kiley congratulated the new officers. They faced the Colors and saluted, and Ms Deirdre Michael, Albany Medical Center Space Management, took the podium and sang the National Anthem with spirit and beauty.

[We thank Dr. Kiley for making his remarks available.]

Albany Medical College alumnus Anthony Ritaccio, M.D. ’84, credits Albany Medical

College for shaping his 30-year career—one that is decorated with numerous recognitions, research articles, international speaking engagements, and most recently, one of the most prestigious honors in American scholarship.

Dr. Ritaccio, J. Spencer Standish Professor of Neurology and Neurosurgery and vice chairman of the Department of Neurology at Albany Medical College, has been selected as a Fulbright Scholar, an honor awarded by a board appointed by the president of the United States. The award recognizes his groundbreaking work in developing and disseminating advanced brain mapping techniques in the United States and Italy.

According to Dr. Ritaccio, his long-tenured history with Albany Medical College has brought him to this point. “I received my medical degree from Albany Medical College; I completed my residency here, where I became chief resident; and I’ve now been on the faculty for nearly a quarter of a century, so essentially, one could say that the fundamental seeds for my success in academic neuroscience is a reflection of this sequence,” said Ritaccio, crediting his many mentors at Albany Medical College for their roles in facilitating his success and affording him “academic creativity.”

“As Dean, I am proud that an Albany Medical College alumnus and an esteemed faculty member has received well-deserved international recognition at the highest levels as a Fulbright Scholar,” said Vincent Verdile, M.D. ’84, The Lynne and Mark Groban, M.D. ’67 Distinguished Dean of Albany Medical College and executive vice president of

health affairs at Albany Medical Center. “We congratulate Dr. Ritaccio for receiving this award and for his exceptional academic achievements and extraordinary contributions to the field of neuroscience.”

As a Fulbright recipient, Dr. Ritaccio joins the ranks of distinguished scholars who have become presidents, heads of state, judges, ambassadors, CEOs and university presidents. Fifty- three recipients have earned Nobel Prizes.

Since 2012, Dr. Ritaccio and Gerwin Schalk, Ph.D., associate professor of neurology at Albany Medical College and research scientist at the New York State Department of Health’s Wadsworth Center, have led an

international academic partnership supported by a multi-million dollar grant from the European Union to create a research lab in Italy that may someday help those who are paralyzed or disabled communicate with computers and a new generation of prosthetic devices using only their thoughts.

Modeled after the brain-computer interface (BCI) lab at Albany Med/Wadsworth, the BCI lab is the first of its kind in southern Italy.

“I could have never anticipated that following my passionate interest in deciphering the brain would have resulted in such a meaningful and preeminent honor,” said Dr. Ritaccio, who currently directs the Epilepsy and Human Brain Mapping Program and the Clinical Neurophysiology Laboratory at Albany Med.

“Senator Fulbright believed that international scholarly exchange is the most potent and humanizing process in foreign policy. I hope my efforts are worthy of his vision.”

“From 1975-85, I had the great pleasure of working in Dr. Jiri Turinsky’s laboratory at Albany Medical College. Dr. Turinsky was a perfect mentor in every sense of the word—helping me develop from a naïve college student to an academic physician in training. After my graduation in 1985, Dr. Turinsky helped me make connections with his network of investigators to continue my postdoctoral training in science and medicine. I am the scientist and physician I am today because of his extraordinary dedication to teaching. For more than four decades, Dr. Turinsky taught scores of undergraduate and graduate students at our alma mater. He continues to serve as a role model for me, and I know I speak for many others when I express my gratitude for his commitment to education.”

Taking Care of a Treasured EntranceIn honor of the 175th Anniversary of Albany Medical College, the Alumni Association proudly supported a project to restore the College entrance in the J Building. “There are few visual landmarks as iconic to the College as this one,” said Janet Gargiulo, M.D., ’79, immediate past-president of the Alumni Association, who helped facilitate the restoration. The entryway was part of the Lancaster School, which was designed by renowned 19th-century architect Philip Hooker, whose many projects included the original New York State Capitol building. When Albany Medical College was founded in 1839, the Lancaster School became its first home. In 1928, the original façade was moved to New Scotland Avenue, where it has seen the arrival and departure of thousands of Albany Medical College students, as well as its fair share of easterly winds and weather. The Alumni Association’s restoration project was completed in April.

John Schenck, M.D. ’77

Matching Gift, Double the ImpactMany alumni can double their financial support to Albany Medical College by making a corporate matching gift. A large number of companies partner with Albany Med to match the philanthropic contributions of their employees and their spouses.

John Schenck, M.D. ’77 is deeply committed to supporting the Alumni Annual Fund and having his annual gifts matched by General Electric.

“Although it has been a long time since I was a medical student, I am keenly aware that the long-ago opportunity to attend Albany Medical College still strongly affects every day of my life and is very important to both me and my family. I believe giving back to the College allows me, and my fellow alumni, an opportunity to provide support for worthwhile programs and also demonstrates that the College has produced a loyal group of alumni who believe in its mission and its capabilities.

Most of my work since graduation has involved research on medical imaging technologies, particularly MRI, at the General Electric Research Labs. GE has long had a policy of matching dollar-for-dollar employee contributions to a wide range of charitable and philanthropic causes.

This provides a completely painless means of doubling the value of my contributions, and I can’t see any reason not to take advantage of it.”

Janice and Gary Grover, Ph.D. ’83

Research as a PriorityA generous gift of $50,000 from alumnus Gary Grover Ph.D. ’83 and his wife Janis will help finance research for graduate student scientists. The Grovers made their donation to Albany Medical College because they are passionate about supporting scientists.

