O ur front page story this week is about Beerwah local Daisy Bradford who recently volunteered her time

as a student nurse to work in Tanzania.Reading about her experiences makes it clear just what a remarkable experience it

was for her – and how grateful she was to receive financial support from our community to enable her to be able to volunteer her time in a children’s hospital and an orphanage.I know when Daisy first contacted us I was really taken by how dedicated she was doing a full-time university workload as well as working full-time and undertaking a fundraising effort. At the time I said to her (as I do to most people we write stories where fundraising is involved) that we would love to

hear about how it all panned out.She hadn’t been home long and she was back in contact really keen to do a follow up and determined to thank those that had assisted her in being able to make the journey. This really impressed me as so many people contact us at the paper to promote their fundraising efforts but they don’t always consider the importance of following up and saying to the community – thanks your generosity meant that I or we could do this valuable / rewarding / beneficial work.So I would like to say thanks Daisy – thanks for letting us know that the donations helped improvethings even temporarily for a little one in Tanzania.

Late last year we featured a story about Beerwah Nursing student Daisy Bradford who was about to embark on an amazing adventure, that included plenty of hard work and lots of eye opening experiences instead of kicking back and celebrating Christmas with her family.Daisy was away for 34 days in total, spending most of it in the township of Moshi, however she also spent four days in the Serengeti National Park and two days in Zanziba, a small island off Tanzania. Her adventure involved working in one of the major hospitals in Moshi, she also visited children’s day care centres, spent Christmas morning at Moshi's children’s orphanage and Christmas afternoon at a Juvenile jail.Daisy said a huge highlight of working in the hospital was decorating the children’s ward.“It really shocked and upset me that there were no pictures on the walls or toys for children to play with when in hospital, so unlike our hospitals here in Australia,” she said.“I went to a local supermarket to buy coloured plastic chairs and colouring books. We spent three days colouring pictures and laminating them to stick on the walls of the children’s ward.“They were so grateful it brought tears to my eyes as to how easily we could make a difference with such a small gesture,” she said.Daisy said the hospital she worked in was a big eye opener, and it made her appreciate the health care system we have in Australia and the amazing nurses and doctors that show so much compassion and empathy.

Daisy’s adventure

In Tanzania crying or screaming in pain is not accepted and pain relief is rarely an option even for children, she said.“I would love to go back, especially now that I have a better understanding of their circumstances.“I would like to wait to gain a few more years experience of my own, but my dream would be to go back and spend a few months teaching the students about basic care principles, hydration and nutrition,” she said.“On this trip I also spent a lot of time in maternity and witnessed several births that has increasingly made me want to continue study to become a midwife.“Coming back home is sad because there are so many people in Tanzania that still need our help, and I have made some really special friendships that I will treasure forever,” said Daisy.Daisy said that another highlight of her trip was definitely the safari over the new year period. She spent four days on the road, and saw monkeys, elephants, lions and a white rhino.“They waited for midnight in Australia which was actually 5.00pm in Tanzania so we could stop all the 4x4 trucks in order to pop champagne on the side of the road with zebras and wilder beast all around us,” she said. The local tour guides also cooked them a cake using hot ash from the man-made fire in order to celebrate their new years when it did get to midnight.Daisy wanted to say a really big thank you to everyone who supported her.“I had a lot of help in donations and great encouragement especially from everyone at Embracia in Glasshouse Country where I work and other local community groups,” said Daisy.“Not only did they help me, but they have helped me give back to the people who need it most in Tanzania.”

Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub-branch President Gavin Smith congratulations Bernard on his award

Honoured by OAM By Lea Parkes

Mooloolah local Bernard Verwayen’s knew late last year that he had been nominated for an Order of Australia Medal which he was pleased with. But he hadn’t expected to be chosen considering the amount of dedicated volunteers in the Sunshine Coast Community. When I spoke to Bernard about how he felt about the recognition, he was very humble. And just like so many other individuals that serve our community, he reminded me that while he leads the welfare service he is just one of a fantastic group of volunteers that give so generously of their time. However the past client that nominated Bernard clearly knew just how determined and passionate Bernard is about supporting ex-service personnel and what a difference he has made to the clients he has assisted over the years. The particular case Bernard was involved with this client ran over five years before finally being successful.Bernard’s wife Anita who understandably was really excited and proud of her husband’s award said the hardest part was knowing before the announcement and not being able to tell anyone, not even their children!Sub-branch President Gavin Smith said Bernard was the first of their sub-branch members to be recognised in this way – which was a significant achievement. “Already the publicity surrounding the award has helped raised awareness of the great job our Welfare team does both in our community and for those ex service people who travel here for assistance,” Gavin said.Bernard, a very sprightly looking 72-year-old, has been actively involved in assisting his fellow service men for over 30 years and the award is a reflection of this many years of service. His work has included positions of President, Vice President, Treasurer and committee members, however locally it is his welfare volunteer work that he is most well known for.

Having served in the Australian Navy from 1958 and surviving the collision between the HMAS Voyager and HMAS Melbourne off Jervis Bay in 1964, meant Bernard was personally involved in going through a compensation claim with the Federal Government. The first-hand knowledge that he had gained meant that others started to ask his advice and for assistance when filling out legal forms. He then realised that he could use these skills to take on a volunteer welfare role and help others. While Bernard is ex-Navy, he assists any ex-service officers or their spouses with their welfare requirements; he works three mornings a week at the Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub-Branch Drop In Centre as the Senior Pension Officer and leads the welfare team of five members.

