Our homes are an extension of who we are: what we do within the walls of our abodes shapes our mood, affects our productivity, and influences our outlook on life. Scientific studies have shown that we can have an impact on our happiness by adjusting the tiny little habits and routines that constitute our daily lives — we are, in fact, in control of our outlook on life.We all need to be cherished. Valentine’s Day can be a wonderful opportunity to remind all of our loved ones (not only our sweethearts) how glad we are that they're in our lives.

The following ideas will work charms:1. A Letter of Appreciation... detailing how grateful you are to have them in your life. Be as specific as possible; “the way you let me sleep in the morning while you make the kids breakfast” because the recipient feels seen and appreciated. Don’t worry if it isn’t eloquent. Any heartfelt love letter will be cherished by the recipient.2. Make Valentines cards... with your kids? This can be as simple as red craft paper, scissors, and colour markers, or invite their friends and have fun together (tweens can bring music and digital cameras to make cool digital cards)3. A gift certificate for a backrub or foot massage

Ons skop hierdie jaar af met groot op-winding. Ons vier ‘n groot mylpaal! Ons begin sommer met ons eerste uit-gawe vir 2016 en ons gaan nie stop tot en met December nie. Housefinder tydskrif is ‘n volle 10 jaar jonk. Ons gaan dit behoorlik vier en ons begin met ‘n splinternuwe, baie subtiele nuwe “look”

Hierdie aanpassing is spesiaal aange-bring vir ons verjaarsdag jaar met ‘n nuwe 10 jaar logo daarby.

Dit voel soos gister wat ons begin het en stelselmatig verskeie veranderinge aangebring het, nagte om gewerk het met sperda-tums en klein babas in die arms. Soveel uitgawes, besoeke by die drukkers, soveel produksie tye in ‘n oogwink. Die tydskrif het ge-groei en van krag tot krag gegaan, daarvan getuig elke groot uit-gawe. ‘n Groot dankie vir my Hemelse Vader wat hierdie passie aan my toevertrou het. Dankie vir ‘n bekwame span mense wat dieselfde voel soos ek. Dankie aan ons lojale kliente wat saam met ons stap, en dan dankie aan ons lesers en publiek wat dit die moeite werd maak vir ons agente en kliente om te adverteer.

Here are some easy tips when you house hunt!Before buying a property, check it out!

The Interior

Ÿ Cupboards: are they painted or stained, solid wood or chip board? Know what you are buying.

Ÿ Counters: laminates or solid surface? Laminates tend to stain and chip easily. Solid surface counters are more expensive but more durable.

Ÿ Floors: chipped or badly laid tiles will soon irritate you. Replacing badly soiled carpets could runt into the tens of thousands dollars.

Ÿ Bathrooms: check for leaks or cracks in the toilet pan, bath, shower and sink. Leaking pipes cause damp and if they're built into the walls, they will be expensive to repair.

Ÿ Windows: if you struggle to open a window, the chances are good that it will be difficult to close as well. Windows that do not seal properly will

let in drafts.Ÿ Ceilings: watermarks on ceilings

indicate a leaking roof

Ÿ The roof: check the condition of the roof from the ground by looking for cracked, curling or missing tiles or damages roof sheeting. Sagging roofs could indicate more serious problems like subsidence or structural issues. Visit the house on a rainy day to check for leaks.

Ÿ Fences: check the condition of fences and gates – keep in mind that building boundary walls (especially on large properties) can be very costly.

Ÿ Woodwork: check i f ex ter ior woodwork, such as decking, has been properly treated and is in good condition.

Ÿ The pool: check the pump and its general condition.

Ÿ Drainage: make sure that the property is well drained – especially if you are located at the bottom of a hill.

Ÿ Damp: find out if there are underground streams. On general, damp can be a very expensive problem.

Ÿ Gutters: are the gutters rusted or leaking and attached to proper drainage

Ÿ Paintwork: Does the house need any external painting?

We are living in the greatest debt bubble in the history of the world, the global banking system has been transformed into a high-risk pyramid scheme of debt, risk and leverage that could collapse at any time, and wealthy countries such as the United States have been living way above their means for decades. Meanwhile, the United States is being de-industrialized at a blinding pace and poverty in this country is absolutely exploding. China is struggling, the Islamic group on the one hand, immigrants fleeing over to Europe, South-Africa’s political dilemma with a depreciating rand and the Namibian dollar holding their hand and suddenly...fear kicks in. This can have a devastating effect on our personal economic future and families, if we don't gear ourselves into survival mode and get our mind-set into the right direction...

Don't wait until it is too late and your family falls apart. When financial difficulties hit the front door, the once happy families end up in a divorce court.Do not blame, or feel sorry for yourself, do not hate, but rather get into action. The reality is that “getting prepared” is going to look different for each family based on their own unique circumstances. Some people have a lot of resources, while others have very little. Some people are very independent of the system and can move wherever they want, while others are totally dependent on their jobs and must stay near the cities at least for now. What preparation are the economists talking about and how to get ahead:

#1 Above all else, have faith that our Heavenly Father have everything under control. Their is little that you and I can do about the world and its problems.