Dr. Grover is semi-retired from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School and teaching part time as a professor at Rowan School of Osteopathic Medicine after a 30 year career of drug discovery with 200 peer reviewed papers and 20 patents. Janis is president of an international marketing company. “We both believe life is not complete until you give back. There was always someone helping us; now it’s our time to help.”

Janet Gargiulo, M.D. ’79

Engagement Reaps Rewards In 2014, Janet Gargiulo, M.D. ’79 began her third year as president of the Albany Medical College Alumni Association. Dr. Gargiulo attributes her successful and satisfying career as an oncologist to her alma mater where she completed her M.D. degree and fellowship. She believes that serving as president allowed her to advance the mission of the College through her engagement with fellow alumni and current students.

“I wanted to give of my personal time, energy and leadership skills to promote a sense of community among Albany Medical College alumni - giving back can be achieved through mentorship, goodwill, teaching, service and philanthropic support. This is the message that I am proud to convey to our alumni.”

“It has been my privilege to connect with so many amazing alumni and students who meet the challenges and responsibilities of their professions and medical school, and are exceptionally well-rounded in their commitments to service and extracurricular activities.”

Dr. Gargiulo is a proud supporter of the Class of 1979 Endowed Scholarship Fund and the Alumni Annual Fund.

DiMeola Family Legacy Opens Doors

PILLARSPROFILE

Herbert DiMeola, M.D. ’68 wants as few students as possible to graduate from medical school with debt, and he’s done his part to help by establishing, with his son, Michael DiMeola, M.D. ’08, the DiMeola Family Scholarship Fund.

“I believe deeply in scholarship support,” said the Connecticut physician. “I want to help give students the chance to graduate without financial burden so that they are completely free to plan for the future—such as buying a house, setting up a savings plan.”

Indeed, Dr. DiMeola is appreciative of the excellent education and hands-on training he received at Albany Medical College.

“We were a small class, just 64 students, but Albany Medical Center was large, so there was no shortage of practical experience available to us,” he said. “What we were exposed to and the cases we saw were phenomenal.” After graduating, he returned to Connecticut for a medical residency at Hartford Hospital, followed by a fellowship in dialysis and nephrology at Yale New Haven Hospital. During his time at Yale, he was aware of a gap in dialysis service in many parts of Connecticut, including the eastern portion.

“I encountered patients who were traveling several hours to New Haven for dialysis. Since this is a treatment needed very frequently, sometimes every day, you can imagine how disruptive this could be,” he explained.

So, after completing his fellowship in 1973, Dr. DiMeola opened a dialysis center at Rockville General Hospital in Vernon, Connecticut.

“We performed the first dialysis procedure in eastern Connecticut, and the practice skyrocketed,” he said. He ran that program for 20 years before being asked to join Johnson Memorial Hospital system as vice president of medical affairs where he focused on physician education, program development and recruitment. “All the while I continued to see patients,” he said.

In fact, in the late 1990s, Dr. DiMeola was part of an early movement of hospitalist proponents, advocating for increased use of inpatient internal medicine physicians, and was an original member of a fledgling organization that eventually became the National Society for Hospitalist Medicine.

When Michael, the second of his three children, was accepted at Albany Medical College, he attended on a full Army scholarship. Dr. Michael DiMeola is currently an anesthesiologist at San Antonio Military Medical Center where he is also an associate professor of anesthesia for the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.

“Because Michael was able to go to medical school on a ROTC scholarship, he experienced firsthand the benefits of being debt-free when he started his medical career,” the senior Dr. DiMeola said. This insight ultimately motivated the family to create the DiMeola Family Scholarship Endowment. The endowment will be funded by combining the family’s outright giving with a $50,000 bequest. By thinking creatively about their gifts the Drs. DiMeola have become Pillars Society members and they encourage others to join them to create their own family legacy of support.

ClassNOTES

Born to Czech immigrants in Schenectady, she attended William Smith College, and

matriculated at Albany Medical College in 1934. In anatomy class, she met Cornell graduate Victor N. Tompkins. They married two days after their 1938 graduation. The newlyweds were rotating interns at Albany Hospital (now AMCH), and then trained in pediatrics (ECT) and pathology (VNT) in Boston.

Ethel could have been a pathologist. Sidney Farber, M.D., Pathologist to Boston Children’s and founder of pediatric pathology, offered her a residency position after her pediatric training at Children’s. She replied, “Oh, Dr. Farber, I’m pregnant!” Lucina was born in 1942 and Ethel remained a pediatrician. While Victor was, “At the War,” as she put it, Ethel practiced pediatrics in Albany.

The Tompkinses bought a 1903 rowhouse on Madison Avenue, across from Washington Park, where Ethel practiced pediatrics on the first floor, and the family lived on the top two floors. Three more daughters arrived. Ethel taught at Albany Medical College, and was pediatrician to most of the children of Albany Medical College faculty, a professional compliment as well as a financial burden. (One didn’t charge other doctors or their families in those days.)

From her busy practice, she developed an awareness of the importance of psychosomatic conditions in children. To improve her understanding, she studied psychiatry and psychoanalysis with Clinton P. McCord, M.D., her neighbor across the Park, and often had patients needing such therapy referred to her. In 1964, she went to SUNY Albany as senior physician to the student health services. In the early 1980s, Ethel and Victor began spending winters in Tarpon Springs, Florida.

In summer, 2008, Victor died at their Madison Avenue home. Ethel returned from Florida for the last time in spring, 2015, and died at home, in her 102d year. She is survived by her daughters, seven grandchildren (one of whom, Emma James, is a medical student) and three great-grandsons.

The doctors Tompkins endowed a medical student scholarship fund through the Alumni Association office several years ago. Ethel continued to support it generously and enjoyed meeting recipients. She participated in College and Alumni Association affairs into her second century.