Crossroads of confusion By Greg Brown

Last week, we reported on the tragic circumstances surrounding the fatal accident at the corner of Steve Irwin Way and Roys Road / Beerwah-Kilcoy Road.We asked the local State Member, Mr Mark McArdle MP whether he thought the situation had been handled satisfactorily to ensure the safety of road users. He acknowledged that the death of any person in a motor vehicle accident is always tragic.“In this case the circumstances are being investigated by the police. It would not be correct to state how this tragedy happened until experts provided their opinion.“I am exceptionally saddened by the passing of the driver yet it is important to let those trained and qualified do a full and proper assessment. At that point we can consider what needs to be done in the future,” concluded Mr McArdle. We asked Queensland Police what they would suggest motorists do if the situation happens again where the traffic lights aren’t operational.Senior Sergeant Shane Panoho from the Sunshine Coast Traffic Branch said that if the traffic lights are not operating, motorists should … “proceed with caution when approaching the intersection and apply the normal give way rules.”If you’re wondering what the ‘normal give way rules’ means for this intersection, you’re not alone.During the time the lights were out, many drivers appeared to find it disconcerting when approaching the intersection, as they had been used to looking for – and obeying – traffic light signals.Over the couple of days, motorists seemed to drive as if Steve Irwin Way was the ‘major’ road, with Roys Road and Beerwah-Kilcoy Roads being minor side approaches.

It seemed ‘natural’ that this was the case, and most motorists approaching from Roys Road or Beerwah-Kilcoy Road seemed to be stopping at the intersection to give way to the ‘through’ traffic. However, according to the Queensland road rules, if a set of traffic lights is not operational and there are no other instructional signs or markings, a driver must give way to all vehicles and pedestrians approaching on their right.Driving on Steve Irwin Way doesn’t automatically give you the right of way – even though it feels like it should. So according to the rule book, here’s what you need to do:• Driving south along Steve Irwin Way – give way to motorists on Beerwah-Kilcoy Road• Approaching from Roys Road – give way to motorists coming from the north along Steve Irwin Way• Driving north along Steve Irwin way – give way to motorists on Roys Road• Approaching from Beerwah-Kilcoy Road – give way to those heading north along Steve Irwin Way.A number of solutions were put to us by readers to make the intersection safer in the same circumstances:1. Police or Main Roads or SES or Council or trained contractors need to direct traffic.2. Main Roads should drop the speed limit down to 40km/hr for a stretch on each approach of the intersection.3. The traffic light controller box should be fitted with the ability to be powered by a generator.4. Temporary stop signs should be put up on Roys Road and Beerwah-Kilcoy Road sides and taken down when the lights work again.

5. Install a permanent ‘traffic stop-sign’ on the traffic light poles on Roys Road and Beerwah- Kilcoy Road sides, which tells people to stop if the lights aren’t working. Some good suggestions. We put them to the Department of Transport and Main Roads, asking what they thought of these suggestions, and whether, in light of the fatality, they would investigate their suitability for the intersection if asked to by the local community. We also asked them how concerned local residents can made their suggestions heard by the Department of Transport and Main Roads.Unfortunately, the response from Main Roads was not very enlightening.A Transport and Main Roads spokesperson replied that the recent severe weather resulted in wide-spread power outages across south-east Queensland. “Several traffic signals, including the Steve Irwin Way signals, were affected by the loss of power.“Motorists are reminded that if they approach an intersection where the signals are out, or they are faced with a flashing yellow light or arrow, ensuring motorists apply normal give way rules, they may drive through the intersection with caution.“Energex is responsible for managing and prioritising power outages and was aware of all the outages on its energy network,” concluded the spokesperson. It seems that, according to Main Roads, the solution is to do nothing and dismiss local concerns and ignore positive proactive suggestions that may help to stop the tragic loss of another life.Maybe it’s all too hard and would cost some money … after all, what’s a life worth?

Beerwah State High School is justifiably proud of the fantastic results achieved by the 2012 year 12 graduates. Seventy nine per cent of the cohort achieved an OP of 1-15 and all students were highly successful in obtaining their QCE and/or 1 or more vocational certificates. Special mention must be made of those nine students whose outstanding efforts saw them achieving an OP of 1-5OP1 students Manning Young and Andrew Pill will both be taking up studies at the University of Queensland with a Bachelor of Science Physics major and a Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering and Physics respectively. Andrew states that he believes much of his success comes from his involvement in the schools famed Astronomy club as this really sparked his interest and challenged him to investigate the many opportunities that could be undertaken in the aerospace industry.

Congratulations OP 1-5 studentsNarelle Hill and Alix Murdoch both received an OP2. Narelle has been accepted into a Bachelor of Journalism/Arts at UQ and Alix will commence a dual degree, Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Engineering with an Aerospace major.

OP 3 student Curtis Sutton has already moved to Brisbane and is looking forward to the challenges of studying a dual degree in Business Management and Science whereas Reagan White will continue to commute while he undertakes a Bachelor of Engineering with the hopes of eventually securing a career in the robotics/electrical field. Lucas Whittaker was successful in obtaining a scholarship to study a Bachelor of Business/Arts at University of the Sunshine Coast.

Rae Austin and James Day received an OP 4 and OP 5 respectively. Rae was successful in obtaining a scholarship and she intends to put this to good use as she works through her Bachelor of International Studies at UQ. Moving to Brisbane has also been quite an adventure. James has been accepted into a Bachelor of Business at QUT focussing on management, accounting and finance.