# 3 Don’t Put All Of Your Eggs Into One Basket – In addition to having an emergency fund, you will also want to have other commodities and hard assets.

#4 Reduce Your ExpensesA lot of people claim that they can’t put any money toward prepping, but the truth is that we all have room to reduce our expenses. We

all spend money on things that we do not really need. Those that simplify your life and reduce your debt load now, you will be in much better shape.

#5 Start A Side BusinessIf money is limited, a great way to increase your income is by starting a side business. And it does not take a lot of money. This will allow you to become less dependent on your job. In this economic environment, a job could disappear at literally any time. Some of the world’s leading economists suggest a network marketing company will leverage you in difficult times. Do your research well.

#6 Move Your Money Away From Unsafe Investments – When the financial world falls apart, you don’t want your finances to be exposed.

#7 Store Food And Supplies – Your dollars will never stretch farther than they do right now. You probably will not need emergency food and supplies in the short-term, but the truth is that none of us ever knows when a major emergency will strike. Just do whatever you can to get prepared.

#8 Learn To Grow Your Own Food – Anything that you can do to become more independent of the system is a good thing. This includes growing your own food. And the truth is that some of the most expensive items in the grocery store these days are fresh fruits and vegetables.

#9 Defending Yourself And Your Family – As our world become increasingly unstable, people are going to become a lot more desperate. And desperate people do desperate things. Have a plan in place.

#10 Have A Back-Up Plan And Be Flexible – Mike Tyson once aptly observed that everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth. The years ahead are going to require a great deal of flexibility, and you may find that the plans that you have made need to be altered. So don’t get fixated on just one approach.”

#11 Monitor the nancial markets.

Calm markets tend to go up. But if the market gets choppy, meaning prices swing up and down considerably, it will likely decline. Don’t be fooled if the market soars for one day. Big ups and downs in the markets are a red ag signaling an overall decline.

#12 Keep an eye on global 10 year bond yields. Global bonds are bonds that are issued in several countries at once by governments or large multi-national companies. When 10 year global bond yields drop, it is in indicator that investors are withdrawing their money to put it in safer investments. This happened before the nancial crisis in 2008. A signicant drop in 10 year global bond yields means that investors think a nancial crisis is coming.

#13 Pay attention to oil prices. The uctuation of oil prices has a macroeconomic impact. When oil prices increase, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) goes up too. The GDP is a quantitative measure of the nation’s total activity. If it is increasing, then the value of goods and services is also going up. If periods of high oil prices signal good times for the world economy, then the opposite is also true. If oil prices are on the decline, expect the GDP and the nancial markets to also decline.

#14 Understand the relationship between ination and economic growth. Economic growth tends to lead to ination. As demand increases, prices are driven up and unemployment falls. As unemployment falls, wages increase. As wages increase, people spend more, which leads to ination of prices. Conversely, when economic activity slows down, so does ination. Therefore, if the price of goods and services slows dramatically, it could signal a major downturn in the economy.

We in Namibia are not excluded this time, and will too be inuenced one way or the other. Thus be prepared...

We start 2016 with a lot of uncertainty. We are talking about the world and it’s problems. We are exposed to the media, internet, face book, and friends and accosiates. Predictions, racism murders, ISIS, stock market and oil prices, immigration issues in Europe, weather changes, South Africa’s unstable economy and food prices rocket sky-high.

While writing this article the rainy season began and for the last 2 weeks we had a daily shower of rain. This is really hopeful as Windhoek and indeed the whole of our country, badly needs the rain. While the municipality suggests using borehole water, it is still our responsibility to make sure that, as pool builders and pool owners we use water in a responsible way.

The water restrictions include not filling pools anymore. This could lead to a situation where the water level in you pool drops below the skimmer (suction) and that you have to switch the pump off. Without a functioning filter your pool water becomes dirty and you can’t swim anymore. Unfortunately the long term effects can be quite severe, with more water needed to balance the pool and fill a half empty pool. If a pool stands dry for too long the damage can include cracking of the pool walls and collapsing.

To make sure you are still able to use your pool and prevent damage associated with

an emptying swimming pool, we have the following options for you:

1 The best, obviously is that the rain we receive is enough to keep your water level high enough.

2 Make sure that you use a proper pool cover. The pool covers that are covering your pool over the sides are stopping evaporation better than the floating ones.

3 Make sure that your pool is using as little water as possible by ensuring that your pipework is not leaking, the pump and filter lids are sealed and that your whole system is up to scratch. Contact LIC Pool maintenance department to come to your house to do a full system [email protected]

4 Catch as much rainwater you can to fill up your pool.

5 Let LIC Pool install a lower suction point in you pool that makes it possible to run a

complete filtration system as normal while the water can drop to half of the regular level. We can install that as a permanent installation that one can switch between the skimmer and the suction point or a temporary solution. Our maintenance department can tell you all about the options best for you and your swimming pool.

6 LIC Pool can supply you with borehole water from an alternative source outside town which does not affect the municipality water supply.

