From the Head of Junior School Dear Parents Parenting is a full-time job. Waking children up in the morning and getting them dressed, preparing breakfast and lunches, ensuring bags are packed, being out the door on time and negotiating the joys of traffic around schools can be energy sapping at the best of times. Repeating the process at the end of the school day with after school activities, homework, dinner and bedtime frequently means parents can be quite tired by the end of the week. This cycle can result in a lack of time to appreciate the small, simple joys of being a parent. This week is Book Week. This means the boys in the Junior School only have reading for homework across the week. As such I encourage parents to snuggle up with their young children and enjoy reading a book together, which should be a special time for children and parents. If you have time, visit the Junior School library over the next week or so and choose a book with your son. You can also enjoy looking at the Dr Seuss corner and the Makerspace. Book Week Book Week is promoted by the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA), which was established in 1945, and is a not for profit, volunteer run organisation that aims to engage the community with literature for young Australians. The CBCA presents annual awards to books of literary merit and for outstanding contribution to Australian children's literature. The short listed books were announced some time ago and the prize winning books were announced late last week. Our Junior School librarian, Miss Michelle Worthington is a CBCA book judge, one of only three judges in Australia in the older reader category. This means Miss Worthington reads a great many books, which seems just about right for a librarian! This is a most prestigious national position and we are very proud of and pleased for Michelle.

If you walked into school today you may have rubbed shoulders with Harry Potter, Thing One or Thing Two from Dr Seuss, pirates, Fantastic Mr Fox, the Cat in the Hat, very short Vikings, Hobbits and many other characters. The day was a magical adventure into the world of children’s books. The celebrations around Book Week culminated today with boys and staff dressed in costume, our annual Doorways Competition, with doorways and classrooms decorated, a special Book Week assembly, visiting authors and illustrators and a celebration of books and reading. This is one of my favourite days of the school year!

Today was a most wonderful occasion and I congratulate boys, staff and parents for the enormous effort that went into all that occurred.

Staffing Mrs Jeanette Morgan, one of our Prep teachers, has announced her intention to retire at the end of this school year. Over the past eleven years, Mrs Morgan very much created the Prep ‘flavour’ in the Junior School, making the educational program into something that suits young boys. I thank Jeanette for her many wonderful contributions to our school and her care of so many boys and families. We will farewell Jeanette appropriately later this year and thank her in style. Mrs Marijke Eldridge recently commenced work with us as a part-time teacher aide. Mrs Eldridge has a range of qualifications and a depth of experience and brings these skills to the job she does working with a range of children. Miss Mary Uccellini joins us as a student teacher. Miss Uccellini is currently on a four week teaching practicum working with Mr Jeffries and the boys in 6J.

National Cross Country Championships Two Junior School students recently represented Queensland at the Australian Cross Country Championships, with this event being held in Hobart, Tasmania. Charlie Randall and Archer Black, both in Year 6, competed well in fairly bleak conditions. Archer finished in 32nd place, which is a fine achievement at a national level. Charlie ran exceptionally well to win the 11 years event for boys, becoming a National Champion. Both boys were members of the Queensland team which placed first, earning gold medals, based on the places of their first four runners. In addition, the boys competed in the cross country relay event, finishing in second place. The boys enjoyed a most successful competition.

Charlie’s national success follows on from him becoming a State Champion earlier this term. The nicest part of this story is that Charlie is pure home-grown talent, having commenced in Mrs Morgan's Prep class in 2011 and, yes, Charlie was Age Champion as a 5 year old in the same year. Congratulations to both boys on their fine level of achievement.

From the Deputy Head of Junior School Nude Food Day Just a reminder to families that Nude Food Day is each Tuesday. The boys at the Junior School are encouraged to bring to school food that is not prepacked for morning tea and lunch. There are two main reasons for implementing this idea. One is to promote healthy eating, good nutrition and limit the intake of processed foods. The other reason is environmental, where the amount of wrapping (paper/plastic) used is reduced. Food ideas include pieces of fruit and vegetables, salads, sandwiches, pasta, wraps and ham and cheese roll-ups. Uniform Just recently there have been some impromptu uniform inspections within the Junior School. We have found many of the boys do not regularly clean their black school shoes and some do not have the correct hat or in the upper primary, are not wearing a belt. It would be appreciated if you could ensure that your son attends school with clean shoes and the correct uniform. It is also important that the boys bring their sport clothes on the day that their class has a PE lesson. There are also occasions when an individual child does not participate in their PE Lesson because of illness or injury. From the Head of Teaching and Learning ICAS testing Our ICAS testing regime is complete for another year and the boys are eagerly awaiting the return of certificates for English and Maths. As a school, we use this data as part of our analysis of strengths and weaknesses across year levels in different aspects of Literacy and Numeracy. This assists and informs teachers in their planning and teaching. We also use this data as a cross check for our NAPLAN data to ensure our boys are tracking forward in Literacy and Numeracy across a number of student tests and not just on the results of an individual day in May. NCCD 2017 The Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability identifies students with disability so that they can access and participate in education on the same basis as their peers. It captures the work of schools in the provision of personalised learning and support for students with disability. It is a mandatory process for all schools. Why do schools collect this data annually?