The hard work and commitment has finally paid off. All are looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead and all feel that they have been adequately prepared to meet these challenges thanks to the many opportunities provided to them at Beerwah State High School.

Beerwah State High school staff and students wish them all every success for their future endeavours.

The Jammin Sons will perform on the day

Beerwah Floodraiser 2013Beerwah local Alicia McNamara spent the Australia Day long weekend glued to the television coverage of the destruction and flood damage that ex cyclone Oswald was causing her fellow Queenslanders. This got her thinking about what she could do to help those hit hardest - the flood victims and their pets.So ‘Floodraiser 2013’ was born.Alicia, a Beerwah Hotel regular, chatted to Pub Manager Steve Holmes and he agreed that they would host a fundraising event that Alicia wanted to organise on Saturday afternoon, February 16 to raise funds for the Red Cross QLD Flood Appeal and for the RSPCA.Alicia has called on the talents, skills and contacts of her family and friends to assist her in making it a great afternoon. Some former Beerwah High mates Gavin Jamieson and Chris Goodrich who are rock acoustic band ‘The Jammin Sons’ have agreed to play on the day.Alicia said there will also be raffles and a cent auction with great prizes from tattoo vouchers to fruit trays, meat trays, IT equipment, pharmacy packs, Woolworths vouchers and heaps more!“The pub has generously agreed to provide the food for the sausage sizzle – I just have to find someone to man the barbeque,” she said.As it is a family friendly day they also have a face painter coming along for the kids.

The afternoon will kick off at about 1.00pm with the sausage sizzle and the live music from about 2.00pm. If you would like to assist Alicia she can be contact by email [email protected] or you can check out the facebook event page FLOODRAISER 2013.

Community NewsBob’s Mo to Go?In November GCNews was encouraging locals to pay fellas to grow their facial hair for Movember. Now a couple of months later in February we are asking you to put your hand in your pocket and make a donation so Bob Malcolm will shave his moustache off.Well known Glass House Mountains local Bob Malcolm hasn’t shaved his mo since 1971, and that was so long ago he can’t even remember why he shaved it off.But finally after 43 years he has decided that to give Jayme Lee some extra incentive to reach her $5,000 fundraising target for the Leukemia Foundation, he will be happy for his face to be ‘clean shaven’ on the condition that she reaches her goal.So with less than 40 days to go until ‘Shave Day’ on March 23 (outside the Glasshouse Newsagency) you still have plenty of time to get your donations in.Jayme Lee and her support team (nanna Judy and mum Paula) have arranged to have 12 fabulous prizes generously donated by local businesses for the multi-draw raffle. Raffle tickets are $1.00 and are available from Glasshouse Newsagency, where are you can also get lucky dips for $2.00 as a fundraiser.Prizes include: 1st bar fridge, 2nd $50.00 scratchies, 3rd $50.00 Easter Hamper, 4th $50.00 Di’s Create a Cake, 5th $50.00 pizza and pasta voucher from 7 Secrets, 6th $40.00 Follow Me Hair Fashions, 7th $30.00 Glasshouse Country Meats, 8th $30.00 Matilda Fruit Barn Voucher, 9th Glasshouse News – Brief Case, 10th Carton XXXX Beer, 11th Jewellery by Jodie and 12th two bottles of wine and chocolates from Glasshouse Tavern. And if you would like to see Bob Malcolm’s upper lip then you will want to get your donation into one of the tins at Glasshouse Newsagency, Glasshouse Country Meats, Follow Me Hair, Matilda Fruit Barn, Glasshouse Tavern, 7 Secrets Glasshouse, Glasshouse Country Kitchen, Glasshouse IGA, Betta Electrical or Beerwah Bakery.

Glasshouse Gourmet Snail Farm and the Guilt TripThe Glasshouse Country View ClubOur members this month have been social butterflies having two outings in a week. The first was on Tuesday, January 28 with a very interesting visit to the Glasshouse Gourmet Snail Farm with several members of our club as guests of the owners Cliff and Mary Page. ‘The Great South East’ crew were filming a segment for their program to be aired on April 14.Cliff and Mary provided us with morning tea and we all enjoyed a pleasant couple of hours learning about the breeding of these quite small creatures. We were very impressed with the very intensive work required to breed the snails for supplying to restaurants in many parts of Queensland including Hamilton Island. On February 5 we headed to the movies at Morayfield to see the Guilt Trip. About 17 members had coffee before the movie. It was a light hearted movie which I think most of us could relate to. Our March outing is to the Landsborough Museum which has to be paid at our luncheon meeting on February 20.View Clubs support the Smith Family in many ways by helping disadvantaged Australian children with their education. If you wish to join our club please contact Margaret on 5435 2172.

New wheels for retirement villageBy Lea ParkesThe Beerwah Peachester RSL Sub-branch recently presented a mobility wheelchair to the Embracia Retirement Village.Village Manager Chris Minetti said it will be very handy for them when they go on bus trips; it is perfect for residents who are able to walk but may not have the capacity to walk for extended periods of time.We regularly do day trips and particularly if we are going somewhere like Under Water World the amount of walking involved could stop residents attending, she said.As Embracia in Glasshouse Country has its own vehicle for outings, it is set up with an access ramp, which means the mobility wheelchair can be driven into and off the vehicle instead of the residents using it having to climb the stairs.RSL Sub-Branch President Gavin Smith who presented the wheelchair said that they were pleased to be able to provide this assistance in our local community.

A number of the sub-branch members attended the handover ceremony and were treated to a tour of the facility.