Dressing:3 Tablespoons light soya sauceThumb size piece of fresh ginger - finely grated1 Glove fresh garlic – crushedHalf cup rice wine vinegar3 Tablespoons water1 Tablespoon brown sugar1 Teaspoon sesame oil

Salad:1 Small English cucumber – seeded & sliced into ribbons with a potato peeler3 Spring onions – sliced into thin strips3 Medium sized carrots – peeled & sliced into ribbons½ Small red cabbage – finely shredded1 Small red pepper – very finely sliced½ cup fresh coriander leaves½ cup salted roasted peanuts – browned in the oven & crushed slightly

Mix dressing ingredients together and whisk.Mix all salad ingredients together except peanuts.Pour dressing over salad about ½ hour before serving.Allow salad to marinate in dressing.Sprinkle nuts over the top just before serving.

Whether you start a new garden or reno-vate an inherited one, choose the following Water Wise plants:

Reduced leaf size and fewer leaves. Plants with reduced leaf size have less surface area from which water can be lost through evaporation, e.g. Lavender. Others, like Acacias, shed their leaves during periods of drought to reduce moisture loss.Soft stemmed plants tend to wilt in the heat, water wise plants therefore have strong internal structures that support the leaf and prevent wilting – Agaves, Restios, Dietes (Wild Iris) and Strelitzia reginae.Aromatic oils in leaves – common in plants that are found in climates with hot, dry summers. These aromatic oils form a protective layer around the leaf, thereby decreasing the rate of evaporation. Lavender, sage and rosemary, Bay Leaf, to name but a few.Leaf colour and texture. Plants with greyish or blue-green foliage reflect the rays of the sun, keeping the plant cool and reducing water loss. Examples include Helichrysum, Wormwood, Echeverias and once again lavender. Leaves of plants such as Buddlejas, Olea africana (Wild olive) and Gazanias have undersides that are lighter in colour so that when it becomes too hot, they turn this side up in order to reflect the sun's rays away.Hairy leaves on plants assist in creating a microclimate over the leaf. As air moves over the leaves, the “coat” of hairs slows down the air flow, reducing water loss. A waxy coating on leaves also reduces moisture loss from plants – Kalanchoe, Ficus sp. and Indian Hawthorn.

We're talking water, or rather the lack of it. It's each and everyone's duty to handle this most precious of commodities with utmost respect, the onus is not on “someone else” to make sure it flows when we open the taps. Let’s look at some tips for do’s and don’ts where water is concerned.

— Cut the lawn at a higher level. Longer grass blades result in deeper roots and more drought tolerance, as well as preventing heat scorch in hot, dry weather.

— Water deeply, and less often, to encourage deep root growth, making the lawn more drought resistant. Once a week is usually more than sufficient.

— Water lawns in shady areas less often than lawn areas in full sun.

If you are not happy with bare patches where excess lawn was removed, create surfaces that require no water like:

Ø Permeable concrete pavers – a good choice for under large trees as rainwater easily reaches tree roots. Also for driveways.

Ø Gravel, flagstones and small pebbles. Dig out the soil to a depth of 10cm and put down a layer of geotextile cloth (sold as Weedgard in garden centres) to suppress weed growth. Fill with gravel of pebbles.

Ø Pine bark nuggests. No lining necessary to prevent weed growth as the nuggets slowly decompose, enriching the soil beneath. Replace the nuggets only as necessary.

Tips for water effeciant lawns:

— Create a smaller lawn area for less water consumption. Children can have as much fun on a smaller lawn as they would on a large one.

— Choose an appropriate lawn variety. The most water efficient lawn types are indigenous such as Cynodon species and hybrids. Seed is available at your local garden centre.

— Reshape your lawn. Do away with curvy lawn shapes and make the lawn circular or oval – this will “match” the shape of your lawn sprinkler. With regard to design, a simply shape creates a mood of tranquillity.

— Shape your lawn into a shallow saucer shape – or a series of saucer-shaped areas – by slightly raising the outer edges. The water from a heavy downpour will then collect on the lawn.

— Avoid having trees in the lawn area. They compete with the lawn for water.

— Delay spring-cleaning. Wait until the very end of the dry winter season before scarifying, top dressing and fertilising a winter-dormant lawn. Once fertiliser applied, the lawn will start growing and will need regular watering.

THE GRASS IS GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE – so is the water bill (for as long as there is water)!

Golden Rule on Soil Preparation: use ample organic material such as compost and coco peat – minimizes evaporation, less frequent water required. When do I water? Early mornings the earth crust is perfectly cool, no moisture loss, no stress on overheated plants.

We should and could do a lot to save water and can save thousands on your water bill.Ÿ Take shorter showers, and collect waste

water for your garde.ŸDon't leave taps running when brushing

teeth. This can save 6 litres of water per minute.

Ÿ Run a smaller bath. a Bath uses around 80 litres, while a short shower use a third of that amount.

Ÿ Fix leaks immediatelyŸ Fit taps with water-saving devicesŸ Toilets – reduce the water used per flushŸUse a pool coverŸDishwasher and washing machine? Only

turn it on when fully loaded. This cuts out unnecessary washes in between

Ÿ Re-use bath and shower water. Water your houseplants and garden.

Ÿ Be considerate of your host as a guest, also when staying in hotels and guest houses.