To inform policy development and future planning to better equip schools and education authorities to support students with disability.

To provide and enhance focus on the individual needs of each student by focussing on the level of educational support provided to them in the school context.

Sports News Track and Field Last week we had 24 boys represent Toowoomba Grammar School at the Range Zone Track and Field Carnival at O’Quinn Street. Boys who gained selection in the Range Zone team to compete at the Darling Downs trials later this month are: John Tinkler, Matthew Jacob, Charlie Lachmund, Jack Brown, Brodie Harrison, Max Grills, Bona Roberts, Patrick Nolan, Jaydahn Hearn, Archer Black, Matthew Taylor, Charlie Randall, Hussein Yusaf, Noah Taylor, Judd Rei and Walter Tinkler. Congratulations boys. The team for the GPS Track and Field Meet will be announced later this term. We are waiting on the confirmation of events and how many competitors are required. On the sports noticeboard there is a training schedule for track and field. Boys in Year 4 - Year 6 are encouraged to attend any of these sessions that are of interest to them. Cross Country Recently, Charlie Randall and Archer Black travelled to Hobart to compete in the Australian National Cross Country Championship. Both boys competed in the 11 Years individual event on Saturday and in the relay on Monday. Charlie finished 1st in the individual event and Archer finished 32nd. The boys won a gold medal in the team event and a silver medal in the relay. Congratulations boys. State Champions Last week, Matthew Moore and Judd Rei competed at the Primary School State Touch Football Championships in Ipswich. The Darling Downs team that Matthew and Judd represented won the State Championship and Matthew was selected in the Queensland team to compete at the National Carnival later this year. Under 5 – Under 8 Swimming Carnival The Junior Swimming Carnival is on Wednesday 6 September. The programme and the final arrangements will be sent out closer to the day. Parents are most welcome to come along and support their son/sons. Prep and Year 1 Gymnastics For the first 7 weeks of term 4 the Prep and Year 1 classes will be travelling to All Stars Gymnastics as a part of their weekly sport. A program has been designed for boys of this age and the centre will provide instructors to coach the boys. The cost of the programme is covered by the GP levy. Club Rugby This weekend is the final round for club rugby at Dalby. A draw has been sent home today. Sports Uniform The boys were recently told that they could wear compression clothing for sport and PE classes. These items are to be blue or black only and are not to be worn all day, only for the PE lesson or for the sporting game. David Anderson Sportsmaster

The Junior School boys, despite the wave of illness which coursed through the school in Week 4, performed with excellence in the Drama Eisteddfod. The boys competed in Verse Speaking, Humorous Verse, Memorised Prose, Character Poem and Monologues. They were placed in most sections entered and the blue and gold drew the attention and comment of the adjudicator on a number of occasions. The lads performed with confidence and a love of dramatic art. They received their awards in the spirit of true gentleman and equally, demonstrated admirable spirit in defeat. Library News Earlier in the year, the school purchased two Dr Seuss prints from the Trevor Victor Harvey Gallery (Queen Victoria Building, Sydney). We were able to purchase these two prints from the money raised by our past Year 6 boys. All Dr Seuss art is reproduced as limited editions, with the pieces being individually numbered. Like Norman Rockwell, Seuss personally created every rough sketch, preliminary drawing, final line drawing and finished work for each page of every project he illustrated.The two prints we purchased as a school are titled, ‘There’s so, so much to read!’ and ‘These Things are Good Things!’. The prints are currently on display in the library in our Dr Seuss corner. I invite you to come down and have a look. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mary-Lou Fraser, Tiffany Holzheimer, Liz Pratt, Shane Pratt, Maddie Payne and Neil Cushway for their help in putting together our Dr Seuss corner. CBCA Book of the Year Awards 2017 The wait is finally over!

On Friday CBCA announced the winners of the esteemed 2017 Children’s Book of the Year Awards, recognising the incredible depth and scope of talent in Australian children’s literature.

From entries of over 400 titles and almost 600 creators, the judges had the challenging task of selecting just one winner and two honour books from each of the five categories. Winners include a scientist, a street artist, a radio producer and a seven-time CBCA award winner among others.

This year’s theme Escape to Everywhere will inspire children’s book character parades, activities and imaginative displays in schools, libraries and communities across the country in celebration of Australian children’s books and the joy of reading.

Music News Musicians’ Concert Congratulations to all boys who performed at the Musicians’ Concert last Thursday, 17 August. Ensemble Rehearsals Please remember that music ensembles are not clubs and therefore they rehearse every week of the term. Combined Orchestra On Thursday 7 September the Junior School will be hosting a combined schools’ orchestra day. On this day, girls from The Glennie School will join with our Orchestra to form a large combined Junior School Orchestra. The day will be filled with full orchestra rehearsals as well as small group sectional workshops and will conclude with a concert at our assembly.