Landsborough Child Careand Early Education Centre

Is your child is eligible for Prep in 2014? If so they can attend a Kindergarten

program now. Give your child a head start on their education.• Qualified Early Childhood teacher• Minimum of 15 hours a week.• Reduced fees apply for Health Care Card holders!

Government Approved Queensland Kindergarten Curriculum

We have limited vacancies so call today!

Too pooped to prep!First day of Prep is very exciting with lots of new experiences and new friends. However, it was just a little too much for little Robert Parkes who fell asleep just 20 minutes before the end of the day. There were 67 new Preppies across three class rooms and every one of them had fantastic first day.Although there were a couple of wobbly moments for some when mum or dad left school that morning, it didn’t take long for children start having fun and making new friends. Most of the children couldn’t wait for first break to dig in the giant sandpit, climb on the playground equipment or experiment with new toys they hadn’t come across before. However, the excitement ran even higher when the children were introduced to the Kitchen Garden. In coming weeks they’ll spend time learning the patch to plate experience for themselves as they grow, weed, mulch, harvest and cook their own food. For now, it was enough to tour the garden and then bite into a juicy piece of watermelon. The first official day of Prep at GCCC kicked off a couple of days later this year to allow for valuable one on one time between teacher and student in the previous week.

Another highlight was the ‘Welcome to Prep Barbecue’ on Thursday night. Woolworths Beerwah kindly donated two huge slab cakes and the children couldn’t wait for their slice.

Preps shine in their new buildingContributed by Jennifer HortonThe children in the new Beerwah State School prep classroom are feeling extremely fortunate. The building, constructed late last year, boasts a full kitchen, store room and office, giving the prep class a wonderful environment in which to learn. It allows the children plenty of space to

engage in hands-on learning, both inside and outdoors.

Mooloolah after school careContributed by Belinda MewesWe have great things happening this term. On Wednesday afternoons we are holding yoga classes for children through ‘Active after School’. It gives the children the opportunity to learn stretching, breathing and relaxation techniques, while having fun.On Friday afternoons, we have our ever popular swimming at Mooloolah Pool. These extra activities that the children can avail of are of no extra cost to parents. Once you are enrolled with us, all you will pay is for the afternoon at the centre. Most parents will receive CCB and/or CCR benefits off the cost. It is possible that the afternoon can be as little as $3.00 or $4.00 depending on what percentage your family is eligible for. We have lots of children who come from other schools and still use the centre as ‘Afternoon Care’, you don’t need to go to Mooloolah State School to utilise the quality service we provide. Afternoon tea is also included in the cost which varies from term to term. Some of our children arrive on the bus to come and join in our special activities. Please don’t hesitate to call Belinda for more information on 5494 7491.

IT Newswith Gus

How does internet work? After recent devastation by ex-Cyclone Oswald, issues regarding clients’ understanding of internet came to light. Relative to this, we thought we’d outline the basics of how internet service works.First, ADSL Broadband. ADSL (Asymetric Digital Subscriber Line) Broadband is provided through the phone jack, so when the phone lines came back up, we all expected internet to be there too. Unfortunately this wasn’t the case. For most Mooloolah residents, ADSL service didn’t return until Thursday afternoon. ADSL comes through our phone line on a different frequency than that used for speech/phone conversations. It’s like having two pipes in one: little filters/splitters send the different frequencies to the correct location i.e. speech to the phone/fax and ADSL to our modems. So when our phones came alive, one of the two ‘pipes’ was still blocked – ADSL. There was obviously trouble with the mobile phone towers which provide our 3 and 4G internet. A solution for some was to drive out to the coast where they could pick up a 3 or 4G signal with smart phone (a mobile that connects to internet) or a laptop and mobile device. Did you know? If you own a smart phone and have a data (download) allowance, in most circumstances you can ‘enable’ the phone to be your wireless hot spot for a laptop or tablet (e.g. iPad or android). Called ‘tethering’, this is normally a simple procedure and is a real advantage for people on the move, or when power goes off and your modem is unable to work. Final word. In light of the above, let’s consider mobile devices, internet and fees you pay. If you already have a smart phone, there is usually no point in paying extra money for built-in 3 or 4G in a tablet or for a contract for tablet data download – you may be doubling your expenses unnecessarily. You can simply use/tether your smart phone for internet connection.

The past four months have been busy for the chamber’s Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme review team. A submission was lodged on December 14 with supplementary evidence and delivery of a presentation to full council last Friday. The extended time was provided to peak industry groups of which the GCCoC was one. The GCCoC alliance with CCIQ Sunshine Coast, partnered with Urban Land Development Institute (UDIA) and CCIQ presenting joint industry submissions. The UDIA with 10 industry partners submission took 2000 hours of professional voluntary time valued at $500,00.00 to prepare, the recommended changes being delivered in three volumes of evidence.• Glasshouse Country is unique in the way the scheme has treated the communities from Beerburrum to Landsborough, with Mooloolah being well served by the scheme. Each community has different needs, the team identified several common ones, solutions recommended with partnerships required to deliver the best community outcomes.• The communities have not been allocated minimal development land to replace that which has been built on from the current scheme, nothing to attract young families to enjoy the rural community lifestyle and maintaining strong communities. This will have a direct impact on the primary schools. The schools will have no feed in of students to replace the loss of the Year 7 students (school communities will struggle to survive).• The lack of opportunities for new business to be established, creating local jobs (limited suitably zoned land).• No future planned for Glasshouse Country; GCCoC requested a 10 year plan so communities can plan.• The chamber will continue working with council to ensure the best outcome for Glasshouse Country.

BeeGees Football Club A word from our sponsors

Stepping Out Podiatry is thrilled to be sponsoring the Bee Gee’s U/10 Soccer Team for 2013Exercise gives children the physical benefits of strength and co-ordination along with the emotional benefits of improved self confidence and respect for others. Playing a team sport, such as soccer with the ‘Bee Gees’ is a fantastic way to interact with like-minded children giving them a social aspect to their activity along with the benefits of working within a team. However, when your children are participating in sport, it is even more important that any ‘niggles’ that may occur are seen to as soon as possible. If your child complains of a sore ankle or knee, now is the time to bring your child in to see a Podiatrist, as many foot conditions are best treated at an early age.Re-occurring injuries may be related to the way in which your child walks or runs, so the sooner they are treated, the better chance of these issues not continuing into adulthood.Stepping Out Podiatry is focused on educating the Bee Gee’s players of ways to keep them injury free so they have less time out of their favourite game. The Podiatrists will be attending some of the soccer matches this year to oversee the players and advise on correct footwear, muscle

strengthening and stretching. For the month of February, Stepping Out Podiatry is holding a free foot screening for children six – 18 years – to get your child off on the right foot for their Sporting season! Please phone 1300 881 082 for more information.

On February 14, 1966 decimal currency was introduced in Australia, exactly 47 years ago this week. The new currency replaced pounds, shillings and pence with dollars and cents. There’s a historic tea towel at Bankfoot House which commemorates the old one dollar note, although the irreverent illustrations on the tea towel would not be to the Government’s liking: the Queen’s head has been replaced by that of Ned Kelly. ‘Dollar Bill’ is pictured to the left of the Coat of Arms. Dollar Bill is a familiar memory to those people who were around in 1966. What’s more, those who had finished their education by 1966 did all their schooling based on pounds, shillings and pence. Many readers will remember this old currency. Some of us can still add and subtract in pounds, shillings and pence, but long division would be another matter. All the old documents in the Bankfoot House collection, relating to money matters, are in the old currency, which tests the brains of volunteers at times. In the 1966 currency conversion the ten shilling note became the one dollar note. The one dollar note was itself consigned to history in 1984 and replaced by a gold coloured coin. Many methods were used to educate Australians in the lead-up to the introduction of decimal currency, and Dollar Bill played his part. Information booklets and conversion calculators were widely distributed.Ron Gillinder was working for the Federal Government at the time and remembers having to complete a written test each work day morning before starting normal work. He also remembers his mother constantly asking the question, ‘how much is that in real money?’There’s an interesting reminder from Bill Ferris as to why the kangaroo and the emu were selected for the Australian Coat of Arms – both animals are unable to take a backward step.

Roys Road/Steve Irwin Way intersectionI endorse the comments by Greg Brown’s 'frustrated resident' on page 7 in the February 6 edition of GCNews. I believe it was grossly negligent of the police not to man this major and dangerous intersection during the storm. During the space of an hour I saw the aftermath of two accidents at this site, and the second was the serious one in your article. I am saddened to see someone died and someone else was seriously injured. When it was proposed to build the rail overpass I put in a submission suggesting a roundabout rather than lights at the Steve Irwin intersection. Roundabouts are more expensive initially, but much safer. The idea was dismissed by the then councillor. I suggest the proposal would be a good solution. If the lights remain, I suggest some signage warning of lights ahead on Steve Irwin Way, though I suspect this would not have helped during the storm, when police should have manned the site, even if the lights were operating.

Profiting from miseryJust returning from the truck rollover at Beerburrum, we are so very saddened that the many chickens that were caught and escaped the severity of the crash are still being sent to be murdered. We spoke to the Ingham rep at the scene and he was adamant that although we had approximately 50 people willing to take the chickens and re-home them, the company wouldn’t consider giving them to us.The scene was as horrific as any abattoir killing room floor with bits of beautiful, spirited little souls all over the road.We wanted to at least help those that had survived; this was rejected without even consideration. Our supporters from Brisbane were waiting on our call to action to travel up here to collect any chickens. Thanks once again for proving that anyone who profits from misery has no soul themselves.

Have to wonderLandsborough Area Community Association (LACA) members are concerned about the proliferation of dumped rubbish in parks, isolated streets, and particularly in forest areas around Landsborough. This has increased greatly since the cancellation of free kerbside rubbish collection and the steep

charges levied for household waste at transfer sites and dumps. We have to wonder why these high charges are there when many other local council areas in Queensland have free household dump sites?

Farewell to a fantastic Learn to Swim InstructorOn behalf of our family which includes three young children I would like to acknowledge the wonderful Learn To Swim Instructor Ashleigh Topfer who sadly left Beerwah and District Swimming Pool at the end of Term 4, 2012.Ashleigh had been at the pool as a Learn to Swim Instructor for five years and in that time has done so much for the local community's kids with teaching them valuable skills to learn to swim. Her enthusiastic commitment and wonderful persona will be greatly missed. My two-year-old son would refer to the Beerwah Pool as 'Ashleigh's Pool'.A farewell party at the pool was attended by just a handful of people who have benefited from Ashleigh's time and friendship. We wish Ashleigh all the best for the future, and I am sure I am not alone in acknowledging such a wonderful and inspiration woman! Thanks Ash!

Wonderful caring communityOn behalf of my sisters Kay, Jan and myself I would like to sincerely thank the Committee and members of the Beerwah Golf for their kindness and consideration with regards to my dad's bottle tree (the Willett tree) which he planted beside the 9th green when the Golf club was first established. The Golf club was a major part of both Eric and Una's lives and we are so pleased that the tree which blew over in the adverse weather conditions is to be replaced by another bottle tree. Once again thank you very much - we live in such a wonderful caring community.

Body Health ProgramLesa from Beerwah Bowen Therapy is offering a new body health program. It is suitable for anyone interested in taking charge of their health."For the past 10 months I have been trialling different ways of determining what the best diet for my body is. (By ‘diet’ I mean the food you eat every day.) Some of these have been very difficult, others simply did not work and others were too restrictive. The results have been remarkable, I am now 20 kilograms lighter and many symptoms I have experienced for years have decreased.A number of people agreed to test the program for me and all have experienced positive health benefits. These include weight loss, a reduction in blood pressure and increased energy.

Is Your Baby Suffering From Colic? Is your little one constantly crying in pain? Is he/she having trouble feeding, or keeping it down? Is he/she arching his/her back in attempt to find relief? Do you wish you knew what was wrong? Or that there was something more you could do? Is the crying beginning to stress you out as a parent? Is it affecting your bonding with your child?

Babies are supposed to eat a lot, sleep a lot, and poop a lot...and cry a little. If your baby is crying more than he/she should, seems unsettled, isn’t sleeping, or is spitting up often...something isn’t right. Studies suggest infantile colic now occurs in 25-40 percent of babies. The medical literature says infantile colic is difficult to diagnose and that if it is colic, most children will ‘outgrow it’ by 12 weeks of age. The common treatment for infantile colic includes drugs like dimethicone, advice to change formula, or to ‘wait it out’ as the baby will eventually ‘outgrow it’. Most of these treatments, however, haven’t offered parents and babies the relief hoped for. There is a better option! Several weeks of sleepless nights and living with a baby in pain can seem like forever. Chiropractors have known that specific spinal adjustments can get to the cause of what is ailing your child. There are numerous case studies where infants with colic have been relieved of their painful symptoms with chiropractic care.In one study, 316 infants with moderate to severe colic were adjusted. 94 per cent of the children within 14 days of chiropractic care (usually three visits) showed a satisfactory response. After four weeks, the improvements were maintained. One fourth of these infants showed great improvement after the very first chiropractic adjustment. The remaining infants all showed improvement within 14 days. Note: 51 per cent of the infants had undergone prior unsuccessful treatment, usually drug therapy.Dr Braxton is a member of International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, has extensive training in evaluating and adjusting children, and is Webster Technique certified for adjusting pregnant mums. Call Adjust to Life Chiropractic today to find out if he can help your family finally find the solution.

Out and AboutAustralia Day at Beerwah Magic Trees

Happenings

Australia Day means different things to each one of us… and at Beerwah Magic Trees Early Learning Centre it is a time for appreciating our friends from all walks of life! The day started out by offering the children a range of fantastic Aussie activities such as decorating the Australian flag, making Aboriginal

flags, collage with natural materials and listening to Aboriginal stories and singing Australian songs. Everyone got into the spirit of the day and came dressed up in their interpretation of what being Australian means to their family. There were an array of colours from red, black and yellow; blue, white and red and the good old green and gold!

Sarah and Grace go the green and gold

Abby and Kym get totally Aussie

Grace enjoying her Aussie sausage sizzle

Arya flies the flag

And although our day ended up a wet and wild afternoon, the children still enjoyed a very Aussie sausage on bread with their teachers and friends! If you’re looking for a centre that will guide and inspire your child to think outside of the box please feel free to give Dee a call on 5494 0777.

SATURDAY

Fishy day of funJot down Saturday, February 23 in your diary as a great day out for the family at Ewen Maddock Dam.The Ewen Maddock Fish Stockers Challenge fishing competition and family fun day will have plenty of angling action, both on the water and on the shore. It’s the first event of its kind run by the Ewen Maddock Fish Management group, and it’s looking like being a fantastic day out for all locals.Keen competition fishers still have until first thing Monday, February 18 to register by emailing David Brace on [email protected]. Only 50 spots are open in the competition – so it’s a ‘first come – first fish’ basis. But for family, friends and other interested onlookers, there’s as much going on onshore as there is on the water. From around 9.00am, there will be displays and exhibitions from a range of businesses, organisations and sponsors.Experts from Fisheries Queensland will be there with displays and giving talks and demonstrations, as well as activities for kids and adults alike – such as a casting competition, along with raffles, barbeque and drinks for sale. The fishing competition starts from 6.30am with the ‘photo-in’ (that’s the weigh-in when you have a catch-and-release competition) at about 12.00noon.And best of all, it’s all free – except for the fishing competition which has a entry fee of $50.00 – and has some excellent prizes on offer. All proceeds go back to the Ewen Maddock Fish Management group so that they can continue to stock the dam with fingerlings, providing a great resource for recreational fresh water fishing right on our doorstep. So Saturday, February 23, the place to be is the foreshore and picnic ground of Ewen Maddock Dam, over on the Glenview side, just off the Mooloolah Connection Road where the BMX track is located.

The RainsIt has been a difficult period for many in Division 1, especially for the people left without power, with black outs extending into six days in some parts of Beerwah, Peachester and Crohamhurst. Thank you to everyone who jumped in and helped in whatever way they could - your community spirit and efforts are appreciated by us all. I would especially like to thank the grounds people and volunteers at the Landsborough Sports Ground for helping us supply those in need with access to clean drinking water, toilet facilities and hot showers during the latter part of the power outages.During the aftermath of the wild weather, I was contacted by residents who requested an extension to the free green waste period for hinterland communities. I was grateful that my call for this was taken up by council, and many people have been able to utilise the additional free access at the Beerwah and Witta waste facilities. This was an appropriate recognition that larger properties in the hinterland have more debris to contend with after major storms.I’ve since met with Minister for Energy and Water Supply Mark McArdle and the Mayor about improved preparation in the event of future storms. It’s good to know that both local and state government are working together to help our communities be storm prepared.

Out in the communityI’m commencing my ‘out in the community’ meetings to catch up with locals about what’s happening in our council and the region. I’ll be at the Beerwah library on Friday, February 22 between 1.00pm and 3.00pm. If you’d like to make a meeting time call Kerri on 5420 8987, or just drop in and I'll fit you in. I’ll be in a different town every month and will keep you posted as to when and where, so if you have anything you’d like to talk with me about, you’ll know where to find me.

Rick BaberowskiDivision 1 Councillor Sunshine Coast CouncilP: 5420 8987

Mooloolah Country Clubhouse is still for sale and it is hoped that a sporting group or anyone involved in the sporting industry will invest in the Clubhouse soon. I’ve been in meetings with the receivers and user groups and we’re trying to find a solution so that the community facility is managed and maintained into the future. The new picnic shelter for Martin Rungert Park at Mooloolah is currently being pre-fabricated off site and should be ready for installation in the park in about eight weeks. The new shelter, picnic table and seating will be a welcome addition to the park when they arrive.Fine tuning of the Draft Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme continues as a series of special meetings gets underway to review the 2,500 plus submissions received during the public display period. It’s really encouraging to have received so many submissions as it demonstrates how passionate our community is when it comes to the future of our region. Each submitter can expect to receive a letter advising how council has dealt with their submission.Council’s Water and Sewerage Funding Program is a one year program to assist not-for-profit community groups and sporting clubs pay a proportion of the costs associated with water and sewerage access charges. Check council’s website for all the details.Broad Leaf Paspalum is spreading into many farming properties and taking over productive grazing land. It’s a weed to stay on top of and both local government and property owners need to actively manage the spread of this invasive species.Hope to see you at the breakfast meeting at Thunderbird Café in Mooloolah starting at 7.00am on Thursday, February 28. I’ve invited Mark McArdle MP to be our special guest for the meeting to discuss local and state issues including progress on the Mooloolah Pool.

That’s because their expert knowledge of the home lending market means they are perfectly placed to advise you on your home loan refinancing options.

One of the great things about being a homeowner is that you get to tailor your house to your own needs and desires.Unlike in a renting situation - where simply hanging a picture on a wall might be looked on as a capital offence - buying means you really are the master of your domain. With no landlord threatening to appear for an inspection at short notice, all those plans that blossom in your mind about how to improve your home can be brought to fruition. Many buyers will often purchase

houses based in large part on what they plan to do with them. Instead of seeing all the things a prospective home is lacking, they choose to see where there is potential for improvement. It’s a great attitude to have, especially when your first home loan borrowing capacity means you end up looking at more fixer-uppers than mansions.Once you’ve moved into your new house, there will naturally be a time of adjustment - both to a new living situation and to life with a mortgage.Eventually though, the time may

come when you want to put those renovation plans into action.Getting really stuck into a project can be great fun and many homeowners might find skills and hobbies they never thought they possessed. For bigger projects, the question of how to fund them will undoubtedly arise. What can be helpful to remember is that, just as they can help you secure a first home buyer loan, mortgage advisers can help you finance home improvements.

Native Slender Mint Mentha diemenica This aromatic plant provides a wonderful native variation of mint that can be used both in landscaping and in the culinary field. Native Slender Mint occurs in grassland and forest habitats from South Australia, throughout Victoria and Tasmania, and north to South East Queensland. It has dull-green, opposite leaves and flowers form late spring to early summer – this year the plants are still flowering at the nursery as this goes to print. They are usually white in colour, forming in clusters, about 4mm in size. Variations in colour can occur when you find a pink or mauve flower.Growing to less than 30cm, it is a strongly suckering plant, which can form into a dense ground cover when growing vigorously. It can become dormant or die back over the cooler, dry winter months. It grows well in a slightly damp site in both full sun or heavy shade making it an absolute gorgeous plant for borders, edges and fill ins within your existing garden beds. Best of all it can be used between driveways or stepping stones where its fragrant aroma is noticed when trodden on or brushed against.Culinary speaking, this native mint may be used as a flavouring and garnish for cool summer refreshing drinks in a similar manner to the common normal mint. This plant is a fabulous addition to any garden, whether exotic or native. Come into the nursery and have a look at what is available while you are checking out the Native Slender Mint.See you soon and look forward to assisting you with all your native endemic plant requirements.

Rental properties still in demandDemand for rental properties remained strong across Queensland during the last three months of 2012, according to the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ). REIQ CEO Anton Kardash said Queensland’s rental market had been a story of more demand than supply throughout 2012.“As the year progressed, it became apparent that the continued robust demand for rental properties was not going to ease anytime soon,” he said.“While sales in the property market did begin to improve in the second half of last year, the removal of the First Home Owners Grant in mid-October resulted in a large number of would-be home buyers remaining in the rental market at the tail-end of last year.”According to the latest Australia Bureau of Statistics (ABS) housing finance figures, the numbers of Queensland first home buyers slumped 33 per cent between October and November last year.

Do you have an hour or two a month to spare? Would you like to learn more about the flora and fauna in your area, and meet new friends? For more information on GMAN activities and nursery sales please call Cliff (5438 7118) or Gwen (5493 0029).

Time for a tree changeWell now the rains have finally come the timing is perfect to look at your garden. Did the howling storm bring damage to your garden? Maybe now is the time to consider replacing any damaged plants with local natives? GMAN may be able to help you. Due to circumstances out of GMAN’s control we are moving our nursery, and would like to offer a special to GCNews readers – buy two plants and get one free (general public only). The stock is growing through the roof, so you need to be quick to benefit this offer. We have lillypillys, rain forest trees, grasses and a lot of eucalyptus to name a few. The range of tube stocks have been grown specifically to suit our area, and help to encourage the local birdlife and wildlife into your garden. You also get the expert advice of Gwen Malcolm, who has overseen the nursery for many years, along with her band of dedicated helpers. Gwen says now the ground has had a good soaking it’s the ideal time to plant. With orders of 30 plants or more, now is the chance to revegetate your property for a low cost. Please call Gwen on 5493 0029 today to find out more information, as we need to move our nursery in the next few weeks. Alternatively if you would like to help us with the move (do

you have a four wheel drive, ute or trailer, and a few spare hours?) and are physically able to help us relocate our nursery plants and stands, we would love to hear from you.

Being Christian isn’t easyThe writer of the Gospel of Mark tells the story of Jesus being rejected by the people of his hometown Synagogue in Nazareth (Mark 6:1-6). It seemed that familiarity bred contempt and it was hardest of all for Jesus to live out his faith amongst those most familiar to him.I’m sure some of you have experienced this also, perhaps when we’ve gone away to university or to take a job away from home. We find ourselves in a new place with new people who don't know what we’re like back home.Suddenly, we have the freedom to change and be different. The quiet wallflower becomes a stand-up comedian or the wisecracking goof-off makes the dean's list. The kid who couldn't remember to take out the trash even when you reminded him every day becomes a leader in his field. Then we come back home. We walk in the door changed and new and happy with who we’re becoming and ‘Wham!’ we’re hit in the face with the presence of all these people who’ve known us all our lives and who treat us just the same way they have since we were a kid. Old habits begin to rise up in us and we find it difficult or even impossible to hold on to the changes we’ve experienced within ourselves. We can be who we need to be anywhere but home!

We shouldn’t take such behaviour as a sign of not being loved or cared for by our families or friends. We’ve upset the equilibrium and they’re reacting to it at a very deep emotional level without taking the time to reflect on what they’re doing. When this happened to Jesus, he didn't run away from home but rather stuck to his itinerary and went on about his ministry. He didn’t desert his family and friends though they certainly didn’t understand or approve of what he was doing. He knew who he was and he knew what he had to do and he went about doing it.So what do we do? We can trust God. We can place our faith in the one who loves us even when we or those we love are making mistakes. We can place our loved ones with confidence in the hands of the one who’ll never leave them or forsake them, and we can remember that with all good intentions Jesus' mother and family thought that he was mad. They were wrong and they learned that eventually. It just could be that the great mistake we see our loved one making is exactly what God is calling them to do.

World Day of PrayerThe World Day of Prayer is a worldwide movement of Christian women of all traditions who come together to observe a common day of prayer each year and who in many countries have a continuing relationship of prayer and service. INDOOR CRICKET Indoor Netball

Beerwah Ladies GolfContributed by Jenny KellyThe course has held up well over the last couple of weeks of wet and wild weather. Even though the extra run has all but gone, the fairways are turning green and the course is looking a picture again. Our fields are increasing as the milder weather comes around and we had 66 girls come out to play a 2 Ball Ambrose for trophies kindly donated by Carol Fraser and Helen Faithful. Just to prove that it isn't what you know but who, I was lucky enough to team up with Monica Dangerfield and we came in with a score of 65.75 Nett, to just pip Cathy Stone and Andrea Campbell who scored 66.75 Nett. The NTPs went to Andrea and Cathy on 2, Pat Chapman and Sue Greentree on 5, Monica and Jen on 16, and Pam Marsden and Keithea Thompson on the 18th.The Weekend Pennant team played against the Nambour girls at Pacific Harbour on Sunday and tied the day with two wins, two losses and a square. Let’s hope we go one better next week when we play Gympie at Caloundra. Now that the dams are full and the greens recently cored, we can look forward to playing a course in tip top condition. Hope we see you out there. Until then, stay safe and good golfing.

How to tell a woman’s ageA woman decides to have a face lift for her 50th. On her way home, she stops to buy a newspaper and asks the clerk, "how old do you think I am?" "About 32." "Nope! I'm exactly 50," she said happily. Later she goes into McDonald's and asks the counter girl the same question. The girl replies, "I guess about 29." The woman replies, "Nope, I'm 50." Now she's feeling really good. While waiting for the bus to go home, she asks an old man the same question. He replies, "Lady, I'm 78 and my eye sight is going. Although, when I was young, there was a sure way to tell how old a woman was. It sounds very forward, but it requires you to let me put my hands under your

bra. Then, and only then can I tell you Exactly how old you are."They wait in silence until curiosity gets the best of her. "What the heck, go ahead." He slips both of his hands under her bra and begins to feel around very slowly and carefully. He bounces and weighs each one of her assets. After a couple of minutes of this, she says, "Okay, okay...How old am I?" He completes one last squeeze, removes his hands and says, "madam, you are 50."Stunned and amazed, the woman says, "that was incredible, how could you tell?" "I was behind you in line at McDonald's."Submitted by Hugh Jones, Beerwah
